Chapter Five

Three Days Later – Aboard the De Luca Yacht, Hudson River The city skyline glowed in the distance like a smoldering ember—alive, powerful, and just out of reach. From the top deck of the De Luca yacht, it looked harmless. Peaceful, even. But Valentina knew better. The city was never peaceful. Not when it belonged to men like her father. And not when Luciano Moretti was watching from the shadows. Valentina leaned against the railing, the wind lifting strands of her dark hair as she stared out over the water. She hated boats. Hated the illusion of isolation. Out here, there was nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide if things went wrong. Which made it the perfect place for her father to hold a “private” family gathering. Inside, the music pulsed—big band brass and laughter, a carnival of champagne and clinking glasses. The De Luca family in full display. Criminals dressed as kings. Traitors in tailored suits. She didn’t belong among them. Not anymore. “Why aren’t you inside, piccolina?” Valentina stiffened at the voice behind her. She didn’t have to turn to know it was him. Angelo De Luca. Her uncle. The only man in the family more dangerous than her father. “I needed air,” she said, keeping her voice even. Angelo stepped beside her, his cologne thick and expensive, his smile painted like oil over rust. “I heard about Salvo,” he said casually. Valentina’s heart kicked. “Did you?” He glanced at her. “Men die. Happens in our line of work.” She met his gaze. “Did it happen… or was it arranged?” A flicker of amusement danced in his eyes. “You’ve been asking questions lately, Valentina. Ones better left to men with thicker skin.” She smiled, slow and sharp. “Good thing I don’t bruise easy.” Angelo’s grin faltered, just slightly. Then he reached into his coat and pulled out a silver lighter. Her grandfather’s. The same one that had disappeared two years ago after his sudden, unexplained death. “I keep it as a reminder,” Angelo murmured, turning the lighter in his hand. “Of what happens when family forgets its place.” Valentina’s blood went cold. There it was. The silent threat. Wrapped in sentiment. Sealed with a smile. “I never forget,” she whispered. “I just choose what’s worth remembering.” He laughed, then walked away without another word, disappearing into the golden glow of the yacht’s ballroom. Valentina gripped the railing harder than she meant to, her knuckles bone-white. This wasn’t just about justice anymore. It was about survival. Midtown – Moretti Estate – Same Night Luciano sat alone in his study, the fire flickering in the hearth behind him. A folder sat open on his desk. Inside: photographs. Documents. A birth certificate. And a secret. Valentina De Luca wasn’t who she claimed to be. Born in Palermo. Sent to the States at nine. Raised by the De Luca family—but there was no official adoption, no legal guardianship. In the eyes of the state, she didn’t exist for nearly four years. A ghost. A shadow in the system. That kind of erasure didn’t happen by accident. Someone had buried her past. And Luciano intended to dig it up. Giovanni entered quietly. “Boss. The De Luca yacht just docked. Your informant slipped something into her car.” Luciano looked up. “What?” “A copy of her personal journal. Pages torn, but enough to confirm it.” “Confirm what?” Giovanni hesitated. “She’s trying to take them all down. Not just her father. Everyone. Every last name tied to the old bloodlines.” Luciano leaned back, steepling his fingers. “She’s burning the foundation,” he said softly. Giovanni nodded. “She’s not just a De Luca. She’s a rebellion.” Luciano stared at the fire. And for the first time in years… he felt unsure. Because part of him respected her. And another part—one that whispered with quiet desperation—believed in her. South Bronx – Midnight – The Old Trainyard Valentina crouched beside the rusting remains of a train car, flashlight between her teeth, crowbar in hand. The floor beneath her groaned as she pried open the hatch. Inside—crates. Marked with the De Luca insignia. She broke one open. Weapons. Not just handguns—military-grade. Smuggled through ports under diplomatic cover. Meant for someone powerful. Someone untouchable. Except now, she had the proof. And the next phase of her plan was in motion. But before she could photograph the contents, a whisper cut through the dark. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Valentina whirled, drawing her blade—and froze. Luciano Moretti stepped out from behind a rusted pillar, unarmed, hands in his pockets, eyes steady and unreadable. “How the hell did you—” “You’re not the only one with a network,” he said simply. Valentina tightened her grip on the knife. “What do you want?” Luciano walked slowly toward her. “The truth.” “I don’t owe you that.” “No,” he agreed. “But if we’re going to survive what’s coming, we need to stop playing this game like enemies.” She narrowed her eyes. “You think we’re allies?” “I think we’re the only ones left who know the board’s on fire.” Valentina didn’t lower the blade. Not yet. “You expect me to trust you?” Luciano took one more step. Close enough for her to smell the rain on his coat. Close enough to feel the tension hanging in the air between them. “No,” he said. “But I expect you to listen.” She stared at him, breath shallow, pulse racing. Then, slowly, she dropped the knife. Just an inch. But enough. He handed her a folded sheet of paper. Her name was typed across the top. A file. Stolen from the Department of Justice. Inside were names—officials tied to the De Luca empire. And hers, listed under surveillance. “They’re watching you too,” he said. “And if we don’t do something, they’ll come for us both.” Valentina looked up, storm in her eyes. “Then let them come,” she said. “I’ll burn every name on that list before they touch me.” Luciano smiled—something bitter, something almost soft. “I think you will.” They stood there in the dark, surrounded by forgotten weapons and the scent of rain on steel. Enemies. Allies. Something in between. And neither of them realized they were being watched. Not yet.
