The car slowed down, weaving through the chaotic streets of Delhi. Ananya Menon sat quietly in the back seat, gripping her bag tightly. Her parents, father and mother, and her elder brother were talking animatedly, but she could barely focus on their words. The city was alive with noise—the honking, the chatter, the smell of food stalls, and the endless stream of people. Her father gave her a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry, mole (daughter). You’ll settle in soon.” Her mother reached over and adjusted her dupatta. “Yes, focus on your studies and remember to take care of yourself.” Her elder brother, teasing as usual, added, “Don’t let the hostel life scare you. And remember, you have us to fall back on.” Ananya laughed nervously. “I’ll know” When they reached the hostel, Ananya’s eyes widened. The building was massive, neat, and buzzing with students moving in and out. Two security guards stood at the gate, and a couple of senior students helped new arrivals carry luggage. “Wow… it’s huge,” Ananya whispered to herself as she stepped out of the car. Her father helped her with her bags. “Here, let me help you. We’ll make sure you settle in quickly.” Her mother nodded. “Remember, Ananya, you are responsible for yourself now. Be careful with your belongings.” The driver unloaded the trunk while her father made a few questions with the hostel staff. After ensuring she settled in safely, her parents and brother waved goodbye, leaving Ananya standing at the hostel entrance, feeling a strange mix of excitement and nervousness.and after a few hugs, her family waved goodbye. Inside the hostel room, the air smelled of fresh paint and cleaning polish. she was greeted by three girls. “Hi! You must be Ananya, right? I’m Riya! First-year too,” said the cheerful one, bouncing slightly in excitement. “I’m Sanya,” said the quieter girl, smiling warmly. “Welcome! Don’t worry, we’ll help you settle in.” The third girl, Charlotte, leaned casually against the wall, arms crossed, looking Ananya up and down. “Let’s see if you survive Delhi,” she said dryly, scrolling on her phone. Ananya smiled politely. Two friendly, one… a little intimidating. After introductions, they gave her a quick tour of the room. Four single beds, a study table, a wardrobe—and chaos of luggage on the floor. “Let’s unpack first!” Riya said enthusiastically. Sanya nodded. “Yeah, we’ll make it cozy for all of us.” Charlotte smirked. “Just don’t mess up my side of the room.” Unpacking took a while. Clothes, books, toiletries—all had to find their place. Riya was hyper and chaotic, Sanya methodical and neat, and Charlotte… well, Charlotte just observed. Once done, the three girls explored the hostel together. They checked out the common areas, the library, and finally, the canteen. The smell of food made Ananya’s stomach growl, and soon they were seated at a table, eating dinner, chatting and laughing. By the time she returned to the room, Ananya was tired but happy. She unpacked a few remaining things, freshened up, and changed into comfortable clothes. Standing by the window, she gazed out at the campus. The sky above Delhi was slowly darkening, stars beginning to peek through. Her mind wandered—Tomorrow is my first day. What if I get lost? What if I can’t manage? But alongside the jitters, a tiny spark of thrill ran through her. New friends, new classes, new city… it all felt like the start of something bigger. She leaned against the window frame, letting the cool night breeze brush her face, and whispered softly to herself, “Alright… let’s see what Delhi has in store for me.” And somewhere, just beyond the city lights, she didn’t know it yet, someone was already watching the world quietly, powerful and distant, waiting for paths to cross.
