Chapter 8

The months that followed were not without challenges. Some of the older pack members never fully accepted Elara, though they were wise enough to keep their dissent quiet. There were still whispers, still sideways glances. But Elara had allies now—Rylan, Mari, a growing number of younger wolves who admired her courage. Even Seraphina thawed gradually, finding common ground in their shared love for Kael. Magnus, surprisingly, became one of Elara’s strongest advocates. He never spoke of their past, and she never asked him to. But there was an understanding between them—a quiet acknowledgment of old wounds and new beginnings. Elara threw herself into pack life with a dedication that surprised everyone. She trained with the warriors, learning to fight and hunt. She helped Mari in the infirmary, drawing on her own experiences as a rogue to comfort the wounded and frightened. She sat in on council meetings, offering insights that came from a life lived on the margins. And she loved Kael with a ferocity that matched his own. “I never thought I’d have this,” she told him one spring evening, as they walked through the gardens, now bursting with new life. “A home. A family. A purpose.” Kael pulled her close, breathing in her scent—honeysuckle and home. “You deserve all of it and more.” “Do you ever wonder what would have happened if you hadn’t found me that night?” “Every day,” he admitted. “And it terrifies me. You were so close to death. If I’d been a few minutes later...” She silenced him with a kiss. “You weren’t. You found me. You saved me. And now I’m yours forever.” “Forever,” he agreed. “And beyond.” The pregnancy was discovered on the first day of summer. Mari confirmed it with a wide smile. “The Alpha and Luna are expecting. Congratulations.” Kael’s reaction was immediate and overwhelming. He swept Elara into his arms, spinning her around the infirmary until Mari scolded him for endangering her patient. Elara laughed—a bright, joyful sound that still caught Kael off guard sometimes, given everything she’d endured. “A pup,” she breathed, pressing her hands to her still-flat stomach. “Our pup.” “Our pup,” Kael echoed, his voice thick with emotion. He carried her back to their chambers and spent the rest of the day doting on her with an intensity that made Rylan roll his eyes. But beneath the Alpha’s joy was a fierce, almost desperate protectiveness. The pregnancy would be a vulnerable time—enemies within and without might see it as an opportunity. “Nothing will happen to you,” he told her that night, his hand resting on her belly. “Or to our child. I swear it.” Elara covered his hand with hers. “I know. I’m not afraid.” And for the first time in her life, she meant it.
