Shadows of the Crown

530 Words
Elara stood at the edge of the ruined courtyard, her fingers brushing the stone railing worn smooth by centuries. The garden below was quiet now—eerily so. No whispering leaves, no flickering lights. Just silence. Since the prophecy's final lines had been unearthed, the entire realm seemed to hold its breath. The words had been clear: “She who walks the garden of the dead shall awaken what even death cannot silence.” The council was divided. Some wanted to protect Elara. Others wanted her bound, silenced, or worse. Being Luna no longer meant protection—it made her a threat. A symbol. A spark. Kaelen had vanished again. No note, no promise. Just the lingering warmth of his presence and the distant echo of his heartbeat in hers. “Elara,” came a quiet voice behind her. She turned. It was Nyra, her most trusted handmaiden and secret keeper. “They’re gathering. The High Elders. They’ve summoned you.” “For judgment or allegiance?” Elara asked. Nyra hesitated. “I think... both.” Elara exhaled, grounding herself. The power that had begun to stir in her veins since entering the garden no longer whispered—it roared. Not just magic, but memory. Lives. History. Buried power. Today, she would no longer run from it. She would embrace it. Even if it meant burning the crown, and everyone beneath it. The chamber of the High Elders was cold—cold in the way that had nothing to do with weather and everything to do with power. Thirteen cloaked figures sat around the obsidian table, their faces hidden behind carved masks representing the founding wolves of old. Elara walked in alone. No guards. No allies. Only her shadow, and the garden’s spirit that had begun to follow her everywhere, an unseen tether humming beneath her skin. “Luna Elara,” the central figure spoke, voice deep and ancient. “You’ve been summoned to answer for the disturbances surrounding the Garden of the Forgotten.” “I did not disturb it,” she said, calm. “It called me.” Murmurs rippled. One Elder leaned forward. “And what did it say?” Elara met every mask without flinching. “That we’ve all been lied to. That the throne we serve sits atop a grave it pretends not to see. That you’ve buried truths deeper than bodies.” A silence fell like a dropped blade. Then another Elder asked, “And what will you do with this truth, Luna?” She smiled, just faintly. “I’ll dig deeper.” Power stirred in her voice—unmistakable, undeniable. One of the masks trembled. Another cracked. “You dare threaten the Order?” someone hissed. “No,” Elara said softly. “I promise it. You built your rule by silencing the dead. I speak for them now.” A wind burst through the chamber, howling like a thousand voices. The torches blew out. Only Elara remained lit—her eyes glowing faintly with a light pulled from the garden below the grave. And in that moment, every Elder knew: The Luna had become something else. Not just a leader. A reckoning.
