THE DOUBLE-EDGED TRUCE

The next morning, before changing into the fresh clothes Julian had ordered for her, Elena slipped into the guest wing hallway and called her sister. El? Thank God, Maya’s voice came through the receiver, thick with sleep but tight with panic. You didn't come home last night. I was twenty minutes away from calling the police. Maya, I'm okay. I'm safe, Elena whispered. I’m at Julian’s place. I’ll explain everything when I get back. A driver is bringing me home in an hour. “ “Julian's place?” Maya gasped, but Elena ended the call before more questions came. Elena smoothed down the crisp, expensive casual blouse the house staff had left for her. She walked down the long, sunlit hallway toward Julian's master suite, determined to thank him and perhaps discover where they stood after the unforgettable moment in the kitchen. She knocked softly on Julian’s door, but a middle-aged housekeeper appeared instead. “Mr Cross left for the headquarters at five-thirty this morning, Miss Brooks. He asked me to prepare your breakfast before the car arrived.” A hollow disappointment settled in Elena's stomach. Julian had already retreated behind his glass wall, his armor firmly back in place. By ten that morning, Elena sat on the worn-out sofa in her own living room, cradling a mug of tea. Maya sat cross-legged opposite her, her face hardening from shock to absolute fury as Elena recounted the ballroom humiliation, the insults, and the wine Chloe had poured down her dress. “I knew it!” Maya slammed her hand on the table. “I have always warned you about Chloe. She keeps you around because your struggle makes her feel superior. The moment you stepped into the spotlight, she humiliated you. She’s disgusting.” “I still regret hiding the job,” Elena said quietly. “ If I’d told her from the beginning, she wouldn't have felt blindsided. I was afraid of her reaction, and that only made everything worse. I want to go over to her house later today. I need to apologize for the misunderstanding and explain the coincidence properly.” “Are you insane? “Maya stood on her feet, pacing down the kitchen. “You don’t owe her anything!” Before Elena could reply, her phone buzzed. An encrypted corporate number flashed across the screen. She answered cautiously. "Hello?" “Are you resting?” Julian’s deep, raspy voice made Elena straighten instantly. Behind him came the muted hum of moving executives and ringing phones. “Mr. Cross,” Elena said, her pulse quickening. Yes, I'm at home. I was just about to—” “Good. Stay home,” Julian said, his voice professional but lacking its usual biting malice. “I’m looking for the Q2 maritime fuel ledger for the Rotterdam logistics. It isn’t in the primary server cache. Elena mentally mapped the archive she’d built.” It won't be there, sir. I can come into the office right now and extract it for you. It’ll only take twenty minutes. No, Julian said at once, his tone firm. I gave you a day off for a reason, Miss Brooks. Your voice still sounds exhausted. Stay home and rest. Just tell me where the directory is.” Warmth spread through Elena’s chest despite herself. “It’s under the 'Pending Legal' partition, encrypted with the project code Flint-2022. The file is named ‘Q2_Rotterdam_Ledger.” “ I found it, Julian said. A brief silence stretched between them. “Drink some tea, Elena. I’ll see you Wednesday morning.” The call ended. Elena lowered her phone, staring at the blank screen. Maya leaned against the door frame, arms crossed, a teasing smirk tugging on her lips. “What?" Elena asked, her cheeks flushing warm. “Oh, nothing, “ Maya laughed, nudging Elena's shoulder. “I was just wondering: since when does the ruthless Julian Cross call his assistants to make sure they're resting? 'Drink some tea, Elena'? “ She mimicked in a deep voice. “ Is there something you’re not telling me? Since when did your terrifying boss become Mr. Nice Guy? “He’s not being nice,” Elena insisted, hiding her face behind her mug. He just doesn't want his data compromised. It's strictly business. “Right. And I'm the Queen of England," Maya deadpanned. Later that afternoon, Elena walked through the iron gates of the Vance estate, her stomach knotted with dread. But she refused to run from the conversation. When the maid led her into the living room, Chloe was sitting on a chaise lounge, staring at her tablet. She expected shouting or being thrown out. Instead, Chloe looked up, sorrow softening her expression. She said softly, “Standing up and closing the distance. I... I was hoping you would come.” Elena paused, caught entirely off guard. Chloe, I came to apologize. I should have told you I got the job at Cross International. It was a coincidence. My sister sent the CV without telling me, and I didn't realize Julian was the man from the café until my first day at Cross International. I hid it because everything happened so fast, and I’m sorry you had to find out that way. “No, Elena,” Chloe said, reaching for her hands. I’m the one who should be asking for forgiveness.” “ Last night... my father spent the morning screaming about our bankruptcy…” When I saw you beside the richest man in the room, I snapped. I was jealous and cruel.” Can you ever forgive me? Elena searched for Chloe's eyes. They were soft, remorseful. Trusting the friend she’d known for years, she let out a slow breath, her defenses finally falling. “Of course, Chloe. We’ve been friends too long to let this destroy us. I just want things to be right between us.” Chloe pulled her into a tight hug, burying her face in Elena’s shoulder. But over Elena's shoulder, unseen by Elena, the warmth vanished from Chloe’s face. Her eyes hardened, her jaw tightening with bitter resentment. How could someone like Elena get that close to him? Venom curled through Chloe’s thoughts. She’d seen the way Julian looked at Elena in the ballroom, protective, furious . He had never looked at anyone else that way. Chloe didn't care about the apology, or their friendship. As they pulled apart, Chloe looked at Elena’s trusting smile and realized one thing. Elena was her golden ticket… Elena sat outside Julian’s office every day. All Chloe just had to do was play the redeemed best friend. Elena would open the door, and Chloe would make sure she was the one Julian kept. Let's put this behind us," Chloe said sweetly, pouring Elena a glass of sparkling water. Tell me... what is he really like to work for behind closed doors?
