Queen Mira-
I had been told the fables of this sacred land as a child. As it is, Native American soil and all the different species derive from here. All the ancestors can date their lineage back to the tribes that resided here. But to experience the energy firsthand is like nothing I have ever felt. I’m instantly drawn to these people and this land.
I have scoured the North American lands in search of my new coven. A place to begin again for my people. Cleansing us of our past atrocities and letting us start anew. The underworld had grown polluted with tourists thanks to all the movies and books. I had to make things right. I was the new Queen ready to rule. Behind me was the clergy who were elders that oversaw all. Well, all dealing with vampires, that is. They would step in if decisions were needed. Their purpose was to make sure one being did not monopolize all the power. After the mess my mother left behind, they were constantly watching my moves.
I have seen land in upstate New York and Toronto Canada. But my spirit told me this area of the Republic of California was calling me. I plan to meet with Alpha Ronan to discuss options for available property near their sacred land.
“Gerald, we have to make this happen. No mistakes. I refuse to return to Transylvania.” I speak to my liaison who always travels with me.
“Agreed my Queen, we must broker this deal with Alpha Ronan and the Black River Pack. The other locations would fit us fine, but I know the elders would love to have a new home base in the Republic of California. It is the most forward-moving country there is. Our people could really flourish here and end the stigma of bad vampires.” Gerald replies, taking notes as always.
“I agree, Gerald. That is why this has to go perfectly. My gown is in the pack’s traditional red color. I’m bearing gifts. I’m offering top dollar to buy land here. Plus, the fact that the previous Alpha Malcolm was good friends with my father should help us. As long as they don’t share the same level of contempt for my mother as I do.” I exhale, sitting back against the seat cushions of the black SUV we are being brought here in.
“We should not speak ill of the dead, your highness.” Gerald reminds me.
“Yes, well, the dead spoke ill of me. So let me have my moment.” I look to Gerald with a warning look. He nods.
Six years ago (Mira age 19)
The vampire war has been raging on for years now. Our Transylvanian coven had lost thousands of great fighters. Bodies tossed aside in the barren fields by our enemies. Snow covered with red blood could be seen for miles. Still, the war of the vampires raged on.
Lord Vampire Odisian, leader of the Western fighters, challenged the clergy and the queen. The queen was my mother. He once worked as her close ally. They both wanted to dominate all other species. All the time, he had his own plan in motion to take over the throne for himself. He had been building a secret army in the shadows. Recruiting men and women and turning them. Making them sired to him.
My mother, leading the fight on our side, kept being challenged. She couldn’t figure out who she could trust, so she eventually trusted no one. Not even me. Her own child. For every win, we lost just as many. Everyone was thirsty for power. The scent of a title and ruler of all vampires had many attempts an uprisal. All that tried my mother killed. She was ruthless. She would rather kill your entire family than question your loyalty.
Against the wishes of the clergy, my mother refused to stop her war. The clergy had forced her to attend another meeting in the grand hall to speak on an end to the war. As always, I was being forced alongside her. She had been training me since I was born. To take over and show no mercy.
“Queen Arima, the war is not going in your favor. We have lost more troops. Our land is being claimed by Odisian. You are not showing the capabilities to run this coven.” I hear one of the elders speak from their high throne. The clergy has seven elders in total.
“I risk my life every day for this land. For these people. I am the Queen. The rightful queen. I am well aware of what I must do, and I will win. No one will take my power away from me!” My mother argues back in a calming tone. My mom would always tell me… ‘Never raise your voice Mira unless you plan to end someone so they can never tell you raised your voice'
“You need to think of your people. Of your own legacy. We believe it is time to put this matter into a vote. We, the clergy, have a plan to help us remain in some kind of power. You must meet with Obsidian and speak of a truce.” Elder Decan states. A gleam of happiness in his eyes. He has always hated our family in power.
“Obsidian would no sooner take a truce than pillage every man, woman, and child for his own coven.” My mom argues without emotion. They frown upon a woman showing this. When a man does it, it is valiant.
“You have lost control, Amira!” Elder James bellows.
“You will address me as your Queen. Do not get too comfortable with my name.” Mom challenges back. Elder James is fuming. He hates anyone to challenge him.
“Very well. What is your plan.” He waves his fingers in disregard of her title.
“I will slay whoever tries to stand between myself and my victory. Heed my warning. No matter who you send. I will kill them and drain their blood on this very pedestal.” My mom states, and I truly believe her.
“Are you making a threat against the coven?” Elder Robert questions standing from his chair.
“I am telling you facts. Nothing will keep me from my destiny. You think you can run this underworld without me!” Mom demands banging her hands on the podium. She looks at me with an evil smile. “You don’t deserve your seats. You worthless imbeciles! Even my trusted seers have seen your demise.”
“Guards, detain her!” Elder Robert yells. In a blink of an eye, my mother uses her vamp speed and slits the throat of Elder Robert. His head rolls to his feet. Everyone runs. As she attacks every member of the clergy. She fights off three warriors, gutting them with ease. Their organs fall from their chest cavities. The clergy is clearing the great hall running for their lives. Her fighters beside her jump into action. I am frozen. I can't move. It's like I’m watching a movie. I’m speechless at the c*****e before me in our sacred halls. The doors are barricaded as I hear the warriors outside trying to get in. Blood is everywhere as she takes out the clergy with little to no help. I am being held back by two of the warriors. The room is starting to quiet down. My mother walks up to me with distaste.
“Look at you. You claim to be my heir? I have slaughtered thousands, and you stand here being held back by my own men! You are a pitiful excuse for my legacy.” My mother slaps me across my face. “I just handed you a war, and you did nothing!”
“Mom! What did you do?” I try and break free from the men holding me. I see now she had the guards in her pocket on both sides. Blood covers the floors. Bodies lie in pieces. I’m so confused. Everyone around me is dead, and my mother is to blame.
“I did what needed to be done to save our lineage. While you stood by doing nothing. At least I still have your sister. Maybe I can mold her into the warrior you never will become.” She tsks at me.
“What do you want us to do with her, my queen?” I struggle to break free. Tears welled in my eyes. But I fight them. She hates emotions of any sort.
“Throw her into the waterfalls. See if she can make something of herself.” My mother walks up to me gripping my face. Then she pulls a knife from behind her and stabs me in the stomach. The silver blade burns. I scream from the pain as she removes the weapon and waves me off. I can’t focus. All I see is blood. Covering my once-white gown. My blood mixes with the others on the floor of the great hall. My head is too heavy to hold up. Her men drag me out of the castle and over the edge into the raging waterfall. All I can hear is the roaring water. All I can see are my feet as I’m too weak to lift my head. The loss of blood is getting to me. Then I am tossed over. Falling. The ice-cold water shocks me next and soothes me at the same time. It’s the last thing I remember before it all goes to black.
