His mother was waiting in the living room when we got home. Margaret Cole, elegant, cold, holding a tablet.
"So, it is true," she said, looking at me with disgust. "You have a boyfriend. I warned Ethan about girls like you."
Ethan stepped in front of me. "Mother, those photos were fake. Victoria made them. I have proof."
"I am not talking about photos, Ethan. I am talking about this video."
She played the video. It showed me in a hospital, talking to a doctor. The doctor said, "Amara, your mother's surgery will cost 5 million naira. If you don't pay in 3 days, we have to stop treatment."
In the video, I was crying, saying, "I will do anything. I will marry anyone for money. Please save my mother."
My secret. My deepest shame. I married Ethan for money to save my mother. I never told him the full truth.
Ethan turned to me, his face unreadable.
"Is this true? You married me for money?"
Tears ran down my face. "Yes. My mother had kidney failure. I had no money. Your contract offered 10 million naira. I took it to save her life. I never lied about loving you later, but at first... at first it was for her."
The room was silent.
Margaret smiled triumphantly. "You see, Ethan? She is a gold digger. She admitted it. Divorce her. I will find you a proper wife."
I waited for Ethan to be cold again. To kick me out. To call me a liar.
But he did something no one expected. He took my hand.
"Mother, thank you for showing me this video. Now I finally understand why my wife is the strongest woman I ever met."
He turned to me. "You married a man you didn't love to save your mother? You sacrificed your life, your freedom, for her? Jennifer, that is not gold digging. That is love. Real love. The kind of love I never saw in this cold family."
Margaret was shocked. "Ethan, what are you saying?"
"I am saying I am proud of my wife. And I am saying you will apologize to her. Because without her, you would not have a daughter-in-law who knows what love means."
Then he looked at me, his eyes soft. "My mother had surgery three years ago too. My father refused to pay because it was expensive. I paid secretly. I know what it feels like to be desperate to save your mother. You never had to hide it from me."
I started crying hard. He hugged me.
Margaret stood up, her cold mask cracking. "I... I did not know your mother was sick, Jennifer."
"She is better now," I whispered. "Because of your son's money. I will pay him back every kobo. I promise."
"No," Ethan said. "You will not pay back. You will stay as my wife. And your mother will come live with us. I have already arranged a new hospital for her check ups."
Margaret walked to me slowly. For a second I thought she would slap me. Instead, she hugged me awkwardly.
"Welcome to the family, Jennifer Cole. You have more guts than any Lagos socialite I know. My son chose well."
That night, Ethan and I sat on the balcony.
"You are not angry I married you for money?" I asked.
"I married you for business. You married me for your mother. We both lied at first. But look at us now."
He pulled out a small box. Inside was a new ring. Not the cold contract ring, but a ring with a heart shaped diamond.
"Jennifer Cole, will you marry me again? Not for contract. Not for money. For love? For real this time?"
I cried and nodded. "Yes. Yes, my cold billionaire boss. Yes."
He slipped the ring on my finger and kissed me under the Lagos stars. The contract was finally over. The love story was just beginning.
