“The School That Was Never Meant to Be Found”.

1051 Words
The first light of dawn sifted in through the open window and my eyes fluttered open. I rubbed my eyes gently, warding off the last bit of sleep in them as I looked outside the train. As the horn blared and the tracks weren’t moving anymore, I knew we had arrived. I walked down, grabbed my luggage and waited at the station for my ride from the school. I’d already emailed them about my resumption and of course they were thrilled to welcome me. I stood and waited, my stomach grumbling louder than the train horns. Impatience was quickly eating at me and I was slowly losing my mind. The longer I waited, the more my brain imagined my father barging out of one of these train doors to drag my stubborn a*s back home. But then I spotted a black van pull over far off. A man stepped down, his suit smart and neat. He walked like the ground worshiped him and I didn’t need a sorcerer to tell me that he was from the academy. I quickly dusted my clothes and stood straight as the distance between us disappeared. “Miss Mara, I presume” his deep voice sliced through my brain and I nodded. “You’re welcome, follow me.” Without another word, I trudged behind him whilst pulling my bags until we got to the van. Another man stepped down and helped me load them into the trunk and then we drove off. My head felt dizzy from all the bumping around, coupled with the fact that… I’d not eaten anything other than the steak my mother prepared for dinner yesterday. The drive was a long, boring one. I couldn’t speak because I had no idea whether or not I was supposed to. So I took my phone out and texted Tania. “I’ve arrived, thanks again for last night.” I clicked send and scrolled through my call logs… Expecting to see a million missed calls from my parents after turning my phone off the entire night. My thumb hovered over the call history and not a single beep from either of them. I felt a slight sting in my chest but that was it. They made this decision a lot easier for me to live with, so at least that’s something. After what felt like an eternity, the driver took a curve and the next street I saw was empty. Trees stood tall, the lands were bare and covered in thickets. No houses in sight, not even a grocery store or a gas station. It felt off, but there’s no turning back now. I spent my life savings on this school so there’s no way I’m giving up just because it’s located in the most isolated area I’ve ever seen. The driver kept going and I leaned against the window… Watching the trees speed past my eyes until the car finally slowed down in front of a tall gate. I sat up, my eyes opening fully as the dizziness I felt in my head quickly disappeared. “Whoa…” I gasped softly, as I fed my eyes. The brakes screeched as the van came to a halt and someone else pulled the door open for me. “Thank you..” I muttered as I helped myself down from the van. I’ve seen luxury before, obviously my father might be a dead beat but he has amazing taste. But this? This is a discovery. No wonder it’s secluded… people would kill to just glance at this place. “Good morning Miss..” a lady greeted me and I stopped gawking. “Good morning ma’am.” I responded. Her eyes scanned my clothes and I could see the dissatisfaction in her expression. “You can call me Miss Langford.” She said and I nodded. “The porters will take your bags into your dorm, in the meantime, let’s get you ready..” She ordered and turned away immediately. Her steps were hasty and almost impossible to keep up with. I had to jog so I won’t end up losing her. She finally stopped in front of a door and waited for me to catch up. My name was boldly written on the door and as she pushed it open… I noticed my bags had already been arranged inside the wardrobe. What kind of speed were those porters working with? “This is your room, your uniforms are already hanging in the wardrobe. Your timetable is on your reading desk, as well as a copy of the school’s rules and regulations. I do hope you’ve prepared your body and your mind for what’s ahead. Because Blackthorn won’t wait for you..” “I’ll try my best, Miss Langford..” I responded, keeping my head high. She stared at me for another moment and scoffed. “You do have potential. You just need a bath.” She muttered and walked away. I finally let go of the heavy sigh in my chest and quickly took my clothes off for a bath. The water felt warm, unlike what I imagined it to be. The school took note of my preferences and set my room up to that standard and something about that little detail made my heart flutter. I knew I made the right decision. I quickly changed into one of the uniforms… A beige pleated skirt way above my knee and lace tights underneath. The white shirt tucked neatly into the skirt and then I just threw on a cardigan because the weather was a bit chilly. I could barely recognize myself in the mirror because I didn’t remember the last time I dressed up this good. The shrill sound of a bell interrupted my thoughts and I picked up my already packed backpack and darted out of the room. Miss Langford was already waiting for me at the main entrance and she walked me to my first class. Everyone was already seated by the time I arrived and the moment I walked in, eyes turned to me. The professor stopped and stepped down from the podium, scanning me with his eyes. “I see we have someone new this semester..” he said to Miss Langford as she nudged me. “Go ahead Mara, introduce yourself..”
