A/N - I'll try to upload a chapter everyday or every few days, and most of my chapter will be rather long, sorry that is one was rather short, trying to get back into fanfiction and writing. Third Person POV There are many heroes amongst us, some more heroic than others. Even small acts of kindness can go a long way. But in our world there are only a select few that we call truly a hero, whether it be what they stand for, or what they did, or are doing right now. Their actions spoke for them instead. But the question always arises: Are you a hero if you have killed a man? Taken a man's life and left his wife widowed and his child fatherless? These are normally actions that would deem you unfit to be called a hero. But however, in some cases to protect your loved ones and what you believe in you must go beyond what a normal hero does and do whatever is necessary. A hero doesn't need spotlight, nor does he need the glory. A true hero is one that hides in the shadows and tries to help without being noticed, and that is exactly what Perseus is. It had been years since the war ended, the doom of immortality was still with him, many of his friends had died, even his own master. He was yet again reminded of how cruel the fates were and how much he envied the mortals. The empty feeling inside him was still there, he felt as though he had no purpose left in this world. He chuckled, it was a short and dry laugh, but he sometimes missed war years. It was always something exciting everyday and he was never bored and he was never alone. Alone. He had been alone for the past couple decades, traveling the world and honing his skills was all he could do. The end of the war was when he last communicated with the Gods, and he wanted to keep it like that, they had taken everything from him, even his beloved. His heart still ached whenever he thought about her, and he always ran through the what if's in his mind and often daydreamed about what would've happened between them if there wasn't a war. He shook his head, he shouldn't be thinking about that, she's probably married to another guy and has started a family. That thought made him jealous, he couldn't bear to think of his beloved with another man, being a mother to children that were not his, even the thought of her laughing together with a random man made his blood boil but he was able to calm himself down. He didn't carry much on him, he still wore his master's old armor and he wore a black cloak over it, which had been torn here and there, and he kept the hood up to cover his face, but if anyone were to peer into his cloak's hood, they would find glowing green eyes staring right back at them. His eyes no longer held the same brightness they used to, they had dulled over the years. Losing your loved ones can do that to even the strongest man alive. Perseus had also received a prophecy from the fates a few years ago as well, while he did not care about what happened to the Gods of Olympus, he did not want innocent people to die and vowed to protect them from what was coming. But he knew that would big was coming and the sense of death lingered around him, pressuring him. A bright light popped up in front of him and when the light died off, there standing in front of him was no other than the wisdom goddess, Athena. He sneered, "What do you want?" He could tell the goddess was already angry and and she was holding herself back from doing something. "I wish to talk to you Perseus." "It's been years since you and the rest of the Gods have stopped talking to me, I have no intention on helping you, now please leave so I may continue on my path." Perseus brushed past the goddess and started walking again, one step at a time, he had all the time in the world. "The rules are changing Perseus, we have no control over what is happening. We, the Gods are begging you. We've lost many of our demigod children and we need not lose anymore." Athena was almost on her knees begging him, but he had no mercy left in his heart. He stopped walking for a brief second, turned his head to the side a little and simply said, "No." Ω Perseus walked down the small road the led to a small burial site that he had personally dug up to bury his master, Achilles. In his hand, he carried a black rose and laid it over the grave like he had been doing ever since Achilles had died. The black rose was his favorite flower, to a normal person it might symbolize death or bad luck, but to Achilles it symbolized life out of death, to Achilles it meant that not even death can hold you back, and that you are not limited to death either. The black rose was also the first thing Achilles had given him when he found him. He smiled at that memory, it was the earliest memory he had of them together and for the first time in a couple decades he truly smiled. "Anyone can rise above and become a hero." Achilles had once told him in his younger years. "You know, he wouldn't want you to stand here and brood over his grave everyday." Perseus had to smile at that voice as well, it did after all belong to his only mother figure in his life, Thetis. Thetis walked over to stand by Perseus and lifted a hand to cup his cheek, "My son would've wanted you to help, I believe that in your heart you have immense love Perseus. You are the only one that can help our world. I told this to Achilles before he left for Troy and I'll tell you as well, if you stay here then you'll eventually find a wife and settle down and start a family, and despite being immortal no one will know your name, you will be forever lost in the history books. but however if you do decide to help the God's in their darkest hour then you will be faced with death and in the end you will be rewarded, but know this, there is no good or bad in this world, there is only power and everyone wants something, and some will go far and beyond to get what they want. Sometimes the fates will put you against tough decisions, and sometimes life may get very bad for you, or very good, but everything all comes back to the middle." With that the goddess smiled and disappeared. 'Regression to the mean, eh.' Perseus thought, everything would eventually come back and meet in the middle, things couldn't be too bad or too good for a long period of time, balance was essential. "I know that you're watching over me, and I want you to know that I will forge my own path from now on." Perseus softly stated and walked off. All that was left of him was the black rose, and the petal's slowly fell off one by one and in return grew white petals, a symbol of the peace that was created within Perseus.. Ω The years had come and go, and many generations had left an impact on the world, some good, some bad. Wars were fought and there must always be a winner and a loser. But everything led back to the Gods, their children fought in the wars, their children were also some of the brightest inventors the world had ever seen. But some things never change, no matter how many times you try to change it. The gods were still egotistical and ignorant of what was truly happening. There were a few amongst them that were worried about what was going to happen, and they were scared, and they had every right to be. They had no idea of what was coming for them, all they could do was sit helplessly, paranoid if something was going to happen any second. There was a camp for demigods, Perseus was told, and it was directed by his old friend Chiron, he was glad that at least Chiron was well and happy even if he wasn't. Perseus stared in wonder at the world around him, never had he imagined the advancement in technology would get this far, but that was before he got himself immersed with the world of technology and liked how the mortal's lived their everyday life and often considered himself one of them. He hadn't received anything from the Gods since Athena appeared before him that one day years ago. The gods closed themselves off from the rest of the world, which again proved their ignorance for their own children. Over the years he had pushed most of his worries to the back of his mind, and didn't really think of the girl that stole his heart anymore, and if he did the aching in his heart would return and he would ask himself why this pain was still there, she was probably dead by now, there was no way she could've lived this long. He also no longer felt any sadness towards the death of his master Achilles as much as he used to, he had finally come to terms with his death and accepted the fact that Achilles was much more happier in the underworld than in the world of the living. It was his way of freedom. His master always talked about how he saw the faces of the men he killed every time he slept, maybe it was his way of making peace with himself and with those he killed. As far as Perseus knew Achilles would've wanted him to be happy. The only person he wished he kept in contact throughout all the years was with his mother figure, Thetis. He hadn't seen her in years, she just like the gods hadn't tried contacting him either. He had also befriended a few mortals who had eventually died and he was happy for them as well. The envy he felt was no longer there and instead he wanted to make the most out of his immortality by helping others in need. He had helped the United States win the world wars by aiding them in their time of need, he was the one who had given them the idea of the atomic bomb. He had helped many third world countries from the shadows over the years, giving them access to food and water, building them shelters, etc. The gods being ignorant and prideful always let their anger cloud their judgement and would also let loose a natural disaster and Perseus took it upon himself to help the victims in need as much as he could. He considered himself a helping hand that was hidden in the shadows. "Halt! State your name and business." He had not realized it but here he was standing in front of that camp he had heard about, maybe it was time to meet his old friend Chiron once again. He had finally come to the camp that was so talked about by the nature spirits and other mythical forest creatures, in front of him stood a short, scrawny little kid no older than fourteen. He chuckled, "I have come to speak with Chiron." The kid in front of him was very hesitant, after all, it wasn't everyday a man wearing a black cloak came and asked for Chiron, the kid eventually nodded and let him pass. The camp was very beautiful in Perseus' eyes, he lowered his hood to get in all the detail he could, he could see hundreds of children running around and bustling from place to place. He walked down the big hill to see a large ocean sparkling under the noon sun. He sensed a godly presence in the largest building that was situated in the very middle of the camp and decided to walk there as well, and brushed off the kid that had walked inside with him, and told him that he would find his own way around. He walked up the stairs to the porch and let himself in, in front of him was man who would not stop complaining about not having wine but he immediately stopped when Perseus walked in and his eyes widened, the amount of power he felt coming off the man that was standing in the room was immense, and it rolled off of him in waves. "Perseus?" A centaur walked into room, it's hooves hitting against the wood floor. His face was full of surprise when he asked, "It's been many years since I've seen you, that last time I saw you, you were just a little boy training under Achilles." "Hello Chiron, yes it's been many years since I saw you as have the years treated you my old friend?" "Ah, still training heroes as usual Perseus, as you can remember I did train you for a few days while Achilles was away." He laughed for a few seconds before straightening up, "Perseus, I would like to introduce you to one of our camp directors Dionysus." Perseus looked into the eyes of the wine god sitting down in front of him and he could visibly see the god shiver with fear, he ignored him and walked closer to Chiron, "Let's talk in private Chiron, we have a lot to tell each other." Ω "Is it true? The disappearances of the god's children?" Perseus asked calmly. Chiron crossed his arms and sighed, "I'm afraid so, there is a child missing about once a week, and is found dead a month or so later, and this is has been going on for years now. But here is the interesting part, we've found many burial sites but with no bodies in them so we are assuming that whoever is taking the bodies is burying them and then digging them back up." "That does sounds interesting Chiron, have the god's been notified?" Chiron shook his head no, "They have been silent for many months now." Chiron paced around and ran his hand through his hair, "The ancient laws no longer matter anymore. The rules are changing. Someone or something is trying to change them and I'm afraid that they're succeeding." Perseus looked at his old friend for a while, he hadn't known Chiron for a very long time but to him Chiron was always a very calm person and to see him worried like this made Perseus knew that something was wrong. But he would not dare to help the gods even in their time of needs. Not again. Not after what they did to him and took everything from him. Chiron nodded his head, "I'll prepare a room for you here, dinner is about to start soon, I'll be heading down to the mess hall soon, we can talk later Perseus." Perseus nodded his no, "I'll be leaving soon, I only came to visit you." Chiron turned to walk out before he turned his head and nodded, "Very well, do what you have always done Perseus, protect your friends and family." and with that he walked out leaving Perseus alone. "I have no friends or family left." He whispered softly to himself, his tone full of sadness. He had left the camp soon after, he didn't have anyone important to him there so why bother staying. Unknown Location "Your condition has been terminated." "No! Please! Stop! Give me another chance! I promise that I'll try harder this time." The boy laying on the ground cried and begged for his life to be spared. "Your condition has been terminated. You have been deemed a failure." Standing around the boy were three black silhouettes, each one had a rough, regal look on their faces. The leader of the group raised his arm and attached to his arm was a mechanism that had a blade on the top, he lowered it the boy's neck and stabbed his neck really quickly and the boy fell, bleeding a dark red The leader turned to the masked man next to him, "Bring in the next subject." Seconds later a different boy was brought in kicking and screaming. The three men stood around the boy, their bodies were big and muscular. "Strap him down." All three men had a different job, and each and every one of them was quite good at it. The supposed leader brought up the mechanism in his arm again and changed it from a blade to a vise grip, he told the second man to hold the subject's mouth opened and lowered the vise grip and pulled out all four of his canine teeth and the subject cried out in pain, "Please stop! It hurts so much!" "Get me the DNA" The one on the left blurred out from existence and his body kept vibrating, and brought back with him a small tube filled with liquid. The third man injected the subject's body with the dna and the boy reared back and lifted his head up and his eyes turned completely black and then turned normal and the boy's screams got louder. "Subject surgery complete. Condition: Subject has taken the DNA without a problem and will start seeing changes in the next couple hours." The three men turned back and walked out and blurred out of existence, leaving the boy tied down to the table in pain. A few hours had passed and the boy started waking up, the masked men blurred into existence once again to observe the changes in the boy. "Condition: The subject's body has taken the DNA and is changing as we speak." The boy woke up, and realized he was still strapped, the leader snapped his fingers and the straps around the boy were unstrapped. The boy got off the table and placed his feet on the floor, his head was lowered as if waiting to be told to speak. The boy's body began changing, his nails extended into long razor sharp talons, his eyes gave way to slits and two large wings grew from his back. "Condition: Injection of Hrsvelgr's DNA has been a success." The leader calmly stated. "Your mission is to bring me Perseus." A/N - Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for the next chapter.
