Chapter 5: A Step Too Close The music changed. It became softer Slower Couples moved to the center of the hall their steps matching the rhythm. Dresses flowed like wavesand soft laughter filled the air again. But not everyone was relaxed. Some eyes were still watching. Waiting. Duke Adrian Blackwood walked beside Lady Seraphina Vale. She moved with perfect grace her steps light, her smile gentle. Anyone looking at them would think they were the perfect pair. Beautiful Powerful Elegant “You seem quiet tonight Your Grace,” Seraphina said softly. Adrian did not look at her. “I am always quiet” She laughed lightly. “That is true” --- They walked slowly along the side of the hall. Servants bowed as they passed. Nobles stepped aside quickly. No one dared to interrupt them. Seraphina glanced at him carefully. “You don’t enjoy events like this, do you?” “No” “Then why come?” Adrian’s answer was simple. “The Crown Prince asked” Seraphina’s smile did not change. But her eyes flickered slightly. “I see” She already knew that. But hearing it made something inside her tighten. “Still,” she continued gently “I am glad you came.” Adrian did not reply. Silence followed. But Seraphina did not mind. She was patient. Very patient. Meanwhile… At the far end of the hall— Elara stood near a long table filled with drinks. She picked up a glass of water slowly. Not wine. Not anything strong. Just water. Her movements were calm. Careful She did not want attention. She did not want trouble. She only needed to stay for a while… And then leave. But something felt wrong. --- Her eyes moved slightly across the hall. She saw the nobles. The guards. The doors. She was thinking. Planning. Watching. “This place…” she thought quietly, “is too dangerous.” And then— Her gaze stopped. On him. The Duke. --- He was still with Lady Seraphina. Walking slowly. Talking. Elara quickly looked away again. --- “Why does it feel like…” she paused, “he noticed me?” She shook her head slightly. “No. That’s impossible.” --- But the feeling did not disappear. Across the hall— Crown Prince Lucien stepped closer to Adrian and Seraphina. “Am I interrupting?” he asked with a light smile. Seraphina bowed slightly. “Your Highness.” --- Adrian nodded. Lucien looked between them, amused. “You two look… comfortable" Adrian did not react. Seraphina smiled. “We were just talking.” Lucien chuckled. “About something interesting, I hope.” Seraphina replied softly, “Of course.” Lucien turned his attention to Adrian. “You haven’t danced yet.” “I won’t.” Lucien sighed. “You really make things difficult.” He looked around the hall. Then— His eyes found Elara again. --- A small smile appeared on his lips. “What about her?” he said suddenly. Adrian followed his gaze. There she was again. --- The red-haired woman. Standing quietly. Alone. --- Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly. --- “Do you know her?” Lucien asked. “No.” But his answer came a second too late. Lucien noticed. --- “That’s rare,” he said. “Someone you don’t know… yet you keep looking.” Adrian turned his gaze away. “You’re mistaken.” Lucien smiled. But he said nothing more. Seraphina noticed everything. Her fingers tightened slightly. --- “Who is she?” she thought. She followed their line of sight. And then— She saw Elara. Simple dress Quiet presence Nothing special Yet— The Duke had looked at her. More than once. Something cold moved through Seraphina’s chest. --- Back near the table— Elara placed her glass down. She could feel it. Eyes. Watching her. She did not look up immediately. --- Instead, she took a slow breath. “Stay calm,” she told herself. Then— She turned. --- And once again— Her eyes met his. Adrian was already looking. --- This time— Neither of them looked away immediately. --- The noise of the hall faded. The music became distant. --- For a brief moment— It felt like only the two of them existed. --- Adrian took a step forward. --- Lucien noticed. --- Seraphina noticed. --- Everyone near them noticed. “Your Grace?” Seraphina called softly. But Adrian did not stop. --- He walked forward. Slow. Steady. --- Toward her. --- Elara’s heart beat faster. --- “Why is he coming here?” she thought. --- She looked around quickly. There was nowhere to go without drawing attention. --- So she stayed. --- Calm on the outside. But inside— Her thoughts were racing. --- Adrian stopped in front of her. --- Up close... She looked even more different. --- No heavy jewelry. No fake smile. No hidden intention in her eyes. Just calm. Just quiet. --- “Who are you?” he asked. --- His voice was low. Direct. --- Elara looked at him. Steady. --- “Elara Vance” she replied softly. --- The name meant nothing to him. --- But the feeling— Still remained. --- “You’re not from a noble family,” Adrian said. --- It was not a question. --- Elara did not deny it. “No.” --- Silence. --- Around them, whispers started again. --- “Who is she…?” “The Duke is talking to her…” “I’ve never seen her before…” --- Seraphina watched from a distance. Her smile was still there. But her eyes— Were cold. --- Lucien folded his arms, watching with interest. --- Back between them— Adrian spoke again. --- “Then why are you here?” --- Elara did not hesitate. “I received an invitation.” --- Adrian’s gaze deepened slightly. --- “You shouldn’t be here,” he said. --- His tone was calm. But there was something else in it. --- A warning. --- Elara understood. --- But she did not step back. --- “I know,” she said quietly. --- For a moment— Adrian said nothing. --- Then— Something unexpected happened. --- He reached out his hand. --- “Come with me.” --- Gasps spread through the hall. --- Elara froze for a second. --- “What…?” --- Adrian’s eyes did not change. --- “Just a walk,” he said. --- Simple. Direct. --- But nothing about this moment was simple. --- Across the hall— Seraphina’s nails pressed into her palm. --- Her smile almost broke. --- Lucien raised an eyebrow. --- “Well…” he murmured. --- “This is new.” --- Back in front of Adrian— Elara looked at his hand. --- Then at his face. --- Calm. Cold. Unreadable. --- But something inside her whispered— Danger. --- And yet— Her hand moved. --- Slowly. --- Closer. --- Just as her fingers were about to touch his— --- A servant suddenly rushed in. --- “Your Highness!” he called out loudly. --- The entire hall turned. --- “The Emperor has arrived!” --- Everything froze. --- The moment broke. --- Elara quickly pulled her hand back. --- Adrian lowered his slowly. --- The doors opened. --- And the atmosphere changed once again. --- The night was far from over.
