chapter 6:mistakes

azel pov Azel didn’t talk on the ride home. Didn’t yell at Rina. Didn’t cry. Didn’t slam any doors. She just stared out the window, face unreadable, fingers fidgeting in her lap. When they got home, she didn’t say anything. Just went straight to her room, sat on her bed, and stared at the wall like it might give her answers. --- The next morning, she was back in her uniform. Buttoned to the top. Hair in place. Notebook in hand. On the outside, she looked fine. Inside? Her brain wouldn’t shut up. Why did she say that to him? Why did he look at her like that? Why didn’t she walk away when she could’ve? The memory of Blaze’s eyes—not mocking, not amused, but watching—stuck to her skin like heat. She hated that. She hated him. She hated herself a little more for not hating the feeling. --- At school, everything was normal. Too normal. Until it wasn’t. She turned a corner and there he was. Leaning against a locker like he had nowhere to be. Arms crossed. That same lazy smirk. “Morning, princess.” Her pulse jumped. She didn’t answer. He didn’t expect her to. He just watched her pass, slow and deliberate, like she was something worth watching. And she hated that her skin burned under her blazer. --- “Okay,” Rina said the second they sat down for lunch. “Spill.” “There’s nothing to spill.” “Girl, please. You were flirting with Blaze last night.” “I was not flirting.” “You whispered in his ear.” “I was drunk.” “You had one drink.” “I was lightweight drunk.” Rina smirked. “You like him.” “I don’t.” “You think about him.” “I don’t—” “Azel.” Azel dropped her fork. Rina backed off—a little. “Fine,” she muttered. “Be boring.” --- She needed air. After lunch, she walked the long route behind the school. That’s when she heard it—a voice from behind her. “Careful, princess. People might think you’re avoiding me.” She turned. There he was. Again. Same confidence. Same smirk. But his eyes… they were different. She folded her arms. “I have nothing to say to you.” “Doesn’t stop you from looking.” “I’m not—” “You are.” Her lips pressed into a line. “What do you want from me?” Blaze stepped closer—not touching, just close enough that the world around them felt too quiet. “I don’t want anything,” he said smoothly. “Just… curious.” “Curious?” she echoed, voice tight. “About how someone so perfect got under my skin.” She blinked. The air shifted. His voice dropped—quieter now, almost serious. “Azel.” The way he said it—soft, deep, with none of his usual teasing—sent a jolt down her spine. But he didn’t turn and leave. He stepped closer. Slow. Deliberate. Until there was barely a breath between them. His gaze dropped to her lips, then back to her eyes. His hand lifted halfway, then stopped—not touching, just hovering, like he was fighting the urge. “Don’t let me ruin you,” he said quietly. Just like that. No smile. No smirk. Just truth. She didn’t breathe. Didn’t blink. Didn’t move—not even when he leaned close enough for his breath to graze her cheek. Then he tilted his head slightly and whispered: “See you around… princess.” And just like that, he walked away. Leaving her trembling, furious, and completely undone.
