The Saboteur's game

1103 Words
The Monday morning sunlight streamed through the Red Cross office windows, but the warmth couldn’t reach the tension that had settled over the place. Crystal walked in, her steps deliberate, her eyes scanning the room. Every face, every movement could mean something hidden. Carter was already at his desk, glancing up from a report. “Morning,” he said casually, though his eyes held concern. “Morning,” I replied, sliding into my chair. It had been a week since the warehouse test. The anonymous threats hadn’t stopped entirely, but I had grown more confident in noticing the subtle manipulations. Even so, I couldn’t shake the sense that something bigger was brewing. The First Sabotage By mid-morning, disaster struck. I was reviewing files for an upcoming meeting when my computer screen suddenly froze. Then a pop-up appeared, a warning in bold red letters: “File corruption detected. Unauthorized access.” My heart skipped a beat. I clicked frantically, but the critical report I had prepared for Leo—worth weeks of work—was gone. Every backup had been deleted. Carter appeared behind me immediately. “What happened?” “I… I don’t know,” I stammered. “Someone corrupted my files. The report… it’s gone.” He frowned, eyes scanning the office. “This is more than a test. Someone’s actively sabotaging you.” I felt a cold weight settle in my stomach. The subtle tests of the past weeks had prepared me for manipulation, but this… this was direct. Someone wanted to ruin me. The Investigation Begins Leo called me into his office almost immediately. His caramel skin glowed under the sunlight streaming through his window, but the usual calm in his expression was replaced by a tense determination. “Crystal,” he began, “I heard about the report.” “I don’t know who did it,” I admitted. “It wasn’t Lola… she’s suspended. But someone’s watching, and they’re trying to take me down.” Leo leaned forward. “This office has always had factions—people loyal to me, people loyal to others. Someone saw your rise as a threat. That’s all it is. But I want you to know… you’re not alone. We’ll find them.” I nodded, trying to steady my shaking hands. “I just… I can’t believe someone would go this far.” “You’d be surprised,” he said softly. “But your instincts have always been sharp. Trust them. And trust Carter. He’ll help you navigate this.” A Dangerous Alliance Carter met me in the hallway after the meeting. His eyes were serious, scanning for anyone who might be listening. “We need to be careful. Whoever did this… they’re good. We’re talking about someone who knows the system inside and out.” I frowned. “Do you think it could be someone from Lola’s circle?” “Maybe,” he said. “But it could also be someone completely new, someone we haven’t even suspected. The point is… we need to watch, learn, and strike back carefully.” We spent the rest of the afternoon retracing my steps, reviewing access logs, and carefully observing the office. I realized for the first time that strategy was now as important as work performance. Every glance, every casual comment, every movement could hold a clue. The First Encounter That evening, as the office emptied, I stayed behind to organize files manually—backup copies of everything I could. Carter joined me quietly, leaning against a desk as I worked. “You’re taking this seriously,” he said, watching my careful movements. “I have to,” I replied. “One mistake and someone could ruin me.” He nodded. “And if they try anything tonight, I’ll be right here. Don’t forget that.” As if on cue, a shadow moved near the far side of the office. I stiffened. Carter noticed immediately. “Who’s there?” he called, stepping forward. The figure froze, then bolted. Carter gave chase, and I followed at a distance. It was a woman, dressed in business attire, but her movements were furtive, panicked. When Carter caught her near the stairwell, she struggled, but he held her firmly. “Who sent you?” he demanded. The woman’s eyes widened in fear. “I… I was just following orders!” “From who?” I asked, stepping closer. Her gaze flickered toward the shadows. “You’ll find out… soon. They’re watching. Always watching…” Before I could ask more, she bolted again, disappearing into the stairwell. We were left standing there, tense and frustrated, knowing this was only the beginning. The Aftermath Back at my desk, I felt a mixture of fear and determination. Whoever was behind this had resources, knowledge, and influence. But I also realized something crucial: I wasn’t alone. Carter had my back, Leo trusted me, and Isabella—despite being quiet—was watching her own files, protecting hers and mine. That night, as I walked home, the streets were quiet. Carter stayed with me, walking a few steps behind, his presence reassuring. “You’re handling this well,” he said softly. “More than anyone could expect. And… we’re going to get through it.” “I hope so,” I admitted, my voice barely audible. “I can’t afford to make a mistake.” “You won’t,” he said firmly. “Not while I’m here.” His hand brushed mine briefly, and I felt that strange, undeniable connection again. But there was no time for distractions—not with the game we were in, and not with the stakes climbing higher with every passing hour. The Stakes Rise The next morning, I walked into the office with a renewed sense of purpose. The sabotage had changed everything—I had to be smarter, faster, and more alert than ever. Every email, every file, every glance could hold a clue. Even the staff who seemed friendly now felt like potential threats. But instead of fear, I felt a steely determination. I had survived Lola, the warehouse test, and the anonymous threats. This was just another challenge. I realized something profound: I wasn’t just a secretary anymore. I was a strategist, a fighter, and a protector. Every move I made now had weight and consequence. And I would not allow anyone—no one—to take me down. As I sat at my desk, Carter sliding a fresh cup of coffee toward me, I made a silent promise: I will uncover the saboteur. I will protect my allies. And I will win.
