Alexander
The sound of traffic and car horns woke me from my deep sleep. This was why I hated New York, you couldn't escape the noise even in the comfort of your own home. Wait...Where was I? I opened my eyes and realized I was still in Jordan's living room. I had fallen asleep on the couch and my heart leaped through my chest when I saw Jordan’s small frame sleeping on top of me. No wonder I had the best sleep of my life last night. Even though I slept on a small couch, I was with my mate. Her touch soothed me in a way no sleeping pills ever could.
I slowly craned my neck to see her face resting on my chest. Thankfully she was still asleep and she looked incredibly peaceful. I took the opportunity to study her and memorize every curve of her face. I watched her chest rise and fall with each breath, a steady rhythm I matched with my own. I smiled as I saw a little drool coming from the corner of her mouth. Damn, she was breathtaking.
Unable to help myself, I reached my hand up and started tracing my fingertips up and down her arm. Cece had done the same thing to me just days earlier, but when she touched me it felt wrong and unnatural. This couldn't feel more right. I knew that I would do everything in my power to make sure she woke up in my arms every morning for the rest of my life. At my touch, Jordan let out a satisfied moan and snuggled further into my arms. Suddenly the front of my pants became tighter and I held my breath, hoping it wouldn't wake her up.
To my disappointment, Jordan's breathing changed and a cute little yawn stretched her lips. She snuggled her cheek into my chest and took a deep whiff through her nose. She let out an adorable sigh and smiled, seemingly enjoying the mate bond as much as I did. Suddenly, her whole body stiffened and she opened her eyes.
I quickly shut mine, pretending I was asleep. I didn't want to make her uncomfortable if she thought I was watching her while she slept. I mean, I was. But she didn't need to know that.
"s**t. s**t. Shit." she muttered as she slowly lifted her body and tried to gracefully get off of me. I had to hold in my laughter as she tumbled onto the ground with a loud whoomph. I felt the lack of her touch immediately and my wolf whimpered in disapproval.
This was my queue. I forced a fake yawn and stretched my arms above my head as if I had just woken up. "Good morning." I smiled at her. "I must have fallen asleep on your couch last night. I'm sorry, I hope I didn't overstay my welcome."
A blush crept on her cheeks as she stood there a few feet from me. Her brown hair was standing up on one side and her cheek was red from being slept on. She was truly breathtaking!
I smiled when I realized she was gawking at my flexed bicep that was propped behind my head. Slowly her eyes wandered down my chest to my abs, and then stopped when she noticed my unmistakable bulge trying to rip a hole through the front of my pants.
I was worried my morning wood would scare her, but to my surprise, she subconsciously bit her lip and the smell of her arousal started spreading through the room.
"Jordan?" I asked. My voice frightened her and she jumped, her eyes jumping back to my face. Her entire face burned red when she realized I caught her checking me out.
"Sorry, I.. uh... it's my fault. I suggested we watch The Notebook to be funny and we started it way too late. I should have known better..." she trailed off at the end. She was staring at her feet and her thumb was rubbing circles on the back of her hand again.
I sat up from the couch and started walking toward her. Her breath hitched but she didn’t pull away from me. "Hey, the movie was great and thankfully you have the comfiest couch I've ever slept on. So thank you," I explained honestly and tucked a stray hair behind her ear. "Can I buy you breakfast?"
At the mention of breakfast, she looked down at her apple watch. "Oh! I am totally late for my run. I usually just eat some eggs and will grab a protein shake at this little smoothie shop down the road. They have really great green smoothies, not like some places where it tastes like you're eating grass. Not that I know what grass tastes like... that would be weird. I don't know why I'm telling you all of this."
I couldn't help but laugh out loud. "That is probably the cutest thing you've ever said. I love it when you ramble."
"You do?"
"Yes! I want you to tell me everything. I love hearing about all the fascinating things in your life, like how you've never eaten grass."
"Ha! Stop!" she laughed, lightly smacking my arm. The physical contact made me smile even wider.
"Do you mind if I join you on your run? I haven't been able to get outside for a couple of days and I could use the exercise."
"If you can keep up!" she teased, walking into the kitchen to start making eggs. I was so glad she was already feeling at ease with me. She might not know that we were mates, but I could tell she was starting to feel the effects of the bond. Soon she wouldn't be able to resist me.
Although I hated being apart from her for even a minute, I had to run up to my new apartment to get changed. I had lied to her earlier about it being the only apartment available. I knew she lived in this building so I made the owner an offer he couldn't refuse. He even left all of his furniture and kitchen items, saving me time from having to go shopping.
Drew was sitting in the kitchen eating cereal as I walked through the door. I knew he probably heard me coming from down the hall, but he made a slow-motion turn and eyed me up and down for dramatic effect. He put his hands on his hips, doing a wonderful impression of a worried mother. "And where were you last night?"
I rolled my eyes and walked into my bedroom. He followed me as I rummaged through my overnight duffle bag, trying to find my workout clothes.
"Oh.. so you don't kiss and tell huh?" Drew teased, knowing it would get a reaction out of me.
"We didn't kiss," I corrected him. "...yet."
He chuckled and shook his head. "Not gonna lie, Alexander, I'm surprised. I figured you would have already sealed the deal by now."
An exasperated sigh escaped my lips. "I think in normal circumstances that would have been preferred. But, I know this plan is going to work." I finally found a black t-shirt and my running shoes, but couldn't find an acceptable pair of shorts.
As if reading my mind, Drew left the room and returned a moment later with a pair of his shorts. Being the Alpha, I was the largest man in the pack so although Drew was a large Beta, I was not surprised when his shorts were a little tighter and shorter than I would have normally worn. Maybe it would make Jordan blush. The thought made me smile.
I went into the connecting bathroom to change and thanks to our wolf hearing, we could continue our conversation. Even though we didn’t care about modesty being werewolves, it was nice to have some normal boundaries when we were at home. "So she doesn't know that you're her mate yet?" he asked.
"That's what is so strange. I know she feels the mate bond, her body reacts to me as mine does to her. But it's as if she has never been taught about mates or the bond. She is confused by what she feels for me and has been trying to fight it." I explained.
"Never taught? But she is a werewolf right?"
"I think so. I smell her wolf but it's very faint. Last night she cut herself and she healed herself very quickly, definitely not at human speed. But I was dropping hints last night to see how she responded and she answered them as a human would." I finished changing and came back out to the room to put my shoes on.
"That is weird. Maybe we're going to have to test her."
I shot Drew a warning look. "I am going to be testing her, starting today on our run."
"Prshhh. As if that's a challenge, you're probably the slowest Alpha. Even I beat you in a race," he teased.
I pretended to take a swing at him and he ducked under my arm in a tuck and roll. Drew was probably the only one who could joke with me like that without being disrespectful. He had only beat me one time at a race when we were kids and he never let me forget it.
"So when are you going to tell her? And when are you going to tell Cece?"
At the mention of her name I froze. I had completely forgotten about Cece. I was so consumed with Jordan that I completely forgot I had an agreement with the most ruthless pack in America. I groaned and stormed into the kitchen, opening the cupboard to grab a glass of water.
"I have no idea what to do with Cece. But Jordan, I can't scare her away. If she has no idea about werewolves or mates, it is going to be overwhelming when she learns about our world. I need her to learn to trust me first and hopefully, she'll fall in love with me."
"Sounds like a good plan, Boss. What can I do to help?"
I took a deep breath and turned to my childhood friend. "I need you to go back to the pack and call the council. Tell them what happened and start putting a plan together on how we will approach this new development with Alpha Callister. I will follow you in two days and I'll end it with Cece."
Drew groaned. "But I have tickets to see Hamilton tonight!"
I laughed and tossed my empty glass at him behind my head. His wolf reflexes caught it with ease but a few drops of water splashed in his face, his punishment for being annoying. "I'll get you tickets in a few weeks and you can bring Sarah with you." With that promise, I walked out the door. I felt my heart rate increasing at the thought of seeing Jordan's face again.
“Oh Sarah will be thrilled! Thanks Alexander,” I heard him yell from the doorway.
I had a plan and it was going to work, it had to work. I was determined to spend the rest of my life with that woman by my side but I knew it wouldn't be easy. I knew she loved her life here in New York and she loved her job. She loved her independence and her lifestyle. How was I supposed to convince her to give all of it up for me? And what if she doesn't know about werewolves and doesn't realize she is one? Has she ever shifted? So many questions I needed answering and soon.
