the ex came to start a war
the after party was on the rooftop. city lights, champagne and fake smiles everywhere.
Damian hadn't let go of my hand since dinner.
"for the act." he'd whispered earlier.
but his grip felt...real.
"so" I said, trying to sound casual. "is your mom always like that?"
"she's testing you," Damian said. "you passed."
I snorted by insulting me?"
by not crying
I was about to answer when the music stopped.
A woman in a white designer gown walked in. red bottom heels
Damian necklace.
every Head turned.
Adesuwa.
I know the name from Google. Adesuwa Martins. Lagos socialite. Damian's ex of 3 years.
she walked straight to us. smiling like a shark.
"Damian " she purred.
"you didn't tell me you had a new pet."
Damian's face went blank. "Adesuwa. this isn't the place."
"oh? but it's your mother's birthday." she said eyes dragging over me.
"and I just had to meet the girl who replaced me in 2 weeks."
my stomach dropped.
I forced a smile. " Hi, I'm Amara."
"I know you are." Adesuwa said. " the waitress."
she turned to the crowd. "did you all know?
my ex is now dating staff. how economical."
people started whispering. phones came out.
my hands started shaking. #2 million couldn't fix this kind of embarrassment.
Damian stepped in front of me.
"that's enough."
"No." Adesuwa laughed." what's enough is you using some poor girl to make me jealous, we both know you don't love her.
then Damian did something I didn't expect.
He pulled me flush against him. one arm around my waist. the other hand came up to my face.
his thumb brushed my chick .
"Adesuwa." he said. voice low but for everyone to hear.
I don't need to prove anything to you. but since you asked.
he looked down at me. grey eyes. serious and then he kissed me.
not a peck. not a fake.
his lips were warm and tasted like wine.
for 3 seconds the whole world disappeared.
Rule #1: no kissing. broken
he pulled back. my brain was static.
"she's not a replacement." Damian said.
"she's my choice."
Adesuwas smile cracked. she threw her wine on the floor and stormed out.
the crowd erupted in whispers.
Damian let me go immediately, like he'd been burned.
"we need to talk." he muttered. then walked away.
I stood there, lips still tingling, with 200 people staring.
and my phone buzzed again
Damian: contract's over you just cost me millions . meet me in the car. now .
