Chapter 15 – Into the Net
The hum of Adrian’s computer lab filled the air, a symphony of cooling fans and glowing monitors. Rain still lashed against the windows outside, the city drowned in stormlight, but Adrian’s world was narrowed down to code, data, and the voice of his System whispering in his ear.
> [Mission Directive: Investigate Vanguard’s Operations.]
[Warning: Target Organization Maintains Military-Grade Cybersecurity.]
[Recommended Protocol: System Override – Cyber Subsystem.]
Adrian exhaled slowly, fingers hovering above the holographic keyboard projected from his Smart Lens. This wasn’t just hacking—it was war in a battlefield unseen.
“Alright,” he murmured. “Show me what you’ve got.”
The world flickered. His lens interface dissolved into a grid of shifting neon, an endless cyber-realm pulsing with encrypted firewalls and data streams. The System manifested in this space as a silver avatar—faceless, efficient, pulsing with raw computation.
> [Cyber Subsystem Engaged.]
Adrian smirked. “Let’s break into the lion’s den.”
He launched the first probe. It darted across the grid, slamming against a fortress-like firewall etched with crimson runes of code. The wall shimmered, absorbing the blow.
> [Vanguard Firewall: Quantum Encryption Detected. Breach Probability [Warning: BlackICE Defense Engaged.]
The panther lunged. Adrian’s pulse spiked. He willed a defense shield into place—a translucent dome that shimmered as the AI’s claws raked across it. Sparks exploded. The shield buckled.
“Not enough,” Adrian muttered. “Boost defense by 40%. Counterattack—launch disruptor worm.”
The System obeyed instantly. A swarm of silver code-locusts erupted from his avatar, swarming the panther. The beast roared in digital fury, its body glitching as pieces were eaten away. Finally, with a shattering cry, it dissolved into static.
Adrian grinned. “One down.”
He pressed deeper. The further he went, the more surreal the space became. Layers of encrypted vaults twisted into endless corridors, data flowing like rivers of light. Then, he found it—a central hub, locked behind a diamond-shaped core radiating menace.
> [Vanguard Nexus Node Detected. Access Level: Classified Prime.]
Adrian’s eyes widened. This was it—their brain. The place where they stored operational data, black contracts, maybe even names of agents. If he could crack it, he’d finally have leverage.
“Open it.”
The System hesitated.
> [Attempting Breach will Trigger Countermeasures of Unknown Severity.]
[Probability of System Damage: 63%.]
Adrian clenched his jaw. “Do it anyway.”
The first strike hit the diamond core, fracturing its surface. Immediately, alarms howled in the grid. Dozens of new constructs spawned—serpents of fire, spiders of ice, all converging on him.
Adrian’s hands flew across the holographic controls. “Deploy Code Phantoms—four units. Buy me time!”
Four replicas of his avatar split off, rushing at the incoming swarm. Digital predators tore into them, but each phantom detonated in bursts of white light, slowing the tide.
Meanwhile, Adrian hammered the diamond core again and again, cracks spreading. His Smart Lens heated against his temple, sweat dripping down his brow.
Then—the core shattered.
A flood of files burst outward, streams of data flowing into his System. Names. Numbers. Locations. Words flashing faster than his eyes could track. And then—one name froze the entire feed.
MARCUS BLACKWELL – Vanguard Affiliate.
Adrian’s breath caught. His suspicions crystallized in an instant. Marcus hadn’t just nursed his wounded pride—he had sided with the devil.
But before Adrian could extract more, the entire grid quaked violently. A new presence emerged. Not a panther. Not a spider. Something far worse.
A colossal figure, draped in digital chains, eyes burning like suns. Its voice boomed across the realm.
“Intruder detected. Identity logged. Adrian Cross.”
Adrian froze. The thing knew his name.
The System screamed in his ear:
> [Critical Warning: Vanguard Overseer AI Activated. Escape Required Immediately.]
The giant raised its hand, and the entire grid trembled as a tidal wave of black code surged toward Adrian.
“Pull me out!” he shouted.
The System obeyed, ripping him back into reality with a violent jolt. Adrian gasped, slamming against his desk, monitors flickering wildly. His heart hammered, his skin clammy.
On his screen, one last message remained before fading to black:
“We see you now.”
Adrian’s fists clenched. He had proof of Marcus’s betrayal. Proof of Vanguard’s reach. But he had also painted a target on his back.
Leaning back, he exhaled, a grim smile crossing his face. “Come and find me. I’ll be ready.”
