THE SIGNATURE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Sophia barely slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, she heard the doctor’s voice. “Three days.” Three days before her mother lost the chance to have the surgery. She turned over on the old mattress and stared at the ceiling. The contract lay on the small table beside her bed. She had read every single page. Twice. There were no hidden tricks. No unreasonable demands. Everything Damian had promised was written clearly. Her mother’s surgery. Her medical care. A monthly allowance. A private room at Blackwood Manor. Complete freedom after one year. It sounded almost too good to be true. Yet something inside her refused to accept it. Marriage wasn’t supposed to happen this way. She had once imagined falling in love. Meeting someone kind. Building a family together. Instead… She was preparing to marry a man she barely knew. Not because she loved him. But because life had left her no other choice. A soft cough came from the next room. Sophia quickly wiped the tears from her face before walking toward her mother’s bedroom. Grace was already awake. “You didn’t sleep, did you?” Sophia forced a smile. “I was reading.” Grace looked at her carefully. “You’re lying.” Sophia sat beside her and held her hand. “I just have a lot on my mind.” Grace gently brushed a strand of hair away from her daughter’s face. “You’ve been carrying this family on your shoulders for years.” “I’m tired of watching you struggle because of me.” “Mom…” Grace squeezed her hand. “If anything happens to me…” “Don’t.” Sophia’s voice trembled. “Please don’t say that.” Grace smiled sadly. “I only want you to promise me one thing.” “Promise me you’ll choose your own happiness someday.” Sophia lowered her head. If only her mother knew what she was about to do. She hugged Grace tightly. “I love you.” “I love you too.” Those words broke something inside her. An hour later… Sophia stood outside Blackwood Group once again. The contract rested inside her handbag. Her hands trembled. This was the last chance to turn around. She closed her eyes. Then walked inside. The receptionist immediately stood. “Good morning, Miss Carter.” Before she could answer, Ethan approached. His expression softened the moment he saw her face. “You’ve made your decision.” She nodded silently. Without another word, he led her toward the private elevator. The journey to the top floor felt longer than ever. When the elevator doors opened, Ethan stopped outside Damian’s office. “He’s inside.” Sophia took a deep breath. Then knocked once. “Come in.” She slowly opened the door. Damian was seated behind his desk, reviewing several documents. He looked up. Their eyes met. Neither of them spoke. Finally, Damian closed the file in front of him. “You came back.” Sophia nodded. “I did.” He stood. “Have you made your decision?” She reached into her handbag. Removed the contract. And placed it gently on his desk. “I read every page.” “And?” “I still hate this idea.” A faint smile crossed Damian’s face. “I assumed you would.” She looked directly into his eyes. “But my mother doesn’t have time.” The smile disappeared. Silence filled the room. Sophia slowly picked up the pen lying beside the contract. Her fingers tightened around it. She stared at the signature line. Once she signed… There would be no turning back. Her old life would end. A completely different one would begin. She hesitated. Damian noticed. “If you’re unsure…” “We can stop here.” Sophia looked up in surprise. “You’d let me walk away?” “I won’t force you.” She closed her eyes. The image of her mother lying in that hospital bed flashed through her mind. The doctor’s warning echoed once again. “Three days.” A single tear rolled down her cheek. “I’m sorry, Mom.” Then… With trembling hands… She signed her name. Sophia Carter. The sound of the pen leaving the paper felt louder than anything she had ever heard. She slowly pushed the contract toward Damian. He looked down at her signature. For a brief moment… Even he was silent. Then he picked up his pen. Signed beneath her name. And closed the file. “It is done.” Sophia lowered her eyes. “So…” “What happens now?” Damian pressed the intercom. “Ethan.” The door opened almost immediately. “Yes, sir.” “Arrange Miss Carter’s mother’s surgery.” “Today.” Ethan smiled. “Right away, sir.” Sophia’s head snapped up. “Today?” Damian nodded. “I keep my promises.” Tears filled her eyes. She had expected relief. Instead… She felt strangely empty. She had just saved her mother. But in doing so… She had given away a year of her own life. As Ethan left to make the arrangements, Damian walked toward the window. Without looking at her, he spoke quietly. “Welcome to Blackwood Manor…” “…Mrs. Blackwood.” Sophia closed her eyes. The words sounded so unreal. She had entered the building as Sophia Carter. She walked out… As Damian Blackwood’s contract wife.
