Ethan was in front of me in seconds and he ripped my arm away from Darian who responded with his own growl. Mason and his mate were there next. He shoved me behind him next to her and they began talking in low tones.
“Girl, who is that?” His mate asked me.
“‘My own mate,” I said numbly. She looked at me with a shocked expression.
“Mason gave me the short version of what’s been going on. How did he find you?”
“I have no clue,” I responded.
From behind Mason and Darian I could see a two figures- one short and one tall. Emily and Jacob must have come with him. I was getting more and more nauseated by the minute. Mason’s mate seemed to notice because she placed a firm hand on his arm before nodding to me. He looked me over and nodded back to Darian before turning again. Darian grabbed my elbow gently and made to lead me out before I doubled over. Pain shot through my abdomen and I grabbed my belly instinctively. I could feel fluid trickling down my legs and I stood there in shock.
“Anna!” I hear Ethan scream. Out of the corner of my eye I saw him scrambling to get to me but Mason held the line- just barely.
“Get her out of here!” Mason yelled and Darian picked me up carefully and carried me to the infirmary. Mason’s mate followed close behind us. Darian kicked open the door and sat me down on a bed. Pain rolled over me as another contraction came. Mason’s mate grabbed my hand.
“Breath, breathe...” she instructed until the contraction passed. “I’m Nadia by the way,” she said casually.
“Anna” I replied laying my head back on the pillow.
Miriam came bustling in the room with supplies and Mason was hot on her heels. I could sense the distress in Mason’s voice as he whispered something to Miriam. She shook her head dramatically and pointed her finger in his face before turning and ignoring him completely. He looked furious until he turned to to Nadia and I. His eyes soften at the sight of her before he turned to me. Realizing the situation again he turned towards the door as a crash came from it. At the same time, another contraction hit and I groaned in pain. Loud screaming came from behind the door and Ethan came running through, his eyes were wild. The contraction ended and I took the time to study him. He’d lost weight since the last time I saw him because his clothes hung from him in ways they hadn’t before. He took two strides and was at my other side. I immediately flinched away from him and he dropped his head into his hands.
“Anna, please...” he begged.
I shook my head slightly at Nadia and she turned stone faced to Ethan. “Get out,” She ordered. He gave her a murderous look.
“She said get the f**k out,” Mason added as I screamed through another contraction.
“I’m not leaving until she tells me to,” Ethan growled back.
“That is ENOUGH!” Miriam yelled as she rushed back into the room. “You and you, get out. For goodness sakes she is trying to have a baby!” She pointed to both men in the room. Ethan hesitantly got up and walked to the door with one last look at me. Mason followed behind.
“s**t, I thought they would never leave,” Nadia swore.
Sweat was pouring down my head as I turned it to look at her. “Men” I rolled my eyes. She laughed out loud and I returned it. Soon, all three of us were cackling at the situation. It felt good to laugh, even during the circumstances. Another contraction hit and it was worse than the others. It felt like my insides were being ripped out from me. Nadia held my hand and I knew I was probably crushing her but she didn’t show it. Miriam came over to check the placement of the baby.
“Miriam, your face is making me pretty damn worried right now,” I accused her.
“Anna, the baby is breach. I’m... I’m going to have to turn it,” she looked up at me.
“How bad is that going to hurt?” I asked reluctantly.
“On a scale of 1-10, it’ll be a 15,” she said grimly.
“Anna, I think it’s time we entertain getting your mate back in here,” Nadia said quietly. “I know... I know... but he can help you with the pain.”
I thought about it for a moment. Miriam’s face said it was the right thing to do. I nodded reluctantly. Nadia left immediately and came back with Ethan.
“You look like hell,” I told him through a small chuckle. He didn’t seem to think it was funny as he took a chair on the other side of me. He reached out slowly and took my hand in his bringing it to his lips as if it were the last thing he would ever do.
“Okay dear I’m going to start,” Miriam said.
“Anna... Anna... look at me,” Ethan said softly. I didn’t.
The pain was excruciating. I could feel the baby moving in ways that was never intended. Ethan held to my hand as I screamed myself hoarse. The unbearable pain came to an end and I stole a glance at him. His face was lined with tears as he studied mine back at me.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” he said over and over. My face must have said it all because he opened his mouth to say it again but stopped short. I squeezed his hand and felt the strength from what was left of our mate bond soothe some of the pain.
“Anna, on your next contraction I need you to push, okay?” Miriam said with unreadable expression. I nodded my head and on cue the contraction came.
“You can do this baby,” Ethan’s voice was low in my ear. I screamed and in one push it was over. I heard a cry and I looked to Ethan as Miriam worked to wrap my baby in a bundle of blankets. I sighed happily knowing my baby was okay and let myself succumb to sleep.
. . .
Ethan POV
I knew that she didn’t want me in there but I couldn’t force myself to get up and leave her. My mate laid exhausted on the bed in front of me and our sleeping baby girl next to her in a bassinet. Anna stirred for a minute before sighing and shifting her head to the other side of her pillow. I brushed a strand of blonde hair out of her face and tucked it behind her ear. She rarely let me touch her on good days when she was first home with me, I knew there was no way she would let me once she was awake. Up until now, I thought she was dead. She hadn’t marked me. I wanted to wait until she was ready, but that meant when she went over that cliff that I didn’t know if she was dead or alive. I ground my molars and put my head between my knees. I didn’t know how to help her but I was desperate. I was just glad she let me be in here when our daughter was born. Anna stirred again but this time she opened her eyes.
“Hey baby,” I whispered to her reaching for her hand. She groggily looked around as if to examine where she was upon the realization, she shot up strait looking around the room.
“She’s right here,” I said getting up to hand our daughter to her. Anna eyed me carefully as I placed a pink bundle in her arms. I stood back to take them both in. Tears were forming in her eyes as she met her daughter for the first time. I knew the feeling, but I had had the last ten hours with her so I let my mate have this time.
“I want to name her Elizabeth,” she said quietly.
“We could call her Lizzie or Beth?” I suggested.
“Lizzie” she seemed to think about it before nodding her head.
“Hi Lizzie,” I said to her leaning over Anna to stroke her cheek.
“Where’s Miriam?” She asked as if snapping back to reality, realizing we were alone.
“I’ll go get her,” I assured my mate, heading out the door to find the doctor with one last look at our daughter.
