CHAPTER EIGHT The Letter That Shouldn't Exist The bell's final echo faded into silence. Luna stood frozen in the middle of the corridor, the black envelope trembling ever so slightly between her fingers. Her mind refused to accept what she had just heard. "The academy never sent you an invitation." She looked down at the elegant silver lettering. It was unmistakably hers. Her name. Her handwriting wasn't on it. The seal matched the one she'd received at home. Every detail was identical. Then... Who had written it? "Sir..." Her voice came out quieter than she intended. "If Ebon Hollow didn't invite me..." She lifted her eyes to meet his. "...then who did?" The Headmaster didn't answer immediately. Instead, he resumed walking. The polished heels of his shoes echoed softly through the deserted corridor. Luna hurried after him. "Please." "I deserve an explanation." "You deserve the truth." His reply was calm. "But deserving the truth and surviving it are not always the same thing." Luna frowned. "I don't understand." "I know." They continued in silence until they reached another towering window overlooking the inner courtyard. From above, students crossed winding stone paths in small groups, unaware that the foundations of Luna's world had just begun to c***k. The Headmaster rested one gloved hand lightly against the windowsill. "Tell me, Miss Hart." "When did the invitation arrive?" She searched her memory. "Three weeks before the semester started." "And before that..." "Had you ever heard of Ebon Hollow Academy?" She shook her head. "Never." "I expected as much." His eyes remained fixed on the courtyard below. "This academy does not advertise." "It does not recruit." "It does not seek attention." "Then how do students come here?" "They are found." The answer settled heavily between them. "We observe." "We wait." "And when the time is right..." "We extend an invitation." Luna looked down at the envelope again. "But mine wasn't from you." "No." "Then someone knew I would come here." "They did." A chill crept slowly down her spine. Someone... Somewhere... Had known about Ebon Hollow long before she ever had. Someone had forged the academy's seal. Someone had ensured she would walk through its gates. She tightened her grip on the envelope. "Am I in danger?" For the first time since she'd met him... The Headmaster looked directly into her eyes. There was no fear in his expression. No pity. Only quiet honesty. "Yes." The single word stole the air from her lungs. "But not in the way you imagine." Before she could ask another question... A sharp knock echoed from the far end of the corridor. Three knocks. Evenly spaced. Luna's heartbeat stumbled. The same pattern. The same rhythm. The same sound she'd heard outside her room on her first morning. The Headmaster turned toward the approaching footsteps. His expression remained unreadable. "Come in." A young academy attendant appeared around the corner, bowing respectfully. "Forgive the interruption, Headmaster." He lowered his head. "Professor Vale requests your presence." The Headmaster glanced briefly toward Luna. "I'll join him shortly." The attendant bowed once more before disappearing as quietly as he'd arrived. Silence returned. The Headmaster looked back at Luna. "Our conversation is unfinished." He reached into the pocket of his coat and withdrew a small silver key. Unlike any ordinary key, intricate vines and ravens had been carved into its stem, while the handle formed the shape of a crescent moon. He placed it gently into Luna's palm. The metal was unexpectedly cold. "This key opens a door beneath the East Library." Luna stared at it in confusion. "I don't understand." "You will." He closed her fingers around it. "But you must promise me one thing." She looked up. "Do not use it." Luna blinked. "...What?" "Not yet." His voice remained calm. "No matter how curious you become." "No matter who asks you to." "No matter what you hear." She looked from the key back to him. "Then... why give it to me?" For the first time... The Headmaster smiled. Not warmly. Sadly. "Because it already belongs to you." Before Luna could respond, he stepped away. "Return to your dormitory, Miss Hart." "When the academy is ready..." "You'll receive your answers." He turned and disappeared down the long corridor, his footsteps fading into the silence until only the faint click of his silver pocket watch remained. Luna stood alone. The strange key rested in her closed hand. It felt impossibly heavy for something so small. Somewhere outside... Thunder rolled across the mountains surrounding Ebon Hollow. For reasons she couldn't explain... She had the unsettling feeling that the key wasn't waiting for a door. The door... Was waiting for her.
