The silently suave Kyle led Elizabeth through wide sunken areas whose irregular shape somehow gave an impression of coziness despite their overall size, unexpected raised stage-like platforms seemingly ready-made to be ringed in seats, intriguing niches and alcoves where fittings in arched entryways suggested they would be screened later with curtains, and twisty side corridors whose layout seemed calculated to restrict the too-easy investigation by the roving eye. All floors were carpeted in the heavy, patterned burgundy, but interior walls stood in varying states of finish, with no pictures or mirrors or other adornment yet, and still no furniture was in evidence, nor had greenery been arranged in the apparent planters.
