CHAPTER FIVE
When Silence Parted
The handle turned.
No one moved.
The silence inside the East Lecture Hall deepened until even the rain tapping against the stained-glass windows seemed impossibly loud.
Luna found herself holding her breath.
The heavy oak door creaked inward.
A young man wearing the academy's silver prefect badge stepped inside. His gaze swept across the room before settling on Professor Vale.
"Professor," he said quietly.
He stepped aside.
Without another word.
As though his only purpose had been to open the door.
A figure entered behind him.
No one announced his name.
No one needed to.
Something shifted inside the room.
It wasn't dramatic.
No gust of wind swept through the hall.
No candles flickered.
The academy itself remained unchanged.
Only the people changed.
A girl in the front row unconsciously straightened her posture.
Someone quietly lowered the book they'd been pretending to read.
Another student looked down at the desk, as though meeting the newcomer's eyes would be a mistake.
Beside Luna, Rowan's fingers tightened around the edge of his notebook.
She heard the leather cover creak beneath his grip.
It was the first time she'd ever seen genuine fear on his face.
Not nervousness.
Not unease.
Fear.
Luna followed everyone's gaze.
Luna followed everyone's gaze.
The newcomer stepped into the lecture hall with an unhurried stride, each footfall so quiet it was almost swallowed by the silence.
He wore the same academy uniform as every other student.
Yet somehow...
It looked as though it had been tailored for him alone.
The fitted black blazer rested neatly across broad shoulders before narrowing to a lean, athletic frame. He wasn't the tallest person Luna had ever seen—perhaps just under six feet—but there was something about the quiet confidence in his posture that made him seem larger than the space around him.
Every movement was effortless.
Controlled.
As though he had never once wasted his energy.
His dark hair, cut in soft, textured layers, framed his face in an effortlessly untamed wolf cut. A few loose strands rested across his forehead, occasionally brushing his eyes before slipping away with the slightest tilt of his head, refusing to be perfectly neat.
Luna's gaze lingered only for a second before she looked away.
Or at least...
She tried to.
There was something strangely difficult about not looking.
His features were refined without seeming delicate—a straight nose, defined cheekbones, and a strong jaw that gave his calm expression an almost sculpted quality.
Then her eyes caught the smallest detail.
Just above the right side of his upper lip, resting lightly against his cheek, was a tiny beauty mark.
It was subtle.
Almost insignificant.
Yet somehow it softened the sharpness of his face just enough to make it unforgettable.
Professor Vale remained standing at the front of the lecture hall.
For a brief moment, neither man spoke.
The silence stretched between them—not hostile, not welcoming.
Measured.
Finally, Professor Vale broke it.
"You're late."
His voice remained calm.
The young man stopped a few paces from the front desk.
"I was summoned."
His reply was equally composed.
Professor Vale folded his hands behind his back.
"Not by me."
"I know."
No apology.
No excuse.
Only certainty.
The exchange lasted mere seconds.
Yet it carried the weight of a conversation everyone else already understood.
As the young man turned toward the rows of desks, his gaze drifted across the room.
Students lowered their eyes before it reached them.
Until...
It found Luna.
For the first time, she saw his eyes clearly.
They were neither cold nor intimidating.
A deep, rich sienna brown.
Steady.
Quiet.
Almost comforting.
Then a ray of pale morning light slipped through the stained glass and brushed across his face.
The color shifted.
Warm amber flickered beneath the brown, like sunlight caught inside polished honey.
Luna blinked.
Had the light changed...
Or had his eyes?
Before she could decide, he looked away as calmly as he had looked at her in the first place.
No curiosity.
No surprise.
No emotion she could name.
Only the brief acknowledgment of one stranger noticing another.
He walked toward the empty seat at the back of the lecture hall.
Not because it was hidden.
Because it was the only place no one else had dared to occupy.
