CHAPTER SEVEN
Anna’s POV
When I woke up, the first thing I saw was a white ceiling.
The second thing I noticed was the strong smell of disinfectant. Hospital. Definitely hospital.
The third thing I noticed was that someone was holding my hand like their life depended on it.
I slowly turned my head and saw Stella sitting beside me. Her face looked tight with worry, her eyes red like she hadn’t slept.
Stella? When did she get back?
“Anna, you’re awake!” Stella suddenly shouted, jumping up so fast she almost knocked the chair over.
I smiled weakly.
“Hi…”
“Hey,” Charles said from somewhere behind her.
It was only then I noticed him. He was sitting on a chair near the door, looking like he hadn’t slept either. He stood up and walked closer to the bed.
“How are you feeling?” he asked.
I moved my hands and my legs a little. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel any pain.
“Great,” I replied honestly.
Then confusion hit me.
“What am I doing here?” I asked. The last thing I remembered was falling into Evan’s arms.
Speaking of Evan… where was he? Shouldn’t he be here, watching me like a hawk just so he could find another way to torment me?
“You fainted,” Stella said, and then suddenly her eyes filled with tears.
“I just got back from vacation yesterday. I wanted to surprise you, but when I didn’t see you in class, I asked around and they said you went to the toilet. So I went there, and I heard you scream. The next thing I saw was Evan carrying you in his arms and running. You were unconscious. I saw Melissa there too… I understood what happened.” Her voice broke. “It’s all my fault, Anna. If only I was there, those bitches wouldn’t have done that to you.”
I quickly shook my head.
“Stella, it’s not your fault. Those girls are just naturally wicked. Besides, I’m fine now, aren’t I?” I said, raising my hands a little to show her I was okay.
I sighed.
“If anything, I’m the one to blame for being weak.”
Stella scoffed immediately.
“Weak or not, anyone who touches my best friend will have to fight me first,” she said, her brown eyes flashing with determination.
“Touching,” someone chuckled from the door.
We all turned.
Evan was standing there, leaning lazily against the door like he owned the hospital.
My heart skipped. Just once. I pretended not to notice.
Stella immediately stood up in front of me like a bodyguard, and Charles straightened like he was ready to fight.
“What are you doing here?” Stella snapped angrily.
“Stella,” I called weakly. I didn’t want her getting into trouble because of me again.
Evan shrugged lazily.
“Same reason you are here.”
“I’m here because she’s hurt and I’m her best friend,” Stella snapped.
Evan smirked.
“Well, I’m here because I’m her tormentor.”
“You bastard,” Charles growled, stepping forward, but I quickly grabbed his hand.
“Please,” I whispered. I didn’t want him getting hurt again because of me.
Evan’s eyes dropped to my hand holding Charles. For a brief moment, his smirk disappeared.
I quickly let go and looked at him.
“Thank you for saving me,” I said.
He raised an eyebrow.
“Why do you think I saved you?” he asked coldly.
“Stella told me,” I replied quietly. I didn’t mention that I saw him before I passed out.
He sighed and ran his hand through his hair like he was tired.
“Well, unfortunately, you’re in more trouble than you can handle,” he said.
I frowned.
“Why?”
He looked at me seriously.
“You know why, Anna.”
His eyes were intense, like he was trying to read my soul.
“What exactly happened in that toilet?” he asked.
“I… I don’t know,” I stuttered.
I remembered feeling angry. Very angry. Then the strange energy. Then the scream. Then everything breaking.
Stella stepped forward, fury written all over her face.
“Evan Scott, I don’t care who the hell you are, but you don’t get to blame my best friend for an incident that nearly killed her!” Stella yelled.
Evan glared at her, and suddenly his eyes flashed a bright blue. The air in the room felt heavy, like something was pressing down on us.
“Stop!” I shouted quickly. “I’ll talk. I’ll talk.”
Evan looked back at me.
I swallowed and told them everything I remembered. After I finished, Stella looked even angrier than before.
“Those bitches!” she hissed.
“Do you feel anything new?” Evan asked me.
I paused and thought about it.
Other than my head feeling lighter and my body feeling strangely stronger, I didn’t feel anything different.
I shook my head.
“No.”
Evan frowned.
“Try wolfing out,” he said.
I tried. I closed my eyes, focused, tried to feel something, anything.
Nothing happened.
Evan frowned deeper.
“Try again.”
I tried again. Still nothing.
“I can’t feel my wolf,” I said quietly.
Evan looked confused.
“That’s impossible. I saw the video footage myself,” he muttered.
I sighed.
“Maybe I’m just a normal human and not a werewolf. Maybe that light and everything was just a coincidence.”
“There’s nothing like coincidence, little kitten,” Evan said immediately. “You felt it that day. You knew it was you.”
I swallowed. My heart started beating fast.
If I really had power…
Did that mean I wouldn’t be bullied again?
“Are you sure you can’t wolf out?” Evan asked again.
I shook my head.
He sighed again and ran his hand through his hair.
“That makes things harder.”
“What makes what harder?” I asked.
“Melissa comes from an ancient and powerful wolf family. Her father is a commander in the wolf army, and her grandfather was once the old Alpha’s Beta,” Evan explained.
I didn’t like where this conversation was going.
“So?” Stella stepped forward immediately. “So what if her grandfather was important? My great-grandfather was important too, and so was my grandfather. If she wants to compare family power, we can compare.”
Charles shook his head.
“I’m afraid it’s not that simple,” he said.
Evan looked at him and smirked.
“Who gave you a brain?”
Charles ignored him and continued.
“You can compare with Melissa, but what about Cynthia? What about Ella? Even if your family is powerful, you can only face one. What happens when they all join together?”
I frowned.
“So what if their families are rich and powerful? They were the ones who bullied me first. I was just trying to save myself.”
“That’s not how it works, little kitten,” Evan said calmly. “In the wolf pack, the strong prey on the weak. But I’ve never seen a wolf like yours. Bringing down a room like that? My dad thinks you might be something special. So you might still have a chance.”
I clenched my fists.
“And what if I’m not special?” I asked quietly.
“Then it will be bad,” Evan said bluntly. “Between you and his loyal commanders, my dad will choose them. He will never offend his trusted officials just because of you.”
His words were harsh, but I knew they were true.
I suddenly felt very small.
Hopeless.
Then something hit me.
Just a few weeks ago, I was just a bullied human girl.
Now… I was something else. Maybe powerful. Maybe weak. But not just human anymore.
I had always admired Stella’s courage and fierceness.
Would I become strong like her?
Or would my life just become even worse?
“My dad’s guards will be here soon,” Evan said, straightening up. “So it’s either you go with me… or you go with them. Choose one, kitten.”
I clenched my fists tightly.
My life had changed so suddenly. I never expected something like this when I resumed school last week.
But maybe… just maybe…
My life could become better.
I looked up at him.
“Let’s go,” I said firmly.
