Love In The Rain:Part Two.

The way he said it-not as a line, not as flattery, but as if it were a fact, sent a warmth curling through her chest. For a moment, they just stood there, the distant patter of rain filling the silence. And then, as if pulled by something unseen, Naomi reached for his hand. Desmond’s fingers closed around hers without hesitation, his grip warm and steady. The world around them faded; the rain, the garden, the glow of the lanterns, all of it melted away until there was only this moment. And just like that, Naomi knew. This wasn’t just a fleeting crush. This was the beginning of something real. The rain had finally stopped by the time Desmond walked Naomi back to her dorm. They stood outside the entrance, the night air crisp and cool. “I had a great time tonight,” Desmond said, his voice softer now, more serious. Naomi nodded. “Me too.” He hesitated, then stepped closer, just a fraction. “Can I see you again?” A slow smile spread across her lips. “I’d be offended if you didn’t.” Desmond grinned, relief flickering across his face. “Alright then. It’s a date.” He stepped back, giving her one last lingering look before turning and heading down the path. Naomi watched him go, her heart thudding against her ribs. The soft glow of Naomi’s dorm window illuminated the sidewalk where she stood, her breath curling in the cool night air. Desmond’s footsteps had faded into the distance, but her pulse still thrummed from his last lingering look. She touched her fingertips with her palm, feeling the warmth where his hand had been. Something about him pulled at her, something easy yet electrifying, like the promise of a story just waiting to be told. Inside her dorm, her roommate, Tasha, was sprawled across her bed, flipping through a textbook with her headphones in. She looked up as Naomi closed the door behind her. “Oh, that look,” Tasha teased, pulling out an earbud. “Tell me everything.” Naomi tossed her damp jacket onto her desk chair, shaking her head with a laugh. “It was… nice.” Tasha gasped. “Nice? Naomi, your face is glowing. You look like you just stepped out of a romance movie.” “Shut up,” Naomi said, rolling her eyes. But she couldn’t stop the smile pulling at her lips. Tasha sat up, grinning. “So? Spill. Who is he?” “His name’s Desmond. "We met this morning, and then…” She hesitated, replaying the entire night in her mind. The rain, the garden, the way his fingers had wrapped around hers like they belonged there. “And then?” Tasha prompted, practically vibrating with curiosity. Naomi flopped onto her bed, staring at the ceiling. “And then I think I met someone who could actually mean something.” Tasha’s smirk softened into something more genuine. “Oh, girl. You’ve got it bad.” Maybe she did. And for the first time in a long time, she didn’t mind one bit. The days that followed turned into something Naomi could only describe as effortless magic. Desmond became a constant in her world. He met her outside her dorm for morning coffee runs. Between classes, they’d sneak away to their garden spot, laughing over inside jokes and stealing quiet moments just to be together. Some nights, they walked aimlessly through campus, hand brushing but never quite interlocking, teasing, testing the invisible threads and pulling them closer. It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t forced. It was simply them. One evening, they sat side by side on a wooden bench, Naomi’s head resting against Desmond’s shoulder as the last light of the sunset faded. “I feel like I’ve known you forever,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. Naomi’s fingers curled into the sleeve of his hoodie, anchoring herself to the moment. “Me too.” She tilted her head up slightly, catching the way his gaze traced the curve of her lips before flickering to her eyes. Slowly, as if the universe itself had been waiting for this exact moment, Desmond leaned in. Naomi’s breath hitched, her heart racing. And then, A loud voice cut through the air. “Yo, Des! Are you coming to the game?” Desmond tensed, pulling back just before their lips met. Naomi blinked, her skin still buzzing, her heart still racing. Across the courtyard, a group of guys waved him over. Desmond exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Ah, damn. I forgot. I told them I’d go.” Naomi tried to ignore the rush of disappointment. “It’s okay,” she said quickly, forcing a smile. Go. I’ll see you later. Desmond hesitated, his eyes flicking to her lips again, like he was considering something. Then he let out a low chuckle. “I’m going to make that up to you,” he promised. She arched her brow. “Make what up to me?” He smirked, standing. “You’ll see.” And with that, he jogged off, leaving Naomi with a hammering heart and the undeniable knowledge that she had just fallen hard. A few nights later, Desmond kept his promise. Naomi had just finished a late-night study session when she got his text: Meet me in the garden. Her stomach flipped. She didn’t even hesitate. The air was crisp as she walked the familiar path, her heart racing in anticipation. She found Desmond leaning against the old oak tree, hands tucked into his pockets, that boyish smirk on his lips. “You’re late,” he teased. Naomi scoffed. “You gave me, like, two minutes’ notice.” He stepped closer, the amusement in his eyes softening into something more intense. “I had to make sure it was worth the wait.” Before she could respond, he reached for her hand, pulling her gently toward him. Naomi barely had time to breathe before his lips finally met hers. It was slow. Warm. Steady. Like the rain that had first brought them together, soft, unhurried, but impossible to ignore. Desmond’s fingers curled at the nape of her neck, tilting her closer as he deepened the kiss. Naomi’s hands slid up his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her palms. The world around them faded into nothing. No exams. No deadlines. No distractions. Just this. Just them. When they finally pulled apart, Desmond rested his forehead against hers, a breathless chuckle escaping his lips. “Worth the wait?” he murmured. Naomi smiled, her fingers still gripping his hoodie. “Absolutely.”
