Jelina stared at the pregnancy test.
For several seconds, she couldn't breathe.
Two lines.
Two faint, unmistakable pink lines.
Her fingers began to tremble.
“No…” The word came out as a whisper.
She looked at the test again, almost expecting the second line to disappear.
It didn't.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“I'm pregnant.”
She covered her mouth with one hand.
A strange mixture of disbelief, happiness and fear rushed through her.
After three years of disappointment, after countless negative tests and whispered prayers, she was finally looking at the result she had wanted for so long.
She pressed her free hand against her stomach.
“There's a baby in there.”
Her knees suddenly weakened.
She sat on the edge of the bathtub, crying silently.
She wanted her mother.
She wanted to hear her voice telling her that everything would be all right.
She wanted Eliana.
Most of all, she wanted Kevin.
She reached for her phone.
Then stopped.
She looked at the test again.
She wanted to tell him in person.
She wanted to see his face when he found out.
Kevin arrived home almost an hour later.
He opened the door and immediately noticed the strange expression on Jelina's face.
“What happened?”
She stood in the middle of the living room.
“Kevin.”
He dropped his keys. “What?”
“Come here.”
He walked toward her.
“Are you okay?”
She smiled. Then she started crying.
Kevin's face changed.
“Jelina, what's wrong?”
She shook her head. “Nothing is wrong.”
“Then why are you crying?”
She reached into her pocket and pulled out the pregnancy test.
Kevin stared at it. He didn't understand at first.
Then his eyes widened.
“Is that…?”
Jelina nodded. “I'm pregnant.”
He froze.
The room went completely silent.
“Are you sure?”
“I took it twice.”
“You took two tests?”
She nodded, laughing through her tears. “They're both positive.”
Kevin stared at the test as though it were something impossible.
Then he looked at her. “We're going to have a baby?”
“Yes.”
He pulled her into his arms.
Jelina laughed as he lifted her off the floor and spun her around.
“Kevin!”
“We're having a baby!”
“I know!”
He put her down and held her face between his hands. “I'm going to be a father.”
Jelina smiled. “You are.”
He kissed her forehead repeatedly.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For not giving up on me.”
Her smile faded slightly. “I told you I wouldn't”
He pulled her against his chest.
For the first time in a long time, Kevin cried.
Jelina held him tightly.
She thought the tears were only happiness.
She didn't see the fear hidden beneath them.
The next morning, they returned to the fertility clinic.
Dr. Harrison confirmed the pregnancy.
“Congratulations.”
Jelina's eyes filled with tears.
“Thank you.”
Kevin shook the doctor's hand.
“We're really going to have a baby.”
“Yes.”
The doctor smiled.
“Everything looks promising so far. We'll schedule the necessary follow-ups.”
Jelina smiled.
She wanted to celebrate.
She wanted to tell everyone.
But there was one person she wanted to tell first.
Eliana.
When Eliana answered her phone, Jelina could barely get the words out.
“I'm pregnant.”
There was silence.
Then a scream.
“What?”
Jelina laughed. “I'm pregnant!”
“Oh my God!” Eliana started crying.
“I knew it!”
“You did not.”
“I did!”
“You told me not to get my hopes up.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Jelina laughed. “I wish you were here.”
“I wish I was there too.”
Eliana wiped her tears.
“How is Kevin?”
“He's so happy.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
Eliana smiled. “Then maybe this is the beginning of something good.”
Jelina looked down at her stomach.
“Maybe.”
She didn't know how right her sister would eventually be.
But not for the reason either of them imagined.
Across the city, Adriel was in a meeting when his phone vibrated.
He ignored it.
It vibrated again.
His assistant rarely interrupted meetings unless something was urgent.
He glanced at the screen.
Fertility Clinic.
His expression changed.
“Excuse me.”
He stepped outside and answered.
“Mr. Matthias?”
“Yes.” “We've received the pregnancy test results.”
Adriel's heartbeat quickened.
“And?”
“The patient is pregnant.”
He said nothing.
For the first time in years, Adriel found himself unable to immediately respond.
His child.
He had a child.
A biological child.
The knowledge should have satisfied him.
Instead, something strange happened.
His first thought wasn't about the heir.
It was about Jelina.
He remembered her standing behind the counter.
Her smile.
Her gentle voice.
The way she had looked at him without knowing who he was.
“Are you certain?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“How far along?”
“Approximately four weeks.”
Adriel closed his eyes briefly.
Four weeks.
His child had already begun growing inside her.
“Send me the confirmation.”
“Of course.”
He ended the call.
For several minutes, he remained standing in the hallway.
Then his attorney approached.
“Everything okay?”
Adriel looked at him.
“She's pregnant.”
His attorney's expression changed.
“Mrs. Mayfair?”
“Yes.”
“And the baby?”
“Mine.”
The words sounded strange coming from his mouth.
His attorney nodded slowly.
“What do you intend to do?”
Adriel looked through the glass walls of the conference room.
He could see his executives waiting for him.
His business could wait.
This couldn't.
“I want a complete legal assessment.”
“Regarding custody?”
“Everything.”
His attorney nodded.
“And Mrs. Mayfair?”
Adriel's jaw tightened.
“I need to know what kind of man her husband is.”
“Why?”
“Because if I'm going to be involved in my child's life, I need to know the environment my child will be born into.”
He walked back toward the meeting room.
But before he entered, he stopped.
“And arrange another meeting with the clinic.”
His attorney looked at him.
“Do you want to tell Mrs. Mayfair the truth?”
Adriel's eyes darkened. “Not yet.”
That evening, Jelina sat on the edge of her bed, looking at the ultrasound appointment information. She smiled.
Her dreams were finally becoming real.
She didn't know that another person was already preparing to enter her life.
A man she had met only once.
A man whose identity she didn't know.
A man who was already making plans concerning her unborn child.
And while Jelina lay in bed dreaming about the family she believed she was finally building with Kevin, Adriel sat alone in his penthouse staring at the photograph of her on his phone.
For the first time, the woman in the picture no longer looked like a stranger.
She looked like the mother of his child.
And somehow, that frightened him more than fatherhood itself.
Because Adriel had gone to her pastry shop intending only to satisfy his curiosity.
Now, he couldn't stop thinking about her.
