I had no interest in wasting more time on them.
I led Zayden over to a wedding gown on display. "This one was designed by Master Elton Callahan. What do you think? Your suit would match it perfectly too."
Before Zayden could reply, Liam rushed over and blocked the gown from view, his face twisted with disbelief. "What wedding? Are you actually serious about marrying this neighborhood security guard?" he snarled.
I ignored him, but Liam quickly jumped to his own conclusion, speaking again. "No, that can't be right. You've always loved me... how could you suddenly take an interest in someone else? You've changed your mind, haven't you? You're just too proud to say it, so you came here hoping I'd give you another chance."
I couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous he sounded. It was amazing to see someone so ordinary, yet so full of themselves.
But Liam mistook my amusement for an opening to accept his terms.
He raised his chin haughtily. "If you'd just admit it, we've known each other long enough. I suppose I could still let you be my mistress. But naturally, your status will always be below Gwyneth's. Let her try this gown on first. If it doesn't suit her, I'll think about letting you have it."
My expression hardened slowly.
Seeing this, Gwyneth spoke up in a soft, fragile tone. "Please don't fight over it. You've always been so determined... you never let anyone else touch what you like. It's been that way for as long as I can remember. You picked this one first, and I do like it very much. But if you want it, you should have it."
Her feigned weakness only made Liam more biased toward her.
"Once we're married, I'll buy you every beautiful thing in the world," he told her. "If you love this gown, I'll make Yvonne give it to you."
The two of them putting on such an act right in front of me was absolutely revolting.
"You think you're worthy of taking something I want?" I said coldly.
Gwyneth flinched like a frightened little creature and stepped behind Liam, tears welling up in her eyes but not quite falling, perfectly pitiful.
Liam looked at her with pure sympathy, as if I had vanished entirely.
He pulled out his black credit card and told her to pick whatever she liked, then followed the sales assistant to the front desk to verify his account.
The moment they were out of earshot, Gwyneth dropped her innocent act and sneered. "You love watching him spoil me, don't you? The man who once adored you now loves your own sister. You must feel like such a failure." She covered her mouth and giggled, her eyes gleaming with mockery. "Come back and be his mistress, and maybe if I'm in a good mood, I'll let him visit you sometimes. You can spend your days waiting for whatever scraps I decide to give you..."
Before she could finish, I grabbed a nearby veil and stuffed it straight into her mouth, silencing her cruel words.
"Yvonne! How dare you?" Gwyneth pulled the veil out, her face contorted with rage as she lifted her hand to strike me.
But just before her palm could land, a strong hand caught her wrist.
It was Zayden.
"Thank you," I said, giving him a soft nod.
Zayden looked calm as he met my eyes. "I'm your husband. It's my duty."
Liam heard every word as he walked back over. He handed his card to the assistant, then gestured sharply at us. "Get these two out of here. I've spent a fortune on this store, surely I have that much, right?"
The assistant was just an ordinary employee, caught helplessly in the middle.
When the assistant hesitated, Liam waved his card again. "I just bought thousands of dollars' worth of goods here. You know whose business matters more, don't you?"
Finally, the assistant stepped toward us. "I'm sorry, but you'll need to leave."
"I have every right to shop here just like anyone else," I said. "Why should we be the ones to go?"
Liam scoffed. "Because you married a security guard. Even if he worked for eight lifetimes, he'd never earn as much as the watch on my wrist. Get them out before they ruin the atmosphere."
The assistant had no choice but to gesture for us to leave again.
Just then, the store manager hurried over.
After glancing briefly at me and Zayden, the manager walked straight past us to face Liam and Gwyneth.
Liam's face lit up with smug satisfaction, until the manager spoke in a cold, firm voice. "I'm sorry, but our owner has instructed us. You two are not welcome here. Please leave immediately."
