Nicolo's POV
I watched my mother's paled face. I took her hand, the one without the IV. I held it tightly and caressed her face. I uttered a silent prayer, asking God for a positive result in her tests. When I was preparing to go home, I received a call from this hospital stating that there was an emergency. It was a good a thing that one of her friends saw her suddenly collapsed and brought her here. I moved when a nurse came in to check on her. I cannot calm myself down, when someone gave a warning knock on the door before opening it.
I was taken aback when I saw Sharry entered the room. This, girl.
"How's my mother?"
The nurse looked at me with an irritated look before she smiled at me sweetly. Ah, flirt, I thought harshly.
"Excuse me miss, but we are waiting for your answer. Will you stop looking at my boyfriend?" Sharry interrupted her corrupted mind. The nurse's smile disappeared because of embarrassment before I heard her little voice.
"We still have to wait for the results, Sir. It will be available any moment by now. I'm sorry. Excuse me." She walked towards the door in a hurry. I sighed.
I saw Sharry looking at my mother teary eyed. I blinked multiple times to make sure of what I saw. Then I saw pity before I saw hope in them. I was moved. She turned to me then gave me an assuring smile. I was about to return her smile when I remembered what he said to the nurse earlier. I gave her a disgusted look, instead. Her smile faded for a moment but then she grinned.
"What are you doing here, Sharry Faith Gascon?" I asked her in a monotone.
"I was worried that was why I followed you here. I'm sorry if I barge in without your permission." I heard her answered in a soft voice.
She sat on the chair without my invitation. She just smirked at me when she saw me looking at her. I shook my head giving her a disapproving look. She just pouted her lips then turned on the TV.
Sharry Faith Gascon is beautiful. There is no question about it. She has a pair of pitch black eyes with long lashes, a small pointed nose and a pouty lips all in a heart shaped face with a long dark and wavy hair. She is more taller than the girls around herbut she is short compared to me. She stood 5'6 tall but I stood 6". But her personality, I hate it. I hate it when she is chasing after me like she is easy. I hate her friendliness and her sly attitude.
But today, I admire her concern for my mother. They have known each other for years, we arent neighbors but she is very vocal with her feelings towards me since high school. I dont understand how my mother came to like her when I hated her.
My thoughts were interrupted when the Doctor came in.
"Good evening, I am Dr. Gerald Galvez. How are you related to the patient?"
"Good evening, I am her son, Doc." I answered formally.
"I have some bad news Mister."
I looked at him, my heart beating fast.
"Just tell me what is wrong with my mother Doc." I answered impatiently.
"Alright then, your mother has Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, a cancer that-"
"Cancer?" I asked confused. My heart started to constrict in pain.
"Yes, and it is progressing quickly and it could be fatal within a few months. She needs to undergo treatment like chemotherapy right away to stop the cancer cells from spreading more." He answered sadly.
I could only look at him. Still in shock. His phone rang.
"Excuse me but there is an emergency. I will be back to discuss more about your mother's situation and what can be done." He said in a hurry before exiting.
I feel so drained. I sat on the chair beside the bed looking at my mother. I calculated my money. I want to give her the best treatment possible. Someone tapped on my shoulder. I only remembered Sharry when I looked at her sympathetic face.
"I can help you. I have savings." She said worrying.
"Thanks but no, I will find a way to fund her treatment. This is beyond you anymore." I said in a low tone. I appreciate her concern. Whether I admit it or not, her presence somehow gave me a slight comfort in this hard time.
I momentarily calculated my money again. I cursed silently when I realized that even if I double time or take an additional job. It wont be enough.
"You need to go home so that you can get some important things. For your mother and for you. Dont worry about your mother, I will take care of her. I will call you right away if there is any problem. I will go home when you come back." Her voice was filled with assurance.
I nodded in agreement though a part of me didnt want to leave but I know that I have to. I have to take care of some things and I was glad someone was here to help me out for a moment.
"I'll be right back. Call me when something happens or if she wakes up." I told her. She just nodded in response.
I caressed my mother's face and kissed her forehead. I'll be back, Mama. I thought silently. I walked towards the door, I once again glanced at my mother then nodded at Sharry before shutting the door.
When I opened the door of our house, a lump formed on my throat then I cried.
"Why God? Why? She has been through a lot already! You could have chosen me to suffer instead of her. I am more than willing! Why give her that? Why? Ahhh!" I shouted in frustration and pain. I cried a lot more when my phone beeped because of a message. I cursed when my momentum was disturbed.
Aunt Carmela is awake. She is looking for you.
I hurried when I read it. No time for my drama anymore.
I opened the door of her hospital room and saw my mother smiling faintly at the woman next to her. I sighed in relief and I hugged her tightly.
"Excuse me but I need to go home. Call me if you need any help, I'll be more than happy to lend a hand. Bye Tita Carmela, I will come visit soon. As soon as tomorrow. I'll just give you two privacy to talk." Sharry looked at me and winked. I shifted on my track because of discomfort and was it protest?
Maybe, because she's at it again.
She was opening the door when I called her.
"Sharry, thank you." I sincerely said.
Her eyes twinkled then smiled again before waving goodbye and left. I was dumbfounded for I dont know what.
"Son." My mother's weak voice called.
