Three days later, Manhollow City Hospital, a top-floor VIP ward. My mother lay half-reclined in the raised hospital bed. She had wasted away to nothing but bones. High-level paraplegia had left her with no sensation below the chest, but her eyes could still move. Those eyes were exactly like mine. She was looking at the man standing behind me. "Mom, this is Leon." I held her hand. "I know him," my mother cut me off. "The eldest heir to the Sterling family. His father's name is carved into my spine." Leon stood by the bed, not sitting. "Mrs. Green," he said. "About the case three years ago, I have all the evidence to overturn it. The fake accounting drafts, the forged transfer records, internal communications from everyone involved. I've reviewed everything." My mother said nothing.
