WHAT I AM NOW VERA Drake’s hands were warm on my bare shoulders. I was sitting on the edge of his bed wrapped in a sheet that smelled like him, knees drawn up to my chest, and he was crouched in front of me like I was something breakable. Like I might shatter if he moved too fast. Maybe he was right. “Ask me anything,” he said. “Whatever you want to know. No more secrets.” I had about a thousand questions and couldn’t pick one.
