Emma's POV
I read the anonymous warning three times.
Stop asking questions about the Wolfe family.
The paper trembled between my fingers.
Someone had entered my room without permission. Someone knew about my meeting with Alexander and wanted me to stop investigating the stolen records.
I locked my bedroom door and pushed a chair against it.
Then I did something I hadn't done in my previous life.
I listened to my instincts.
I checked the windows, examined the balcony, and searched the room for anything that appeared out of place.
Beneath my dressing table, I discovered a muddy footprint.
Whoever had entered hadn't come through the door.
They had climbed onto the balcony.
I hurried to the window.
The garden stretched beneath me, silent beneath the moonlight. Beyond the hedge, a figure moved quickly between the trees.
I couldn't identify the person, but I caught a glimpse of something metallic reflecting the moon.
A badge.
The intruder wore a warrior's badge.
My stomach twisted.
Had someone inside the pack been assigned to watch me?
I closed the curtains and hurried to my desk. I wrote down everything I remembered about the incident at the gathering, including the mysterious envelope and the torn paper from the corridor.
Then I made a decision.
I would send the information to Alexander.
Not because I wanted his protection alone, but because he deserved to know that someone was targeting his family.
Before I could finish writing the message, a knock sounded at my bedroom door.
“Miss Emma?” my maid called. “There's someone here to see you.”
“Who?”
Mr. Daniel.”
My entire body went rigid.
“Tell him I'm asleep.”
A pause followed.
“He says it's urgent.”
Of course he did.
I slipped the note into my drawer and opened the door just enough to speak to my maid.
“Tell him I cannot see him tonight.”
She nodded and left.
A few minutes later, I heard raised voices downstairs.
Daniel was arguing.
I descended the staircase quietly and stopped behind a pillar.
“You don't understand,” Daniel was saying. “Emma isn't herself lately. She's been asking strange questions and spending time with Alexander.”
My blood ran cold.
He was already trying to turn my family against me.
My father answered from the sitting room.
“She's entitled to speak with Alexander. Their families are discussing an engagement.”
“That's precisely what worries me,” Daniel replied. “Alexander is powerful. He could influence her decisions.”
I closed my eyes.
He was planting seeds of suspicion, just as he always had.
This time, however, I wouldn't let him succeed.
I stepped into the room.
“Daniel.”
Both men turned.
Daniel's expression brightened with false relief.
“Emma! I was worried about you.”
“Then you should have respected my request to be left alone.”
My father's eyebrows rose.
Daniel stared at me.
“I only wanted to make sure you were safe.”
“I'm perfectly safe. You can leave now.”
His smile vanished.
For a moment, I thought he might argue. Instead, he bowed politely to my father and walked toward the entrance.
As he passed me, he leaned close enough for only me to hear.
“You're making enemies you don't understand.”
I met his gaze.
“Perhaps I should be more concerned about the enemies I already know.”
His eyes flashed.
Then he left.
My father waited until the door closed before turning to me.
“Emma, what is happening between you and Daniel?”
I looked at him, realizing I couldn't tell him everything.
Not yet.
“I've started to see things more clearly,” I said.
He studied me with concern.
“Whatever you decide, be careful. Men like Daniel don't appreciate losing control".
I stared at the closed door.
Neither did the people threatening Alexander.
But I was finished being afraid.
That night, I sent a message to Blackthorn Estate, requesting another meeting with Alexander.
I had a warning to deliver.
And this time, I intended to make sure he heard every word.
