Four years before the handcuffs, before the warehouse, and before the betrayal, Maya was a ghost in a loud world.
She was ordinary, quiet, and perfectly content with it. Her life revolved around a strict, predictable routine: waking up early, riding the cramped subway, and spending nine hours a day burying her face in spreadsheets as a secretary for a small logistics firm. Although it barely kept her afloat, but it kept her safe and out of trouble.
The underworld didn't exist in Maya's world. Until the night of her twenty-second birthday.
"Come on, Maya! Just one night! You're turning twenty-two, not ninety-two!"
Her only friend, Chloe, had practically dragged her out of her apartment, forcing her to wear a simple black dress that felt far too tight for Maya’s liking. Chloe was the exact opposite of Maya, loud, vibrant, and determined to celebrate. In fact, Chloe had actively saved up three months worth of her salary just to secure their passage into the venue tonight, a sacrifice that made Maya feel too guilty to refuse, even though she felt entirely out of place.
Which was exactly how Maya found herself standing near the chaotic main bar of Noir, the most exclusive, expensive nightclub in the upper district.
The music loudly blasted out of the speakers with a lot of sweaty persons moving to the rhythm of the music as the Dj played the night away…well, just as she imagined. She adjusted her glasses trying to enjoy the night which even sounded like a ridiculous joke to her ears. Being honest to herself, she knew she hated being in extremely crowded places.
Chloe was a direct contrast to whatever it was Maya was feeling, already moving to the rhythm, determined to get every penny's worth of the money she'd spent in getting them here. Maya feeling uninterested quietly sat by the bar section nursing a single glass of wine. She checked her watch every now and then constantly reminding herself how much of a bad idea this was. She had a grueling morning shift in exactly six hours, and despite Chloe's incredible generosity, she was already counting down the minutes until she could escape back to her quiet apartment.
The heavy energy of the club suddenly shifted. It wasn't a gradual fade but rather an instant, suffocating hush that rippled through the venue. The music kept playing, but the loud chatter died instantly. The security guards at the main entrance threw their shoulders back, dropping their heads in deep, terrified respect.
A small entourage of men walked into the room.
At the center of them was Dave.
He didn't just enter a room; he took the spotlight without even trying. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair pushed back sharply, his face a cold, unbending mask. To the syndicates, he was the sole heir, the detached, indifferent, and utterly ruthless future boss of the city's most feared mafia empire. He was a man revered by allies, hunted by enemies, and seemingly completely untouchable.
Immediately, every eye in the club glued to him. Women adjusted their dresses, desperate to catch a stray glance, and wealthy patrons scrambled to make way. Chloe instantly froze, clutching Maya’s arm tightly as she gushed under her breath, "Oh my god, Maya, look... do you know who that is?"
Dave didn't spare the crowd a single look. Flanked by his personal guards and his cousin Ken, he walked straight past the common floor, heading up the private stairs toward the heavily guarded, expensive VIP booth reserved exclusively for his family.
Sitting down in the plush leather booth, Dave leaned back, his dark, calculating eyes casually sweeping over the sea of people below. He was used to the staring, the fear, and the desperate fawning. Everyone down there was fighting for his attention.
Except one girl… one four eyed girl standing near the bar.
From his booth Dave’s gaze locked onto Maya, and his eyes narrowed.
He watched as Chloe tried to pull her toward the dance floor, but Maya remained entirely indifferent. She wasn't looking at him, wasn’t bothered by his presence nor any of the things happening in and around the club, she wasn't even looking at the dance floor. Her body language radiated pure nonchalance, her eyes scanning the exits with a bored, exhausted expression that made it glaringly obvious she wanted to be anywhere else but here.
Her total indifference caught him completely off guard.
Leaning forward, his intense gaze locked onto her, tracing every single detail. Under the pulsing club lights, her fair skin looked strikingly soft and natural, completely untouched by the heavy, painted makeup of the women currently trying to get into his VIP section. She wore barely anything on her face, and those delicate glasses resting on her nose made her look profoundly innocent, like a sheltered librarian trapped in a wolf's den. Her simple black dress did nothing to hide her tall, slender legs, which instantly drew his full attention.
She was a complete contradiction to the dark and violent world he ruled. And Dave found himself utterly unable to look away.
"Well, well. Look who's actually paying attention to the crowd for once," a cheerful, smooth voice broke his concentration.
Ken stepped into the booth, a bright, easygoing smile plastered across his handsome face. Ken was the absolute sweetheart, charming, approachable, and always floating around a rotating crowd of laughing girls, a stark contrast to the unapproachable Dave.
Following Dave's intense, unblinking gaze down to the regular floor, Ken's eyes landed right on Maya. He let out a low, amused whistle, nudging Dave's shoulder. "No way…The ‘Dave’ is actually staring at a girl? And she's wearing... are those reading glasses in a nightclub? She’s definitely not your usual type, cousin."
Dave didn't answer. His expression didn't change, but his eyes never left Maya as she subtly checked her watch again down by the bar.
Ken chuckled, raising his glass in Maya's direction. "Well, she looks bored out of her mind, and you look like a hawk hunting prey. Good luck freezing her out with that glare." With a playful wink, Ken turned back to the crowd of girls waving at him from the next table, sliding back into his carefree social butterfly routine.
But Dave wasn't planning on glaring from a distance anymore.
He set his drink down on the table, smoothed the front of his tailored jacket, and stood up. His guards instantly stepped forward, ready to flank him, but Dave held up a single hand, stopping them in their tracks.
"Stay here," Dave commanded, his voice low and cutting through the heavy bass of the club. "I'll handle this alone."
