CHAPTER 3: A World Too Bright

1134 Words
The morning came with soft light and steady nerves. Tessa stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the collar of the only blazer she owned. It wasn’t expensive — the seams had been restitched twice — but it looked neat. Respectable. She glanced once more at the Blake Holdings card sitting on her table. It gleamed faintly in the light, a quiet promise. “If you ever want something more,” Ariana had said. Something more. The words had echoed in Tessa’s head all night. After a long breath, she picked up her bag and stepped out into the busy streets of New Crest. The wind was cool, brushing against her cheeks like a whisper. As the tall glass building of Blake Holdings came into view, her steps slowed. It was beautiful — all steel, light, and quiet power. People in sharp suits walked briskly through the doors. Tessa hesitated before following them inside. At the reception, a woman in a sleek black dress greeted her with a polite smile. “Good morning. Do you have an appointment?” “I—uh—yes,” Tessa said quickly, fumbling for words. “I was asked to come by Miss… I mean, by Ariana Blake.” The woman’s expression shifted slightly at the name. “Of course. One moment, please.” She picked up the phone, spoke softly, then nodded. “Miss Blake will see you now. Top floor.” The elevator ride felt endless. Every floor number blinked like a heartbeat. Tessa’s palms were damp, her heart racing. When the doors finally opened, she stepped into a space that looked like another world — wide windows, white marble floors, and the faint scent of vanilla and coffee. Ariana stood by the window, hands in her pockets, looking like she’d stepped out of a magazine. When she turned, that calm, composed expression softened into a small smile. “You came,” Ariana said simply. Tessa nodded. “You said I should think about it. I did.” “And?” “I’d like to try.” For the first time that morning, Ariana’s smile reached her eyes. “Good. Come.” She led Tessa through the office, explaining as they walked. “You’ll assist with client events — organization, setup, small details. It’s not glamorous, but it’s a start.” “I don’t mind,” Tessa said. “I just… want to do something that matters.” Ariana glanced at her, something unreadable in her gaze. “Then you’re in the right place.” They stopped at a glass desk near the corner. “This will be your workspace. You’ll report to me directly for now.” Tessa blinked. “Directly? To you?” Ariana’s lips curved slightly. “Unless you’d rather not.” Tessa felt her cheeks warm. “No, I just… didn’t expect that.” “I like to see things done properly,” Ariana said, her tone even but her eyes amused. “And I think you’ll surprise me.” The first few days were a blur of names, files, and instructions. Tessa worked hard — maybe harder than she ever had before. Ariana rarely raised her voice, but her presence alone was enough to keep the whole office alert. She was confident, commanding, and frighteningly graceful. But every now and then, she’d glance across the room at Tessa, and something in her eyes would soften. One evening, when most of the staff had gone home, Tessa was still at her desk, sorting through a box of invitations. Ariana stepped out of her office, surprised to see her still there. “You’re still working?” Tessa looked up quickly. “Just wanted to finish these. They’re for tomorrow’s charity event, right?” Ariana nodded, walking closer. “Yes. But it could wait until morning.” “I don’t like leaving things halfway,” Tessa said with a small smile. Ariana studied her for a moment. “Neither do I.” Their eyes met across the soft light of the office. The city lights outside glimmered like tiny stars against the glass. “Have you eaten?” Ariana asked suddenly. Tessa blinked. “Um, not yet.” “Come with me.” Before she could protest, Ariana grabbed her coat and motioned toward the elevator. They ended up in a quiet rooftop restaurant overlooking the city. The view was breathtaking — soft music, candles, and a skyline painted in gold and blue. Tessa stared out the window. “I’ve never seen the city from this high before.” “You get used to it,” Ariana said, sitting across from her. “But sometimes I still stop and look. Reminds me what I’m working for.” “What are you working for?” Tessa asked. Ariana thought for a moment. “Control. Maybe peace. Maybe both.” Tessa smiled softly. “You don’t seem peaceful.” Ariana laughed lightly. “You notice everything, don’t you?” “I try.” The waiter came with wine and pasta. Conversation flowed easier after that — about music, dreams, and the strange ways life brought people together. Tessa talked about her small apartment and her love for late-night rain. Ariana listened, her expression softer than Tessa had ever seen. At one point, their hands brushed when reaching for the glass. Neither pulled away. For a second, the world outside the window disappeared — only the sound of their breathing and the faint hum of the city below remained. Then Ariana cleared her throat gently. “You should get some rest after dinner. Tomorrow will be busy.” Tessa nodded, breaking eye contact. “Right.” But even as they finished their meal in silence, the air between them felt different — heavier, alive. Back in her apartment later that night, Tessa lay awake staring at the ceiling. She could still hear Ariana’s calm voice, see the light in her eyes. You get used to it, she had said. But Tessa doubted anyone could ever get used to someone like her. She turned and looked at her phone. No messages. Still, her chest felt full — warm in a way she couldn’t explain. Across the city, Ariana stood once more by her office window, the same spot she had been in that morning. The night was quiet, the city lights flickering below. She thought of Tessa’s laughter — how soft it was, how easy it had been to listen. Then she caught herself smiling. “Ridiculous,” she whispered to the empty room. But the smile didn’t fade. She turned off the lights and left the office, her heels clicking softly against the floor. Somewhere deep inside her, she knew — this wasn’t just curiosity anymore. It was something far more dangerous. Something she couldn’t control.
