CHAPTER FIFTEEN

CHAPTER FIFTEEN The Name in the Stone Rain had washed the academy clean overnight. The ancient walls glistened beneath a pale morning sky, while droplets clung to ivy-covered towers like scattered crystals. For once... The air felt lighter. Luna welcomed the change. After days of whispers and unanswered questions, she longed for something ordinary. Even one peaceful morning. She should have known Ebon Hollow had other plans. "Today's class will be held outdoors." Professor Vale stood at the front of the lecture hall, closing the worn leather notebook in his hands. "The lesson requires observation." No one questioned him. Students quietly gathered their belongings and followed him through the western gate. Beyond it lay grounds Luna had never seen before. The academy gardens gradually gave way to an ancient forest where towering silver-barked trees stretched toward the clouds. Mist drifted lazily between their trunks. Birdsong was absent. Even the wind seemed reluctant to disturb the silence. After several minutes, the trees opened into a wide clearing. Luna stopped. Stone monuments filled the clearing. Hundreds of them. Some no taller than a child. Others towering over the students like weathered giants. Each pillar was carved with names. Thousands of names. Some faded by time. Others sharp enough to appear newly etched. "What is this place?" Luna whispered. Professor Vale answered without turning. "The Hall of Witnesses." No one spoke. Students instinctively lowered their voices. "As long as Ebon Hollow has stood..." He rested one hand against the nearest pillar. "...this place has remembered." "Every student who has entered these halls." Luna stepped closer to one of the stones. The names covered every surface. Generation after generation. Some bore dates. Others only initials. One line caught her attention. Damian Ashford Her eyes widened. "...He's still a student." Before she could think further, another familiar name appeared lower on the same pillar. Mira Valewood. Then... Rowan Ellis. Her heartbeat quickened. Everyone's name was here. Everyone. She searched another pillar. Another. And another. Until... She found her own. Luna Hart She froze. The letters were deeply carved into the stone. As though they had existed for years. Her fingers trembled as she reached toward them. "I arrived two weeks ago..." She whispered. "...How is this possible?" The instant her fingertips brushed the carved letters— A violent gust of wind swept through the clearing. Leaves spiraled into the air. Several students gasped. The stone beneath Luna's hand grew warm. Not hot. Alive. The engraved letters shimmered faintly. Then... Something impossible happened. A second line slowly carved itself beneath her name. No chisel touched the stone. No human hand moved. The words simply appeared. The Covenant Remembers. Silence crashed over the clearing. Every student stared. Someone dropped a book. Another took a frightened step backward. Professor Vale looked at the pillar. For the first time... True surprise crossed his face. Not fear. Not curiosity. Surprise. Rowan whispered, "No..." Mira covered her mouth. Even Celeste's calm composure faltered. Luna slowly turned toward Professor Vale. "What does this mean?" He didn't answer. Because he couldn't. A single raven landed atop the pillar. It tilted its head. Watching Luna. Watching the new words. Then it let out one harsh cry before taking flight again. Professor Vale finally spoke. His voice was lower than she'd ever heard it. "The lesson is over." No one argued. No one moved. The students left the clearing in uneasy silence, but whispers followed them like ghosts among the trees. Only Luna remained staring at the stone for one last heartbeat. She hadn't imagined it. The words were still there. The Covenant Remembers. Somewhere behind the trees... Hidden beyond the mist... Someone smiled.
