THE EXHIBITION OF POWER

At exactly 11:55 a.m, Elena knocked once on the glass office door and entered. She carried no binders. Instead, she placed a neatly formatted three-page summary directly on Julian’s desk. Julian didn't look up immediately. He let the silence stretch, testing her nerves. When he finally raised his eyes, he expected to see a look of defeated exhaustion. Instead, Elena stood before him with her shoulders squared, her expression calm. “The audit is complete, Mr. Cross”, she said evenly. I found fourteen discrepancies between the handwritten customs clearances and the digital stamps from the 2022 European manifests. Most were simple data entry delays, but three maritime fuel invoices from the Rotterdam hub were double-billed. I have already flagged them for legal. Julian stared at the sheets. He picked them up, scanning the rows of data. Every calculation was flawless. Every cross-referencing matched to the exact timestamp. He’d given her enough paperwork to overwhelm an entire team of junior analysts, yet she had dissected it alone in less than six hours. For the first time, Julian was impressed. How is she this good? Most people under this level of pressure scrambled, cried, or made careless errors. But Elena moved with a terrifying resilience. She lacked the pedigree he expected, yet she possessed a sharp instinct money couldn't buy. Adequate, Julian said, masking his genuine astonishment behind his usual cold shield. He set the papers down. You can return to your desk. “Thank you, sir,” Elena said, turning on her heel before quietly leaving the office. By 4:00 PM, the atmosphere in the executive office shifted. Marcus walked into Julian’s office, looking frantic as he adjusted his watch. Jules, we’ve got a problem. The compliance issue at the logistics port has become a legal nightmare. I can't make tonight’s investor dinner at the Grand Horizon. Julian’s pen stilled over a contract. His jaw tightened. The Grand Horizon dinner was a high-stakes gathering of the city's elite investors. Protocol demanded he bring a company. Find a replacement, Julian ordered. “There's no time to brief anyone, Marcus said, Brooks is the only person who can step in. If anyone can handle tonight, it’s her. Julian’s flint eyes tracked Marcus's gaze. The thought of introducing Elena into a room full of billionaires who judged pedigree before talent made his chest tighten. But his logic won. He had no other choice. Ten minutes later, Elena rode the private elevator down to the lobby. She had no idea why the CEO suddenly needed her, but experience had taught her one thing: when Julian Cross changed plans, trouble always followed. She slid into the back seat of Julian's sleek luxury sedan. She looked down at her thrifted slacks and simple cotton blouse, feeling entirely unprepared. Mr. Cross, I don't think I am dressed for an elite dinner,” Elena said quietly, glancing at him. We are fixing that, Julian said without looking up from his tablet. The car is taking us to an executive salon downtown. For the next two hours, Elena felt like a doll in expert hands. Julian sat quietly in the leather armchair, watching as expert stylists transformed her. They swept her dark hair into an elegant updo before dressing her in a midnight blue silk gown that skimmed her frame. When Elena stepped out of the dressing room, she looked in the mirror; for a moment, she hardly recognized herself. The woman staring back at her looked elegant, poised, and quietly commanding. She walked out to where Julian was waiting, her heart tracing a nervous beat. Mr. Cross... why are you doing all this? it’s only a business dinner.” Julian stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. His gaze swept over her and paused for the briefest moment. An unfamiliar flicker crossed his expression before it vanished. She no longer looked like an overworked assistant. She looked as though she belonged among the city’s elite. The unexpected intensity of his attraction unsettled him. He couldn't afford to let his guard down. Do not flatter yourself, Miss Brooks”, Julian said, his voice dropping into a harsh, demeaning register. He turned away, his expression hardening. You are representing Cross International tonight. I am only doing this so you don't look cheap and out of place beside me. I have a reputation to maintain. I won't have my staff looking like a charity case in front of my investors. His words landed with brutal precision. The brief moment of magic vanished, replaced by a cold, burning anger. She clutched the fabric of her gown, her jaw tightening. He is just a rich bully with an inflated ego, she reminded herself. Crystal clear, sir, Elena said, her voice dripping with a quiet, lethal politeness. I will make sure your precious reputation stays intact.” The Grand Horizon ballroom shimmered with crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and the quiet hum of high society. Near the center of the room stood Chloe Vance in a striking red gown that drew every eye. She had begged her father for an invitation, and he’d called in every corporate favor to get her through those doors. She knew Julian Cross would be here tonight. She was desperate to find him. To explain the cafe misunderstanding, and earn back his trust. She tightened her grip on her wineglass as her gaze swept the crowd, her heart hammering with anticipation. A ripple of whispers spread through the ballroom as the crowd parted near the main entrance. Chloe turned around, her breath catching in her throat. Julian Cross arrived in a dark, tailored tuxedo, commanding every eye in the room. Yet it wasn't Julian who sparked the whisper. It was the woman at his side. Chloe’s eyes widened in absolute, venomous disbelief. Elena entered with her chin high, her hands resting lightly on Julian's sleeve. Her midnight-blue dress flowed like liquid beneath the chandeliers. Julian leaned in as she spoke, giving her an attention he’d never offered anyone else. Elena? Chloe’s mind fractured with a volatile mix of confusion and pure rage. Chloe’s mind raced. She didn’t know Elena worked at Cross International. All she saw was the waitress from the cafe standing beside the city’s most powerful man. She lied to me, Chloe thought, anger flaring. She ruined my date on purpose so she could steal him for herself. Chloe strode across the ballroom, her heels clicking sharply against the polished floor. She intercepted them in front of a circle of foreign delegates. “Well, well, well,” Chloe laughed, her voice carrying across the ballroom. Nearby conversations died as heads turned. I didn't realize Cross International was opening its doors to street rats tonight. Elena froze as Chloe stepped into her space; her eyes blazing with anger. Chloe, don't do this here, Elena warned quietly. Don't do what? “A fraud? Chloe's voice rose until the entire ballroom fell silent. “ Julian, do you know who she really is? She lives in a rundown apartment on the edge of the city. She ran my errands for pocket change. She came on our blind date pretending to be me just so she could worm her way into your life!" Silence crashed over the ballroom. Even the musicians seemed to miss a beat. A collective gasp through the ballroom. Whispers erupted as eyes darted between Elena and Julian. Elena felt the room spin. Heat climbed Elena’s neck as hundreds of eyes settled on her. Before Elena could react, Chloe stepped forward and, with a sharp flick of her wrist, emptied her glass down the front of Elena’s beautiful midnight-blue gown. Cold wine soaked through the silk, spreading across the midnight blue fabric. Elena gasped as the chilled wine stole her breath. Before Chloe could speak again, Julian stepped forward, placing himself between the two women. The ballroom fell silent. His expression turned so cold that the nearest guests instinctively stepped back. “Miss Vance, “ Julian said, his voice cutting through the silence. “You have exactly five seconds to leave this venue. Effective immediately, every business under the Cross International umbrella is closed to your family’s retail division.” Chloe's breath caught. The color drained from her face as the consequences hit her. Julian didn't wait for a response. He turned and took Elena’s wrist, guiding her away. He ignored the stares of investors and the relentless clicks of the cameras. With a fierce, protective urgency, he pulled Elena through the parting crowd, marching her straight out of the ballroom and down the grand marble steps. The cool night air greeted them at the driveway. Julian opened the sedan’s rear door and guided Elena inside without releasing her wrist. He slid in right after her, and the door closed, sealing out the noise of the gala. The sedan pulled away from the curb. Silence filled the cabin, heavy, with adrenaline and everything left unsaid. Elena stared out the window, her trembling hands resting on her wine-stained gown. Beside her, Julian sat rigid, staring straight ahead. His knuckles were white against his clenched fists. Without looking at her, he finally spoke. “No one humiliates what’s under my protection”
