CHAPTER FOUR

As I retraced my steps back to the hall , my eyes caught sight of Mr Hassan and other business associates leaving accompanied by my boss as they walked outside.. I guess the meeting had come to an end.. Mr Hassan's profile emanated an air of success and vitality that left me wondering how he was able to make so much money and still look so young… I hurriedly walked outside to stand behind my boss just in case he needed anything and just as I got outside, a fleet of six sleek Mercedes-Benz cars pulled up, each model distinct, and they all entered their respective cars accompanied by guards. They waved to my boss but he stood there not returning their goodbyes…. I watched him from behind as he turned to walk inside after the cars started moving.. He barged into the hall with a very angry look and he stoned it at me, stopping exactly when he was opposite me . I knew something was amiss. “Where were you Shirley” He asked with a high tone “I… I took an excuse to go to the restroom sir”, I said avoiding his angry eyes “During work hours?” Is that what you were taught during your workers training ?” …. He retorted back “I am sorry so sorry”.... I just wanted it all to end after feeling the weight of his disappointment …. He walked out without offering a reply .. “Six o'clock in the morning, don't be late” … He said when he got to his door and he walked inside.. I dropped my shoulders in exhaustion as I moved towards the table where I left my earrings, purse and other essentials. The hall was already empty as everyone had left, and only the cleaners remained to tidy up. I spammed the area twice and I couldn't find my boss's dad, I wondered when he left , I said to myself as I picked up my black purse from the table and made my towards my room to rest As I walked past my boss's room, I spotted something shiny and golden on the floor in front of his room . Curious, I walked closer and realised it was the same half broken locket I had seen in my boss's office earlier, which I had wanted to pick up from the chair before he walked in. I had this overwhelming feeling as I bent to pick it up from the floor. My boss opened his door and almost bumped into me. He quickly noticed the locket on the floor, picked it up before me, and stashed it in his robe's pocket like a thief. His actions intrigued me further, and my curiosity only grew as I looked at him. His cold grey eyes looked so piercing, with his brown mop of hair tousled and wet, falling across his face. Despite his stern expression, there was this certain charm that seemed to captivate me. It caused me to pause and gaze at his intriguing demeanour. He snapped his fingers to draw me back because I stared for long like I had seen an angel…. This drew me back to the atmosphere and I felt so embarrassed at my actions and I quickly apologised and walked out heading straight to my room this time. I got into my room and I bolted the door behind me while I rested back on the door, holding back my heart from popping too much, reflecting on what just happened. I've never had a close view of my boss I guess, I muttered to myself dropping my clothes from my shoulders down to my toes as I made my way into the bathroom. I quickly ran the shower as I sat in the tub to enjoy the temperature of the water … I had to sleep and rest early enough for the next day, I thought as I ran my sponge through my skin running out of the bathroom after five minutes. I dressed in a silk nightie and bounced on my bed… I couldn't help it , I thought about Ashley and Mira and a feeling of despair soaked me as I checked my phone for the time. It was 11:35pm, a few minutes to 12 and the thoughts of my parents flooded my mind. Their memories swept my heart as tears dropped on my pillow soaking it.. The pain of their tragic accident and the burden of caring for my siblings weighed heavily on my heart. However, I refused to let their memory hold me back. I had to keep moving forward no matter how difficult it might seem to be able to be the big sister my sisters need . Feeling determinated , I drifted off to sleep, ready to face whatever challenges the next day might bring. ************* The morning breeze gently swept my face as sunlight streamed through the window, waking me from sleep. With a start, I reached for my phone, realising I had only twenty minutes until 6 o'clock. “Damn it” .. I muttered as I rushed into the bathroom for a quick shower . Oversleeping wasn't an excuse for me, I couldn't afford to be late . “Oh Shirley , how did you oversleep?” I scolded myself as I quickly dressed in a long floral dress with a darling long slit in front as I spread my hair across my shoulders as I arranged it with a scrunchy. I came out to search for my boss as I saw him seated at the breakfast table.. He looked up at me and ignored my greetings, eating his meal like I wasn't there. Standing beside him, I awaited his instructions, unsure if his silence signalled annoyance or mere indifference. The uncertainty gnawed at me as I anxiously anticipated his plans for the day. “Sir ,would we be departing today ?”..I ventured cautiously as I gathered the courage to speak . Shirley, are you questioning my decisions?" he countered, his raised eyebrow halting his meal mid-bite. “No sir, I just wanted to clarify our schedule for today as I needed to remind you about the arrangements”.. I said, my voice getting weak as the conversation ensued. He didn't say a word instead he dropped his utensils and stood up storming out of the room with evident displeasure. I watched as he walked outside and wondered what made him so grumpy this morning. He was a big deal, I sighed and ran outside to look for him
