Chapter 4: Into the Wraith Woods

1988 Words
Evelyn lived in the outskirts of the city, in a small house surrounded by dense trees. It was a place that felt as though it existed outside of time, far removed from the chaos of the modern world. As Alexei approached her home, the rain began to let up, and the clouds parted just enough to allow a sliver of moonlight to shine through. He knocked on the door, waiting only a moment before it swung open. Evelyn stood in the doorway, her sharp green eyes studying him with the same intensity she always had. Her long, dark hair fell in waves over her shoulders, and her hands, adorned with silver rings, rested on her hips. "Alexei," she said, her voice calm but with a hint of curiosity. "I didn’t expect to see you tonight. What’s going on?" Without wasting time, Alexei stepped inside, wiping the rain from his face. "It’s bad, Evelyn. Dark magic is spreading through the city, and it’s coming from something old—something the Council doesn’t even fully understand." Evelyn’s expression darkened, and she motioned for him to follow her into the small sitting room. The room was warm, lit by the soft glow of candles scattered on shelves and tables. The air smelled faintly of herbs and incense, calming yet filled with an undertone of power. "What did the Council tell you?" she asked, sitting down in one of the armchairs by the fire. Alexei took the seat across from her, his body still tense from the events of the night. "They said it’s an ancient force, something that’s been locked away for centuries but is starting to awaken. There’s an artifact—a relic that can stop it—but it’s hidden in the Wraith Woods." Evelyn’s eyes widened slightly at the mention of the Wraith Woods. "You’re planning to go there?" "I don’t have a choice," Alexei replied. "If this power is released, it won’t just be the city that’s in danger. It’ll be the whole world." Evelyn leaned back in her chair, her gaze thoughtful. "The Wraith Woods is dangerous, even for someone like you. It’s not just the creatures that live there; the forest itself is alive with ancient magic. It warps reality, plays tricks on the mind. You could get lost forever." "I know the risks," Alexei said, his tone firm. "But I have to do this." For a moment, Evelyn was silent, her sharp gaze never leaving Alexei’s face. Then, with a sigh, she stood and crossed the room to one of the shelves. She pulled down an old, leather-bound book and flipped it open, her fingers moving quickly over the pages. "If you’re going into the Wraith Woods, you’ll need more than just your usual abilities," she said, scanning the book. "There are spells that can protect you, enchantments that will help you resist the magic of the forest. But even with them, it’s not a guarantee." Alexei watched her, grateful that she was willing to help despite the dangers. "I didn’t expect any guarantees. Just a fighting chance." Evelyn glanced up at him and gave a small, tight smile. "You always did like impossible odds." She returned to her seat, the book open on her lap, and began to speak softly, explaining the details of the enchantments she would prepare for him. As she spoke, Alexei listened intently, absorbing every word. He knew he was walking into the unknown, but with Evelyn’s help, he felt more prepared than he had before. When she finished, Evelyn closed the book with a snap and looked up at him, her expression serious. "I’ll need some time to get everything ready. You should rest while you can. Tomorrow will be the beginning of a long and dangerous journey." Alexei nodded, standing to leave. But before he reached the door, Evelyn’s voice stopped him. "Alexei," she called, her tone softer now. "Be careful. The Wraith Woods… it’s not just a place. It’s something alive, something that feeds on fear and uncertainty. Don’t let it consume you." He turned to face her, his amber eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. "I’ll come back, Evelyn. I always do." With that, he stepped out into the night, the rain finally beginning to ease. The moon was high now, casting its silver light over the city, illuminating the path ahead. The Wraith Woods waited for him, a place filled with forgotten magic and ancient danger. But Alexei was ready. The world was on the brink of destruction, and he was the only one who could stop it. As he disappeared into the shadows, his heart raced with the anticipation of what was to come. The battle was far from over, and the true test of his strength had yet to begin. The sun was barely peeking over the horizon when Alexei set out, the weight of his mission heavy on his shoulders. The night had been long, and sleep had come sparingly. His mind kept turning over the warnings Evelyn had given him, along with the Council’s cryptic messages about the ancient force that awaited him in the Wraith Woods. But he had no room for doubt. There was only one path now, and it led into the heart of a forgotten place. The outskirts of the city quickly gave way to dense forests, but they were nothing like the Wraith Woods that lay beyond. As Alexei traveled, the terrain grew wilder, less tamed by human hands. Towering trees stretched toward the sky, their twisted branches creating an eerie canopy above him, blocking out most of the morning light. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth, and the sounds of civilization had long faded into silence, replaced by the occasional rustle of leaves or the distant call of a bird. Alexei moved swiftly and silently, his senses heightened by his werewolf nature. Every movement around him registered clearly in his mind, every shift in the wind or stir of the trees. He had learned long ago to trust his instincts, and now they were screaming at him to remain alert. The Wraith Woods were notorious for their ability to deceive travelers, twisting reality itself and leading the unwary into traps they couldn’t escape. He had to be smarter, faster, and more careful than ever before. It wasn’t long before the forest began to change. The trees grew darker, their bark covered in strange, twisting patterns that seemed to pulse with an unnatural energy. The air itself seemed to shift, becoming heavier, as if the very forest was alive, watching his every move. Alexei’s eyes narrowed as he took in the sights around him. This was it—the edge of the Wraith Woods. He stopped at the tree line, taking a deep breath and closing his eyes for a moment. His thoughts flickered back to Evelyn, to the enchantments she had given him. The protective spells she had woven around him hummed faintly, a comforting presence in the midst of the growing darkness. But even with them, he knew the dangers that awaited him. The Wraith Woods didn’t play by the rules of the natural world. Opening his eyes, Alexei stepped forward, crossing the invisible boundary between the ordinary forest and the Wraith Woods. Immediately, he could feel the difference. The magic here was thick, ancient, and oppressive. It clung to his skin like a second layer, making it harder to breathe, harder to think. The trees were twisted and gnarled, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers, and the ground beneath his feet felt soft, as if it might give way at any moment. But Alexei was no stranger to danger. He pressed on, his eyes scanning the woods for any sign of movement. The silence was almost unnatural, as if the forest itself was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen. Time seemed to blur as Alexei made his way deeper into the Wraith Woods. The light that filtered through the trees was dim and flickering, casting long, distorted shadows across the ground. It was disorienting, and more than once, Alexei had to stop and gather his bearings. The forest played tricks on the mind, warping reality in subtle ways, making it easy to lose track of time and direction. But Alexei was determined to stay focused. He couldn’t afford to get lost here. As he continued, he began to notice subtle signs that he wasn’t alone. A rustle in the bushes, a shadow that moved just a little too quickly, a flash of light in the corner of his vision. His hand moved instinctively to the hilt of his dagger, his senses on high alert. Whatever was out there, it was watching him. Suddenly, the forest around him erupted into motion. Dark shapes burst from the undergrowth, moving with terrifying speed and agility. They were unlike anything Alexei had ever seen—humanoid in form but twisted and distorted, their eyes glowing with a sickly green light. Their bodies were covered in black, leathery skin, and their fingers ended in sharp claws that glistened in the dim light. Alexei reacted instantly, drawing his dagger and dropping into a defensive stance. The creatures circled him, their movements quick and erratic, as if they were testing him, waiting for an opening. He could feel the dark magic radiating from them, and his instincts screamed at him to strike first. With a sudden burst of speed, one of the creatures lunged at him, its claws outstretched. Alexei dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding the attack, and slashed out with his dagger. The blade connected, cutting deep into the creature’s arm, and it let out a high-pitched screech of pain. But it didn’t back down. Instead, it moved faster, its movements becoming even more frenzied as it attacked again. Alexei fought with precision and speed, his dagger flashing in the dim light as he fended off the creatures’ attacks. They moved with a terrifying grace, their bodies twisting and contorting in ways that seemed impossible, but Alexei held his ground. He knew he couldn’t afford to let them overwhelm him. As he fought, the forest around him seemed to close in, the trees pressing closer, their branches reaching out like claws. The air was thick with the scent of rot and decay, and the ground beneath his feet felt unstable, as if it might give way at any moment. But Alexei didn’t falter. He was used to fighting in difficult conditions, and his years of experience had taught him how to stay calm under pressure. Finally, after what felt like hours of fighting, Alexei managed to land a fatal blow on the last of the creatures. It let out a gurgling screech as it collapsed to the ground, its body twitching before going still. Alexei stood over the creature, his chest heaving, his dagger slick with dark blood. The Wraith Woods fell silent once more, the only sound the faint rustling of the wind through the trees. Alexei wiped the blood from his dagger and took a moment to catch his breath. The fight had been brutal, but he had survived. He had known the Wraith Woods would be dangerous, but even he hadn’t expected to encounter creatures like these so soon. As he stood there, his senses on high alert, he couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. The dark magic that permeated the Wraith Woods was ancient and powerful, and the creatures he had just fought were likely only a small part of the dangers that awaited him. He couldn’t afford to slow down. The artifact was still out there, somewhere in the heart of the forest, and if he didn’t find it soon, the consequences could be catastrophic. Taking one last deep breath, Alexei sheathed his dagger and continued forward, his eyes scanning the twisted trees for any sign of the artifact’s location.
