CHAPTER 2: BEHIND THE WALL

960 Words
Dr. Olivia Carter arrived at Mercy General Hospital early in the morning, her limp barely noticeable to those who didn’t know her story. The security guards at the entrance greeted her with polite nods, which she returned with a tight smile. Olivia’s routine was as disciplined as her medical practice: arrive early, stay focused, and avoid personal distractions. As she passed the front desk, the nurses barely looked up, accustomed to her quiet efficiency. The staff meeting room buzzed with morning chatter when Olivia entered. Dr. Sarah Mitchell, her best friend and confidante, waved her over to an empty seat beside her. Dr. Mark Thompson and several other colleagues were already seated, exchanging stories from their previous night’s shifts. Olivia listened intently as Dr. Richard Evans, the Chief of Medicine, outlined the day's priorities. She jotted down notes, her mind already planning the most efficient route through her patient rounds. As the meeting concluded, Sarah tried to engage Olivia in small talk. “How was your weekend, Olivia?” Sarah asked, her tone light. “Productive,” Olivia replied, her eyes scanning the notes she had taken. “I managed to catch up on some research.” Sarah sighed but didn’t push further. Together, they embarked on their morning rounds, moving from one patient to another with practiced precision. Olivia’s professionalism shone through with each interaction, her demeanor calm and reassuring. But Sarah could see the wall Olivia had built around her heart, a barrier that seemed to grow stronger with each passing day. At the nurses’ station, Olivia consulted with Nurse Jenna Roberts about a particularly complex case. Jenna admired Olivia’s dedication but couldn’t help but voice her concern. “Dr. Carter, you’re always here so early and leave so late. Do you ever take a break?” Olivia glanced up from the chart she was reviewing. “Breaks are for when the work is done,” she said simply, returning to her notes. Sarah persuaded Olivia to join her for lunch in the hospital cafeteria. Over salads, Sarah gently broached the subject that had been on her mind. “Olivia, you need to take care of yourself too. You can’t pour from an empty cup.” Olivia deflected, focusing on the work. “There’s just so much to do, Sarah. Our patients need us.” Before Sarah could push further, a Code Blue blared through the hospital’s speakers. Olivia and Sarah rushed to the emergency room where a young boy named Tommy had been brought in after a severe asthma attack. Olivia took charge, her medical prowess and calm under pressure evident as she coordinated the team to stabilize Tommy. After ensuring Tommy was out of immediate danger, Olivia collaborated with Dr. Mark Thompson to develop a treatment plan. Mark, ever the joker, attempted to lighten the mood. “You know, Olivia, you’re like a superhero around here. Do you ever take off the cape?” Olivia’s response was curt. “Let’s focus on the patient, Mark.” In the hallway, Sarah caught up with Olivia and insisted on a private conversation. They stepped into an empty consultation room where Sarah’s concern spilled over. “Olivia, I’m worried about you. You’re so dedicated, but you need to heal too.” Olivia brushed it off. “I’m fine, Sarah. Really. Work is what keeps me grounded.” The afternoon brought a scheduled consultation with Mrs. Harris, an elderly patient with chronic heart issues. Olivia’s demeanor was kind but detached, focusing strictly on the medical facts. Mrs. Harris thanked Olivia for her care, but Olivia barely registered the gratitude, her mind already on the next task. As she walked down the hallway, Olivia noticed a new patient being admitted. Alex Turner, a former soldier, caught her eye. His military demeanor and the mysterious nature of his condition piqued her curiosity. She observed the interaction between the admitting nurse and Alex, feeling a twinge of curiosity, but she didn’t engage. In the staff lounge, Olivia reviewed patient charts and updated records on her laptop. Sarah joined her, sharing a light-hearted story about her day in an attempt to connect. Olivia smiled politely but remained reserved, her mind always on her work. Evening rounds brought Olivia back to Tommy’s room. The boy was asleep, his parents at his bedside, their faces etched with worry. Olivia reassured them, her voice soft and comforting. “Tommy is in good hands. We’re doing everything we can.” Later, Olivia found herself in the hospital chapel, a place she rarely visited. She sat in the quiet space, her mind drifting to memories of her parents’ accident. The pain was still raw, even after all these years. She quickly pushed the thoughts away, focusing on her duties. As she prepared to leave the hospital, Dr. Richard Evans crossed her path. Richard praised Olivia for her hard work and dedication but subtly hinted that she should take care of herself as well. “You’re an incredible doctor, Olivia. Just remember to look after yourself too.” Olivia thanked him and headed to her car, the weight of the day settling on her shoulders. She arrived home to a quiet, empty apartment. Limping to her bedroom, she briefly looked at a framed photo of her parents before setting it down. She changed into comfortable clothes, made herself a simple dinner, and settled down with medical journals, her mind always on her work. As the night deepened, Olivia’s thoughts drifted back to Alex Turner. There was something about him that lingered in her mind. She shook her head, refocusing on the articles before her. There was no room for distractions, she reminded herself. But as she drifted to sleep, Alex’s image lingered, a seed of curiosity planted in her heart.
