Jelina woke before sunrise.
For several minutes, she remained still, staring at the ceiling while the events of the previous day replayed in her mind.
The house.
Her mother's house. She was going to sell it.
A dull ache settled in her chest.
That house had been part of her childhood. It held photographs, memories and the faint scent of the perfume her mother used to wear.
It was the last thing their mother had left to her and Eliana.
And she was giving it up.
For a baby.For her marriage.For Kevin.
Jelina turned her head.Kevin was still asleep beside her.She watched him for a moment.
There had been a time when looking at him made her heart flutter.
She remembered their first date, the way he had made her laugh until her stomach hurt. She remembered the proposal, the small restaurant, the nervous smile on his face when he asked her to marry him.
She loved that man.
She wanted him back.
“Kevin.”
He stirred.“What?”
“We need to leave by nine.”
He opened his eyes.
“For the lawyer?”
She nodded.
“You're really selling it?”
Jelina sat up.
“We need the money for the IVF.”
Kevin looked away.
“I don't like this.”
“Neither do I.”“Then don't do it.”
Jelina stared at him.
“And what are we supposed to do?”
He had no answer.
After a moment, his expression softened.
“I hate that you're giving up something your mother left you because of me.”
Jelina reached for his hand.
“It's not just because of you.”
“But it is.”
“We're married, Kevin. Your problem is my problem.”
His eyes met hers.
“I'll make this up to you.”
She smiled.
“You don't have to.”
“I do.”
He squeezed her hand.
“I promise I'll give you the family you've always wanted.”
Jelina's eyes filled with tears.
She leaned forward and kissed his cheek.
“I believe you.”
She wanted to.
More than anything, she wanted to.
By noon, the paperwork was signed.
The house was officially going up for sale.
Jelina stood outside the lawyer's office with Eliana, watching the folder disappear into her sister's handbag.
Eliana looked at her.
“You can still change your mind.”
Jelina shook her head.“I can't.”
“Jelina, Mama left that house to both of us.”
“I know.”
“And you're giving up your share for IVF.”
“I have to try.”Eliana sighed.
“You always say that.”
“Because it's true.”Jelina looked at her sister.
“I love Kevin. I want our marriage to work. If having a baby gives us another chance, then I'll do whatever it takes.”
Eliana pulled her into a hug.
“I just hope one day you choose yourself too.”
Jelina smiled against her shoulder.“I'm choosing my family.”
Eliana didn't argue. But the worried expression on her face remained.
Two weeks later, Jelina and Kevin sat together in the fertility clinic.
The room was quiet and tastefully decorated, with soft music playing in the background.
A nurse approached.
“Mr. and Mrs. Mayfair?”They stood.
“Dr. Harrison is ready for you.”
Inside the consultation room, the doctor smiled warmly.“We're ready to begin the next stage.”
Jelina's heart raced.“Really?”
“Yes. Your preliminary tests look good.”
She instinctively reached for Kevin's hand.
He held it.
Dr. Harrison continued.“As we discussed, we'll be using donor sperm.”
Kevin nodded.“The donor is anonymous?”
“Completely.”
“And neither of us will know his identity?”
“Correct.”
Kevin relaxed slightly.“That works for us.”
Jelina glanced at him.
She knew this wasn't easy for him.
They had agreed together that biology wouldn't determine who the child's father was.
Kevin would be the father.
He would be the one who raised their child.
At least, that was what they both believed.
Dr. Harrison explained the next steps, including medication and the scheduled procedure.
When they left the office, Jelina felt lighter than she had in months.
They were finally moving forward.
That evening, Kevin came home carrying a small paper bag.
Jelina looked up from the kitchen counter.“What did you buy?”
“Something.”He handed it to her.
She opened the bag.
Inside was a pair of tiny white baby shoes.
Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Kevin…”
“I saw them and couldn't resist.”
She touched the tiny shoes with trembling fingers.
“They're so small.”
He smiled.
“Maybe our baby will wear them.”
Jelina threw her arms around him.
For the first time in months, she felt hopeful.
Maybe the baby would bring them closer.
Maybe they would laugh together again.
Maybe everything would be okay.
She didn't see the uncertainty hidden behind Kevin's smile.
She didn't know how much he needed this child to prove that he was still enough.
Across Manhattan, Adriel Matthias sat behind his desk overlooking the city.
Three months had passed since his divorce.
He hadn't dated.
He hadn't changed his mind.
If anything, he was more convinced than ever that marriage wasn't for him.
But he wanted a child.
A biological heir.
His grandfather had been asking questions, but Adriel had stopped discussing the matter.
He pressed a button on his desk.
“Send in Mr. Bennett.”
A few moments later, his attorney entered.
“I've found the clinic you requested.”
Adriel looked up.
“Reputable?”
“Among the best in New York.”
“Confidential?”
“Extremely.”
Adriel nodded.“I want everything handled privately.”
“Of course.”
“And I don't want my name connected to any future arrangements.”
Mr. Bennett paused.
“Are you considering a surrogate?”
“Eventually.”Adriel signed the necessary paperwork.
He would store his sperm at the clinic.
When the time came, he would select a suitable surrogate and have his child.
Simple.
Controlled.
No wife.
No emotional complications.
No woman could ever take his trust and destroy it again.
The next morning, Adriel arrived at the clinic.
The director personally escorted him into a private room.
“Everything is ready, Mr. Matthias.”
Adriel signed the final documents.
“Your samples will be stored securely,” the director assured him. “Only authorized personnel will have access.”
Adriel gave him a cold look.
“See that it stays that way.”
“Absolutely.”
Adriel left the clinic without another thought.
He had no reason to suspect anything could go wrong.
He had no reason to imagine that the carefully protected samples would ever leave the clinic without his permission. And he certainly had no reason to know the name of the woman whose life was about to become permanently connected to his.
Jelina Mayfair.
Because while Adriel was walking away from the clinic believing he had secured his future...
Jelina was being prepared to receive a donor sample that was supposed to belong to someone else.
And somewhere inside the clinic, two patients files had just been placed far too close together.
