Isaac walked down the hallway with his eyes still red and his hands still shaking. The fire alarm screamed above him, red lights flashed on the walls, and people ran past him in a panic, covering their ears and pushing through the doors. He did not run. He walked slow and steady toward the back of the building, toward the door that said "LAB" in small black letters.
He pushed it open.
The lab was small and white, with counters and microscopes and rows of small glass tubes. The doctor was standing at the far end, her back to him, her grey hair pulled back in a tight bun. She was holding a small plastic container in her hand, turning it over in the light.
She heard the door and turned around. Her eyes went wide when she saw him.
"You," she said.
