Bill drew back, smiling so very gently, and he wiped the confused woman’s eyes. “Honey,” he told her patiently, “I’m sorry if I—” Biting his lip, he squirmed slightly. “W-well, made you suspicious or anything, but, gee, I had to arrange everything and…” Elizabeth could only blink back at him, her emotions so overwrought and torn that she could not even think. For that look in his familiar hazel eyes, so open and defenseless, seemed to drizzle down inside her somehow, and soothe her, like balm upon her hurting soul. And it was the truth, she knew all at once now, a little ashamed of her sudden doubt—he truly had not done anything wrong.
