Chapter 4 – A Harsh Awakening
Adrian’s stomach growled, loud enough to echo in the small room. He glanced at the instant noodles stacked in the corner—cheap, stale, the kind of food someone surviving paycheck to paycheck lived on.
He rubbed his temple. So, I’ve inherited this body’s problems too. Poverty, debts… This life isn’t going to hand me luxury just because I’ve got a system.
A knock at the door cut through his thoughts. Sharp. Demanding.
“Open up, bastard!” a man’s voice barked. “Rent’s overdue again. You think you can hide forever?”
The door rattled as fists pounded against it. Adrian’s eyes narrowed. His new body’s memories flooded in—landlord’s enforcers. This body’s former self had been drowning in loans, barely scraping by.
A cruel smile tugged at Adrian’s lips. So the world wants to test me already? Perfect.
He slipped the Smart Lens into place. Instantly, data scrolled across his vision:
> [Door Integrity: Weak – can withstand three heavy impacts.]
[Two life forms detected outside. Heart rate elevated. One armed with blunt weapon.]
Adrian stood calmly as the door shook again.
“Last warning!” the thug snarled.
Adrian didn’t flinch. Instead, he spoke clearly, his voice like ice.
“Lens—activate intimidation protocol.”
The lens shimmered. The hallway camera—something the enforcers thought was broken—hijacked instantly by his quantum interface. A distorted, monstrous image of himself appeared on their phones at full volume: glowing eyes, robotic voice overlaying his words.
“LEAVE. THIS. PLACE.”
The two men outside screamed, dropping the bat with a clatter. Within seconds, their footsteps thundered down the stairwell, curses trailing behind.
Silence returned. Adrian leaned against the desk, chuckling softly.
“In my past life, they stole from me. In this one, I’ll make the world bow without lifting a finger.”
