CHAPTER ELEVEN
Whispers in the Stacks
The sound stayed with her all day.
Three slow knocks.
Not behind her.
Not beside her.
From within the East Library.
Luna hadn't imagined it.
She was certain.
Yet every time she tried to convince herself it had simply been old wood settling beneath the mountain wind...
She remembered Damian's words.
"Curiosity has a habit of opening doors that should remain closed."
The thought lingered through every lesson.
Professor Vale noticed.
He was halfway through explaining the history of the Northern Kingdoms when the scratch of his fountain pen came to a stop.
"Miss Hart."
Luna looked up, startled.
"Would you care to tell us which treaty ended the Ashen Conflict?"
A dozen students turned toward her.
Luna opened her mouth.
Nothing came.
Professor Vale studied her for a long moment before giving a small nod.
"I'll ask you again tomorrow."
There was no anger in his voice.
Only quiet disappointment.
"I expect you'll know the answer then."
"Yes, Professor."
The lesson continued, but Luna struggled to focus.
For the first time since arriving at Ebon Hollow...
Her thoughts were louder than the lecture.
When the afternoon bell rang, Rowan caught up with her outside the classroom.
"You've been somewhere else all day."
"I know."
"You usually notice everything."
He adjusted his glasses.
"Today you didn't even notice Professor Vale standing beside your desk."
Luna sighed.
"I've just been thinking."
"That's dangerous around here."
She laughed softly.
"I think everything is dangerous around here."
Rowan didn't laugh.
His silence was answer enough.
Together they crossed the central courtyard, where autumn leaves drifted across the worn stone paths.
Students gathered beneath ancient willow trees, reading, talking, or simply enjoying the rare appearance of sunlight.
For a fleeting moment...
The academy felt peaceful.
Then Luna noticed something.
A small first-year girl stood alone near the old fountain, clutching a stack of books nearly as tall as she was.
The books slipped.
They tumbled across the path.
Several students walked around them.
No one stopped.
Without thinking, Luna hurried over.
"Here."
She knelt, gathering the scattered books.
The girl looked up with wide, nervous eyes.
"Thank you..."
"It's okay."
Luna smiled.
"We've all dropped things."
As she handed back the final book, the little girl's gaze drifted past Luna's shoulder.
The color drained from her face.
She took the books and hurried away without another word.
Confused, Luna slowly stood.
She turned.
Damian stood several steps away.
Not watching her.
Watching the fountain.
His expression remained calm, as though he hadn't even noticed the frightened girl.
A cool breeze stirred the courtyard.
For a brief moment, Luna considered thanking him for warning her outside the East Library.
Instead, Damian spoke first.
"You're kind."
The words were so unexpected that Luna forgot to answer.
He looked at her then.
Not intensely.
Simply... directly.
"Don't let this place convince you it's a weakness."
Before she could respond, he walked away, disappearing into the stream of students crossing the courtyard.
Luna remained standing beside the fountain.
She wasn't sure which surprised her more.
That Damian had spoken...
Or that his words felt less like advice...
And more like experience.
That evening, rain returned.
Heavy clouds swallowed the last traces of daylight, leaving the academy wrapped in darkness long before nightfall.
Unable to sleep, Luna wandered to the common room overlooking the western gardens.
The fire crackled softly in the hearth.
Only one other student remained awake.
Mira.
She sat in a high-backed chair near the window, a book resting open in her lap.
She smiled when Luna entered.
"I thought you might be here."
"I couldn't sleep."
Mira closed her book.
"The academy has that effect on new students."
Luna hesitated before taking the seat opposite her.
"Mira..."
"Can I ask you something?"
"You can ask."
"I don't know if I'll answer."
Luna couldn't help smiling.
"Fair enough."
She drew a slow breath.
"What happened in the East Library?"
The smile disappeared from Mira's face.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
Like a candle going out.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
When she finally spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper.
"I've lived at Ebon Hollow for six years."
She looked toward the rain-streaked window.
"And in all that time..."
"I've never seen anyone return from beneath the East Library unchanged."
The fire popped sharply in the silence.
Luna felt the silver key in her pocket.
It suddenly seemed much heavier than before.
