Chapter Two: The Man Behind the Mask

1012 Words
The door creaked open. Lena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She stepped back instinctively, nearly dropping the folder in her hands as the man standing in the doorway locked eyes with her. Ethan. But not the Ethan she had shared breakfast with that morning. This version of him stood tall and composed, every trace of awkwardness gone. His dark hair was neatly brushed back, revealing sharp features that looked almost too perfect beneath the dim office light. Even the way he held himself was different—cold confidence replacing quiet humility. Dangerous. That was the only word her mind could form. “You’ve been searching,” he said calmly. Lena swallowed hard. “Who are you?” His gaze dropped briefly to the papers scattered across the desk. Her hospital records. Surveillance photos. Financial reports. Then he looked back at her. “That depends,” he replied softly. “Which version of me are you asking about?” A chill crawled down her spine. “You lied to me.” “No,” he said. “I simply didn’t tell you everything.” “That’s the same thing!” Her voice echoed against the walls, sharper than she intended. But fear was quickly turning into anger. “You watched me?” she demanded, holding up the file. “You investigated my life?” His expression didn’t change. “I needed to know whether you could be trusted.” “You married me under false pretenses!” “And you married me pretending to be someone else.” The words hit like a slap. Lena froze. For the first time since entering the mansion, she had no defense. Because he was right. She had lied too. But this—this was different. She hadn’t built an entire second identity. “Who was the man in the study last night?” she asked quietly. A flicker crossed his eyes. So brief she almost missed it. “You saw him.” “I saw someone with your face.” Silence stretched between them. Then Ethan stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. The soft click sounded final. “His name is Adrian Vale,” he said at last. “My older brother.” Brother. The tension in Lena’s chest loosened slightly—but only slightly. Twins. That explained the identical faces. It explained the voices. But not the secrecy. Not the lies. “And which one are you really?” she asked carefully. Ethan’s jaw tightened. “The one you married.” “That’s not an answer.” “No,” he admitted. “It isn’t.” He moved past her toward the desk, gathering the files with controlled movements. Lena watched him carefully, noticing details she hadn’t before. The expensive watch hidden beneath his sleeve. The faint scar near his wrist. The intelligence behind his eyes. This man was not ordinary. Not even close. “You should leave this room,” he said quietly. Lena crossed her arms. “Not until you tell me what’s happening.” Ethan exhaled slowly, as though deciding how much truth she could handle. “My family owns Vale Corporation.” Her eyes widened immediately. Everyone knew Vale Corporation. It was one of the most powerful business empires in the country—technology, finance, luxury real estate. The mysterious billionaire CEO had become almost mythical in the media because no one ever saw him clearly. Rumors surrounded him constantly. Some claimed he was ruthless. Others said he barely existed at all. “You’re connected to them?” Lena whispered. Ethan almost smiled. “Connected?” He stepped closer. “I built half of it.” The room spun. “No,” she breathed. “That’s impossible.” “You think I’m worthless because that’s what you were told.” His tone remained calm, but there was something sharp beneath it now. “Vanessa never bothered learning the truth.” Lena stared at him, remembering every cruel thing her cousin had said. Ugly. Useless. A burden. But standing here now, Ethan looked nothing like the pathetic man Vanessa described. He looked powerful. Controlled. Like someone pretending to be weak on purpose. “Why hide it?” Lena asked. His eyes darkened slightly. “Because people become honest when they think you’re beneath them.” The answer unsettled her more than she expected. “How long have you been pretending?” “A long time.” “And Adrian?” At the mention of his brother, Ethan’s expression hardened instantly. “That situation is complicated.” “That’s not an answer either.” “It’s the only one you’re getting tonight.” Frustration flared inside her. “You dragged me into this without explaining anything!” “I dragged you into nothing,” he replied coldly. “You accepted the deal willingly.” Her anger faltered again. Because once more—he wasn’t wrong. Every choice had led her here. Her mother’s medical bills. Vanessa’s offer. The desperate signature on a marriage contract she barely understood. Ethan studied her silently for a moment before speaking again. “Your mother’s surgery has already been scheduled.” Lena blinked. “What?” “The hospital received payment this morning.” Emotion crashed into her so suddenly she nearly lost balance. “She… she’s getting the surgery?” “Yes.” Tears burned unexpectedly behind her eyes. For days she had been surviving on fear alone. Fear of losing the only family member who had ever truly loved her. And now— “She’ll live?” Lena whispered. Ethan looked at her carefully. “If the procedure succeeds, her chances are excellent.” Relief hit so hard it hurt. Before she could stop herself, she whispered, “Thank you.” Something unreadable flickered across his face. Not pride. Not satisfaction. Something quieter. More dangerous. Because for the first time since arriving at the mansion, Lena realized something terrifying: She didn’t know whether Ethan Vale was the villain in this story— Or the only reason she was still standing at all.
