Morning came with a storm. Ethan's mother, Margaret Cole, arrived unannounced. She was elegant, cold, just like her son. And she hated me immediately. "So you're the girl who trapped my son?" she said, sipping tea while staring at me. "I didn't trap anyone, ma'am. We love each other," I lied, holding Ethan's hand. His hand was warm. Margaret smiled cruelly. "Love? Ethan doesn't love. He calculates. Tell me, Jennifer, what does my son like for breakfast? What's his favorite color? How did you two meet?" My mind went blank. We never discussed this. Ethan was about to speak, but I squeezed his hand. "He likes black coffee, no sugar, with a dash of cinnamon," I said, remembering the kitchen. "His favorite color is black, because he thinks colors are distracting. And we met at the charity gala last year. I spilled wine on his shirt. He was angry, but then he laughed. It was the first time I saw him laugh." Ethan stared at me, shocked. I was right. Margaret was silent, then stood up. "Interesting. Ethan, you never laugh." After she left, Ethan pushed me against the wall. "How did you know that?" he growled, but his eyes were burning. "I watch you," I whispered. "Even if you don't watch me." For a second, I thought he would kiss me. Instead, he let me go. "Good acting. My mother almost believed you." But as he walked away, I saw his fists clenched. He was affected.
