Chapter 4: Lavender and Fresh Rain

2459 Words
Alexander New York was an exciting place to visit, but I had no idea how anyone lived there. The streets were crowded with people sandwiched next to each other, barely paying attention to one another. It was the opposite of my home. In my pack, there were acres and acres of forest as far as the eyes could see. My wolf could run for hours completely free and wild, the way he was meant to be. He felt suffocated and restless here in the city. Thankfully, we will only be here two nights at most, and then I'm rewarding my wolf with a long run through the forest. Drew and I exited the Waldorf Astoria and jumped into a chauffeured Black Escalade SUV. My Beta admired the buildings around us as we headed to Soho. He enjoyed making comments about the building's rich history and listing all of the food places he wanted to go to before we left. I gave him polite grunts but didn't hear much of what he said as I was answering emails on my phone. I've been to this city many times on business. There wasn’t anything that fascinated me anymore. As soon as we exited the car and I entered the building, my wolf became extremely restless. I could feel him bouncing up and down in my head excitedly and I did my best to ignore him. What's gotten into you? He never got excited about business meetings and found them extremely dull. This was way out of character for him. As we entered the elevator, the scent of lavender and fresh rain assaulted my nose. I had never smelt anything so heavenly and it was intoxicating. I knew that if I found the smell and bottled it up, I would make millions on that perfume. But then again, I would never want to sell it. That scent would belong to me and only I would get to enjoy it. "Do you smell that?" I asked Drew, curious. I followed the scent to the front right corner of the elevator. Whoever the smell belonged to stood right here probably less than 4 hours ago. Drew laughed at me and jumped to the far left side of the elevator. "Hey! Whoever smelt it dealt it." He fake covered his nose and fanned the air around him. I rolled my eyes at him but couldn't hide my smile. He was immature sometimes, but he had a way of making me laugh and keeping things lighthearted. He was a great Beta for me in that way. I needed someone to ease the serious thoughts always running through my head. The elevator doors opened and the addicting smell became even stronger, flooding my senses. Charles, the CEO of ChatFix, greeted us and shook our hands. I had really looked forward to meeting him. A man of his reputation would have provided stimulating conversation but I was too distracted by the smell to focus on what he was saying. I tried to be inconspicuous as possible but I needed to track the scent immediately, it called to me like nothing else ever had. Thankfully, we were being led in the right direction and my wolf howled in satisfaction as we proceeded down the hallway. As we turned the corner, I looked through the glass windows into the conference room and noticed the beautiful woman fiddling with the TV Monitor. Her back was to me but I couldn't help but admire her perky ass and her gorgeous legs stretching for miles beneath the hem of her dress. Her honey-brown hair was up in a twisted bun with a few strands of hair framing the side of her face that I could see. She had a gorgeous body, with breathtaking curves that couldn't be hidden under her clothing. Suddenly realizing I was checking out a woman at the workplace, I quickly looked away. I hoped no one saw that. I was the CEO of a huge investment firm, I couldn't be caught making a mistake like that. I never sexualized the women I worked with and was ashamed in myself. What was wrong with me today? "Are you okay, Alpha?" Drew mind-linked me. I simply nodded at him, embarrassed that he had caught me in a moment of weakness. It had been a few years since I'd been with a woman, that must be the reason I'm slipping. Think with your brain, not your d**k Alexander. Without warning, Charles led us into the conference room and the scent hit me like a stack of bricks. I froze on the spot as the beautiful woman approached me and went to shake my hand. Our eyes met and my entire world stopped turning. Mate! Mate! My wolf howled in my head. This was impossible, my mate was dead. I was sure of it. I would have felt the mate bond when I came of age, I knew she must have died. Yet here she was standing right in front of me. I studied her face in awe. She had the most beautiful and unique eyes. They were almost silver, not like a dull gray but bright like the moon. Her face was soft with a small petite nose and dark lashes over her big eyes. My eyes made their way down to her lips, and wow, they were plump and soft. Whether on purpose or not, she nervously bit the side of her bottom lip and I almost lost my mind. I stifled a growl that was building in my chest. I had never wanted anything as much as I wanted her right there at that very moment. I could tell she felt the connection too, because I could hear her heart rate increase and saw the sudden flush of her cheeks. A low cough quickly broke the spell she had me under and I reached out to shake her hand. The moment our hands met, I felt the bolt of electricity spreading from my fingers into my chest. I was always told the mate bond gave you a strong physical connection, but I never imagined it would feel this incredible. I wanted to grab her and pull her entire body into mine, feeling every inch of her pressed against me. At our touch she quickly pulled away and jumped, surprised by the sensation. Her reaction confused me, it was as if she didn't realize we were mates and was unsure of our connection. She must know what I was to her, if she had been taught of the mate bond from a young age. She was a wolf right? I realized I had been so distracted by her heavenly scent that I didn't notice her werewolf smell. It was there, but extremely faint. I only noticed it when I was next to her. Most werewolf scents can be detected when they're in the same building, especially by an Alpha. Why was she so different? "He's Alexander Tate," Drew said behind me, briefly releasing me from my deep thoughts. He introduced himself and took her hand. I was surprised by the sudden anger that spread through me at the sight of my mate touching the hand of another man. Even though Drew was my friend, I wanted to throw him across the room and wrap my arms protectively around Jordan. "Okay, something is definitely going on with you. You're acting like a psycho." Drew mind-linked me as we all sat down. "You have no idea, Drew. I am a psycho right now." I responded. He had no idea how to respond, so that shut him up quickly. I thought of telling him the good news, but I had to figure it out for myself first. He would start asking a million questions that I didn't know the answer to yet. I needed to talk to her first and make plans for our future together. I couldn't take my eyes off Jordan as she began her presentation. I had no desire to continue with the meeting now that I'd found her, but I didn't want to make a scene in front of her boss. That wouldn't be respectful to her. I spent the majority of the meeting mesmerized by her voice, it was so soft and feminine, yet commanded the entire room. Halfway through her slides she dropped her pen and she bent over to pick it up. It took every fiber of strength I had to control my wolf as the image of plowing into her doggy style flashed vividly in my mind. My nails had dug so deeply into my palm that a couple drops of blood dripped down my hand. Thankfully that would heal in a few seconds before anyone had the opportunity to notice. I had to get it together and fast. I counted to ten and focused on my breathing to prevent myself from jumping up from my chair and carrying her out of the room. Everything about her turned me on and I couldn't believe I was so fortunate to have a mate as sexy and intelligent as the woman standing before me. She really was impressive and although I had just met her, I knew she was destined to become a Luna. She answered every question with ease and competence. I was so surprised to learn that all the marketing campaigns that revolutionized the industry came from her brilliant brain. No wonder Charles wanted her to lead the meeting. My heart beamed with pride as I watched her shine, but the pride quickly faded as I looked around the room and saw the other men admiring her as well. I wanted to yell "MINE!" and rip out the eyes of any man who looked at her. I quickly shut down that thought, this was a business meeting and not an episode of Sunday Night Brawl. What was happening to me? The emotional back and forth was giving me whiplash. I had seen people act crazy after finding their mates and I always judged them, but now I understand why. As soon as she finished her presentation, I saw my window or opportunity and asked her to meet privately in her office. Without waiting for more prodding questions from Drew, I headed straight for her office. I knew which one was hers by her scent that beautifully coated everything in the room. The blinds in her office were all open, which didn't give us much privacy. I quickly closed them and looked around my mate's space. She had a beautifully decorated desk and I noted her organization. You could tell she had great attention to detail and probably had a Pinterest board with trendy inspiration. The office had a great west-facing view and if you looked hard enough, you could catch a small glimpse of the Hudson River. I walked around to her organized desk and started to snoop. I opened her drawers and laughed at the chaos I found. It seemed she had a messy side that she hid behind her put-together appearance. I made a mental note to remember that for later. I smiled to myself, realizing that I was already learning about her and couldn’t wait to uncover more layers. I quickly closed the drawers once I heard the sound of her heels coming closer. She entered the room hesitantly and looked at the blinds, avoiding my gaze. Once she closed the door, I couldn't contain myself anymore. In two strides, I was right in front of her and pressed my body against hers. She took a few steps back but the wall stopped her as I continued to move closer. My hands reached up and gently grabbed her face, memorizing the feel of her soft skin against my fingertips. I buried my face in her neck and breathed deeply, reveling in her intoxicating scent and feeling the sparks ignite throughout my body. "I can't believe I finally found you," I whispered, moving my head back to look directly into her eyes. Her eyes were wide as she stared back at me. "My mate." Jordan gulped audibly and looked into my eyes. At first she looked just as enraptured as I was, but then an emotion I didn’t recognize flashed across her face. She looked away from me and cleared her throat. "Mr. Tate, I apologize if I gave you the wrong impression, b-b-but this is completely inappropriate." she stuttered. Her response floored me and I took a slight step back, my hands still on her arms, unable to take my hands off of her. "What? What do you mean?" I studied her body language and realized she looked extremely uncomfortable. Her heart was beating erratically and she still refused to make eye contact. "I won't sleep with anyone to keep my job or to try and get a promotion. I'm not that kind of girl." Her voice shook as she spoke, the confidence she had earlier slowly wavering. "Jordan," I whispered, using my finger to lift her chin until her eyes met mine. "What are you talking about? Do you not know what you are to me?" To my dismay, Jordan quickly pushed my arm away and ducked to the other side of the room. The distance between our bodies felt wrong. I already felt the absence of her in my arms and wanted to grab her again. But I stopped myself. She held her hands together and rubbed the back of one hand with her thumb. I wonder if it is a soothing mechanism she did unconsciously when she was nervous. I must have been making her uncomfortable. "Please Mr. Tate. You're my new boss and I work for you. That's all I am. I really love this job and I would love to continue working here, but I will not sleep with you. So if you're going to fire me, then please just get it over with." I stared at her incredulously. She had no idea that I was her mate. But she must have felt the bond, it was so powerful and her body reacted to my touch - I know it did! Why was she fighting it and acting like she had no idea who I was to her? I wanted to confess my love for her and announce to everyone that she was my mate, but I realized I couldn’t do that if she know. It could freak her out more than my almost assault in her office. I took another step towards her, trying to ignore how she flinched at my approach. I took another deep sniff and yes, I definitely smelt wolf. Although it was faint, it was unmistakable. "Do you not know what you are?"
