Ethan's ex-girlfriend, Victoria, showed up at the office. She was everything I'm not — blonde, tall, model, rich family.
She walked into his office like she owned it and kissed his cheek.
I was bringing him lunch — I started doing that, because his secretary said he never eats.
Victoria looked at me from head to toe. "And who is this? The new maid?"
"His wife," Ethan said calmly.
Victoria laughed. "Wife? Ethan, you can't be serious. You hate commitment. You told me marriage was a business trap."
Ethan stood up and wrapped his arm around my waist. "Things change."
I felt his body stiff. This was acting for Victoria. I knew it. But when his thumb rubbed my waist, my knees went weak.
Victoria's face turned red. "You'll regret this, Ethan. She will never belong in our world."
When she left, I tried to pull away, but Ethan held me tighter.
"You're shaking," he said.
"I'm not used to mean girls."
"You're my wife now. No one talks to you like that. Understand?"
His voice was so protective, so possessive. My heart did a stupid thing — it fluttered.
That night, he came to my room. "Victoria is gone. Don't worry."
"I'm not worried," I lied.
He touched my cheek. "You are a terrible liar, Jennifer Castillo."
And then he left. But his touch stayed.
