--- Chapter 12 – Blades in the Dark The dorm room was silent, the chaos of the Tech Expo hours behind him. Adrian sat cross-legged on his bed, the crystalline Aegis Core hovering quietly above his open palm. Its glow painted shifting patterns across the walls. His Smart Lens flickered to life. > [Mission Complete: Tech Expo Domination.] [Reward Granted: Combat Subsystem (Version 1.0).] Adrian leaned back, a small smile touching his lips. “Combat subsystem, huh? About time.” The system’s voice filled his thoughts, clear and neutral. > [Subsystem initializing. Core directives: Threat detection, tactical response, physical augmentation compatibility. Do you wish to run a trial?] Adrian’s eyes gleamed. “Run it.” The Core pulsed, and suddenly the room shifted. No—his perception shifted. Lines traced across every object: his chair, his desk, the window. Weak points glowed faintly—structural stress on the wood, potential trajectories if the chair were thrown, the shatter radius of the glass. His entire environment became a battlefield, every detail reduced to data. > [Combat Subsystem Active. Basic Protocol: Analyze. Engage. Neutralize.] A new option appeared before his eyes. > [Training Simulation Available. Begin?] Adrian didn’t hesitate. “Begin.” The world dissolved in light. --- He stood in a vast, empty arena of black steel. Figures emerged from the darkness—shadowy humanoids, faceless but armed with blades and rifles. Ten of them, circling like wolves. A familiar thrill coursed through him. In his past life, he had known combat, death, war. This… this was like being handed back the weapons he had been born to wield. The first shadow lunged. Time slowed. Trajectory lines lit up in his vision, predicting the exact arc of the blade. Adrian stepped aside smoothly, grabbing the shadow’s arm and twisting—an instant, perfect counter. The enemy dissolved into light. Another rushed from behind. His body moved without thought, guided by the subsystem. He ducked, kicked, and the figure shattered. Each movement was efficient, brutal, precise. He was no longer just Adrian Cross, reborn genius. He was a weapon sharpened by both human instinct and machine precision. One by one, the shadows fell until the arena was still. The system chimed. > [Trial Complete. Performance Rating: S.] [Subsystem Upgrade Path Unlocked: Neural Reflex Enhancement.] Adrian exhaled, sweat beading on his forehead though his body hadn’t truly moved. “So… this is only the beginning.” He glanced at the Core, still hovering faintly in the real world. “With Aegis, I’ll never be caught unprepared. Not by Marcus. Not by those men in the shadows.” --- Meanwhile, across the city, Marcus Blackwell sat alone in his family’s penthouse office. The glow of his robots’ monitors reflected against his pale face, twisted with fury. The Tech Expo replayed again and again on the screen before him—Adrian’s voice, Adrian’s AI, Adrian stealing the spotlight that had always belonged to Marcus. He slammed his fist onto the desk, sending a mug crashing to the floor. “He humiliated me. Me.” From the corner of the room, a smooth voice answered. “He outclassed you.” Marcus turned sharply. A tall man in a charcoal suit leaned against the wall, his presence calm but chilling. Marcus hadn’t even heard him enter. “Who the hell are you?” Marcus snapped. The man smiled faintly. “A friend. Let’s just say… I represent people who are very interested in Adrian Cross. People who would prefer his brilliance didn’t go unchecked.” Marcus narrowed his eyes. “You want him gone.” “Precisely,” the man said, stepping forward, his gaze cold as steel. “And you want revenge. We can help each other.” Marcus hesitated. The hatred boiling inside him screamed for release, but something about this stranger’s aura was unsettling. Dangerous. Still, the image of Adrian smirking at him burned in his mind. He clenched his fists. “What do I need to do?” The stranger’s smile widened. “Good. That’s the right question.” --- Back in his dorm, Adrian sat by the window, the city lights sprawling below. Students were still buzzing about his victory, but he ignored them. His instincts whispered louder than their cheers. Enemies were moving. Some in the open, some in shadows. He could feel the tide shifting, currents of danger pulling closer. The Smart Lens chimed softly. > [Warning: Multiple data traces detected. Surveillance attempts in progress.] Adrian’s eyes narrowed. He reached into his pocket and tapped the edge of the Aegis Core. Its pulse brightened, ready. “They think they can hunt me,” he murmured. His reflection in the glass smirked back at him. “But they don’t know yet—I’m already hunting them.” ---
