The next few days came and went in a blur of routine. Everything seemed normal, until the moment I was about to clock out and head home. That's when he walked in—the most handsome man I had ever seen. He strode into the store to get fuel, his presence commanding attention despite his quiet demeanor.
He only spoke a few words, his shyness adding an air of mystery. I felt a strong urge to strike up a conversation, to break through that reserved exterior and discover who he was. But before I could gather my courage, he had already made his quick exit from the store.
I watched him leave, torn between the desire to call out and the fear of coming across as too forward. The encounter left me with a lingering sense of curiosity and an unexpected flutter in my chest. I couldnt seem to get him out of my mind hoping id see him again i headed home.
When I arrived, I noticed I wouldn't be able to fit into the driveway due to a different vehicle parked there. I didn't recognize the van, As they turned around, I realized it was Donny and Jacob. "Hey guys," I said with a smile. "What brings you here?"
Donny replied, "Well, I was thinking I have a friend I wanted you to meet, so I came to see if you would ride down to Kenny's to meet him."
"Sure, I guess," I said, curiosity piqued. "Let me grab Anna so she can meet Chrissy and April."
After packing up Anna and securing her in her car seat, I turned back to tell Mom and Dad that I wouldn't be long. I mentioned that I wasn't feeling the greatest and had to work the morning shift tomorrow. Once in the car, my mind started to wander, curiosity piqued about who this friend could be. I shifted into drive and began the journey down the road to find out.
When I arrived at Kenny's, I noticed one unfamiliar face standing among the group. I parked the car and was about to get out when I heard April calling my name.
"Lizzy, hey Lizzy! What are you up to today?"
"Oh, nothing much. I just got off work and figured I'd bring Anna over to meet you," I replied.
With that, I unbuckled Anna and lifted her into my arms, proudly showing her off.
Donny came striding over with his friend in tow. "Hey Lizzy, this is my friend Nolon," he introduced. Nolon was a bit taller than me, with sun-kissed blond hair and the clearest blue eyes I'd ever seen. Despite his good looks, he wasn't exactly my type.
"Nice to meet you, Nolon," I greeted him with a polite smile. He must have felt the same, as he didn't make much effort to keep the conversation going. Instead, he stood there, looking slightly awkward.
Sensing the lack of connection, I excused myself and headed towards April, who was beaming with excitement. "Lizzy, hey Lizzy! What are you up to today?" she called out.
"Oh, nothing much. I just got off work and thought I'd bring Anna over to meet you," I replied, lifting Anna from her car seat and cradling her in my arms. April's eyes lit up as she reached out to gently touch Anna's chubby cheeks.
"She's adorable!" April exclaimed, and the joy in her voice made the awkward encounter with Nolon fade away. It felt good to be among friends, and I knew that, despite the ups and downs, I had found a community where Anna and I could thrive.. It wasnt long before i was ready to go home and call it a night. After Anna was strapped in her seat we headed home to get cleaned up and head to bed.
The next morning, the sun was shining brightly in the sky, casting a golden glow over everything. A warm breeze flowed through the air, rustling the leaves and bringing with it the scent of blooming flowers. My drive to work was peaceful, a serene 15 minutes that allowed me to soak in the beauty of the morning.
When I arrived at work, my manager was waiting for me in the office. My nerves instantly gave me an uneasy feeling, a knot forming in my stomach. I couldn't fathom why she wanted to see me right away. I thought I had been doing well, especially since I was starting to get pretty good at the register.
As I stepped into the office, I stayed silent, waiting for her to explain. She looked at me with a half-crooked smile and finally said, "Well, I called you in today because you've turned into quite the good employee. I don't know if you've heard yet, but I was given the Morgantown store to take over. That means Michelle is going to step up as manager, and that will leave an open position as assistant manager. So, do you think you're up to it and can handle the responsibilities that come with the position?"
I was shocked. I couldn't believe that after just a couple of months working here, I was being offered a promotion. Without thinking twice, I squealed, "Yes! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I won't let you down. I'll continue to improve myself and do my best."
"Very well then," she said with a smile. "I'll make your new name tag and adjust the schedule. You're free to go back to work now."
Holy s**t, I just got promoted! I went from making $8.45 to $9 an hour. It may not seem like much, but it's worth it. After receiving that good news, the day seemed to fly by. My smile never left my face all day. When it was time to clock out, I raced home, excited to share the good news with Dad. He'll be so proud of me.
As I was driving up the winding road, I noticed someone standing in the ditch on the side. The closer I got, the clearer it became—it was Nolon. I slowed down and stopped right beside him, rolling my window down, planning to ask if he was alright. Just as he began to speak, I saw another figure—a tall, handsome guy with brown hair and striking blue eyes—standing nearby.
Nolon brought me back to reality when he asked if they could both have a cigarette. I wanted to ask who his friend was, but something came over me, and I felt my cheeks burning with a bright shade of red, a telltale sign of my nerves. Thankfully, as his friend made his way over, Nolon introduced us. My, oh my, was he handsome.
When I told him my name, I had the cheesiest smile spread across my face. He was very polite, thanking me for the cigarette and inviting me to stop by his house at the end of the holler later on to chat with him and Nolon.
"I'll think about it," I replied, mentioning that I had just gotten off work and needed to get home to my little girl. Thanking him, I said I might see him later. As I pulled away, I swear he winked at me. I don't know if I imagined it or if he really did wink.
With his handsome face floating in my mind, I got home, still excited about my workday and ready to tell my parents the good news. I asked my mom if she would watch Anna for a little bit so I could go hang out with them and get to know them better. Once she agreed, I showered and changed.
