Damien
Nadoria had two broken ribs, a ruptured appendix, and some extensive tissue damage. Thankfully, there was no severe organ damage. “I expect her to make a full recovery.”, my mother said with a smile. Nadoria’s aunt exhaled in relief. “Can I see her?”, she asked. My mother wasted no time in taking us both to the recovery unit. I didn’t know what to expect going in to see her, I just knew I wanted to. As Nadoria’s aunt opened the door, she gasped, made a cross over her head and chest, and ran to Nadoria’s side. I looked over at Nadoria and my heart broke within me. She was so pale, so still, so bruised. I walked over to the other side of her bed and held her hand in mine. Her hand seemed so small. “She will be just fine, son. Give her some time to wake up from the anesthesia.”, my mother said, patting my back. I nodded without looking at her. Nadoria’s aunt looked over at me and smiled. “She’s alive because of you. How could I ever repay you, mijo?”, she asked. I shook my head as I placed Nadoria’s hand on my cheek. “Her recovery will be more than enough for me.”, I said. I felt Ms. Rodriguez’s eyes on me as I closed my eyes, listening to Nadoria’s heartbeat.
Nadoria
I don’t remember when I had lost consciousness but when I came to, I didn’t recognize where I was. I blinked a few times and noticed that I was in a hospital room alone. After a few minutes, a woman that looked an awful lot like Damien walked in. She pulled up a stool next to my hospital bed and smiled at me. “Hello, Nadoria. I’m Dr. Wells. How are you feeling?”, she asked. I nodded groggily and tried to speak but my throat was scratchy and hoarse. She quickly got me a cup of water in which I slurped down quickly. “Thank you, doctor.”, I said softly. She waved her hand at me. “Call me Elaine, please.”, she said with a smile. I smiled back at her and called her name. “Good, now. I wanted to ask you about what happened. You were found in a janitor’s closet, beat within an inch of your life. Who did this to you?”, she asked. I paused for a minute, remembering the savage beating Angelica inflicted on me. She was part of a street gang and the last thing I wanted was to get anyone involved with her, so I lied. “I don’t...I don’t really remember.”, I said pretending to be surprised. She nodded and gently patted my hand. “It’s okay. You’ve been through a lot.”, she said as she opened my chart. She then listed everything I was diagnosed with, even the fact that they had to remove my appendix because it had ruptured. Angelica had done a serious number on me. “Also, you will be staying here for the next two days for observation and it will take about two months for your ribs to heal. You’ll need to allow your body time to recover, so I’m afraid going to campus is out of the question.”, she said in a compassionate voice. My eyes widened. No, this couldn’t be happening. I had to finish my degree. “But...I’m only a few weeks away from graduation. I have to go to class.”, I protested. No sooner did I say this, my aunt and Damien came walking through the door. My aunt practically ran to me, hugging me tight. “Ow, ow, ow, tia, mis costillas!”, I shouted in pain. She apologized a few thousand times before berating my face with kisses. “Oh, mija! I was so worried. When Damien called me I didn’t know what to expect but thank Dios, you’re okay.”, she said with tears in her eyes. I smiled at her, then looked over at Damien. He held coffee and a brown paper bag in his hands, which he quickly sat down and came closer to me. “Hey, you’re awake.”, he said with a concerned look on his face. I smiled, feeling heat rise up in my cheek. “Thank you for bringing me to the hospital.”, I said. He grinned at me and told me not to worry about it. “I’m just glad I found you in time. Mom would’ve had a tougher time on her hands had I not found you when I did.”, he said. I frowned as I looked at him, then at Dr. Wells. “Mother?”, I asked. Damien leaned back, pressing his mother’s cheek against his own. “Don’t you see the resemblance?”, he asked. I giggled slightly as much as my aching ribs would allow. “He called me when he found you, so by the time you got here we were ready for you.”, she said with a smile, patting Damien’s back. I gasped with relief and happiness. “Thank you. Thank you so much.”, I said with tears threatening to fall. Damien gently held my hand and squeezed it reassuringly. “And don’t worry about your classes. My father pulled some strings and made sure that you stayed enrolled. It’ll just be remote only from now. When your graduation date rolls around, you’ll be healed up enough to walk.”, he said. I exhaled, relieved.
Thanks to Damien, my bookbag was retrieved from the school. Nothing was stolen and my car wasn’t towed. So, he called for a tow truck to tow my car home and had my aunt grab my bookbag from the school. I sat silently watching TV from my hospital room as my observation period was nearing its end. I wondered for hours to myself just how in the world Damien was able to find me? Most importantly, why him? Why did it have to be the guy I was trying to forget? I exhaled noisily becoming bored of the hospital cable and decided to get up. I slowly rose from my bed like the occupational therapist taught me and slowly troughed to my hospital window. It was a very beautiful day, with not one cloud in the sky. Staring out my window only made me want to leave more. “I wish I could go outside.”, I thought to myself. “Catching cabin fever?”, I heard a voice sound from behind me. It was Damien, tall, gorgeous, muscular, Damien. He wore a t-shirt and some adidas joggers, looking handsome as sin. He was just perfect on purpose. “Yeah, hospitals have that effect on me.”, I said walking back over to my bed. I noticed that he had a bag in his hand. “What’s in the bag?”, I asked casually, avoiding his eyes. He then sat on the edge on my bed and sat the bag down in my lap. “A gift, from me to you.”, he said with a grin.
