Wednesday's Child

Finn’s POV             I held one of Mirakel’s hand in mine while Kayla held his other hand as we walked back to her apartment, which was just three floors above the preschool. This was one of the few times that we were walking hand in hand as a family, and like a young pup freshly in love, my heart was pounding so hard in excitement that I was afraid my family could hear it. Our family. My wolf’s soft growl sent a surge of warmth within my entire body and despite the situation, I couldn’t help grinning from ear to ear. “Papa, are you ok?”              I looked down at my little pup and his confused face as he stole glances at me. Kayla turned back and gave me a confused look as well before unlocking the door and letting us into the apartment. Get your s**t together! We’re supposed to be the bad cop! My wolf’s reminder snapped me back to reality and as we sat down together in the living room, each of us still holding onto one of Mirakel’s hands, I did my best to focus. “Mirakel, can you tell us why you fought with the other pup at preschool today?” I tried to ask sternly but as gently as possible, worried that Kayla would reprimand me for being too hard on our pup. To my surprise, she didn’t say anything this time and just looked encouragingly at our pup.              “Jude started it, Papa. He said bad about you. He said Papa Mama together,” Mirakel grumbled and then pointed at Kayla and me before continuing. “Papa and Mama not. Papa has new Mama.. no one wants me. I’m scared,” Mirakel’s voice broke as he blurted out the last few words before bursting into tears. Seeing my pup like this broke my heart and I could feel the same pain through my bond with Kayla, except on her end, guilt overpowered sadness. Instinctively, I pulled both my pup and my mate into my embrace, pressing their heads into my chest as they cried their hearts out.              “Shh, it’s ok buddy, it’s ok,” I said softly as I gently stroked my pup’s back. “I’m sorry, baby,” Kayla whispered and part of me wondered if she was only talking to our pup. “Mama will always love you, and no one or anything in this world can change that,” Kayla said gently as she wiped the tears off Mirakel’s face. “And Papa will always love you. Nothing and no one in this world can ever change that, buddy. You’re my little miracle, remember?” Mirakel’s body shifted and he looked up at me quizzically before asking, “No new Mama?” I chuckled as Kayla turned beetroot at our pup’s innocent question. “Never, buddy, over my dead body! No, not even over my dead body. Papa loves Mama in this world and the next, until the end of time. Just like how Papa loves you.”              My answer had a very different effect on my pup and my mate. Seemingly satisfied with my answer, Mirakel completely stopped crying and a smile broke out his face like the rainbow after a storm, while my mate was turning different shades of red. Her reaction reminded me of the first time that I confessed my feelings to her and seeing her react like this again made my wolf purr in delight like a little kitten.              “Baby, regardless of what the other pup said, you shouldn’t have started a fight. That was wrong. If this happens again, if another pup says something to make you feel bad, you should go to a teacher, ok?” I raised my eyebrows in amusement as Kayla managed to pull herself together to continue our stern conversation with our pup. This was the first time that she was actually reprimanding him and my heart swelled at the progress my mate was making. I knew how hard this was for her, despite knowing that spoiling Mirakel was not the right way to make things up to him, in fact, it’d only destroy him.              “Well, except if another pup hits you, then it’s ok to fight, in fact then you need to fight to defend yourself, got it buddy?” I added, earning myself a frown from Kayla. What? Our pup will be Alpha someday, he can’t just sit back if someone attacks first. Violence is not always the answer, but sometimes it is the only answer. I challenged Kayla with my thoughts and she pressed her lips together before rolling her eyes and I knew then that I had won.  Kayla’s POV             I couldn’t believe what Finn just said to our pup and it reminded me of our younger days when he was always so impulsive and quick to anger. But I knew he was right. Violence doesn’t solve all problems but if someone came along picking a fight, then it’d be wrong to not fight back, Alpha or no Alpha. That was a lesson that I learned the hard way and there was no way that I’d allow my pup to go through what I did when I was a kid. We can’t stop bullies from coming our way, but we sure can stand up to them.              “Ok, Papa, Mama,” Mirakel said solemnly as he nodded. It was absolutely adorable how Mirakel would be so serious sometimes and I wondered if he got that from Finn. I looked up and saw Finn blushing and knew then that I must have forgotten to stop sharing my thoughts with him. I chuckled as I tried to imagine how pup Finn would knit his eyebrows together and speak in an adult tone.              It’s not funny, Kay.             Are you sure? My wolf and I find it quite amusing, Alpha Finn.             Fine, make fun of me, but only because I allow you to, and only you.              I quickly broke off our thought exchange to change the subject. “Are you tired, baby? It’s past your nap time. Do you want Mama to give you a bath and then we can take a nap together?” Mirakel yawned before snuggling further into Finn’s embrace and nodding. I was about to get up and carry him to the bathroom, when Finn shook his head. “I’ll do it. Why don’t you get some rest first? We can discuss the week ahead after Mirakel is in bed.” Finn’s suggestion made me realize how tired I was from the events of today. Goddess knows how my heart was hanging in the air when the preschool called. It wasn’t the first call and I started to worry that it would be the last straw for the preschool. I couldn’t even imagine finding another preschool for Mirakel and just the thought of it sent my anxiety into overdrive. If not for Finn’s assurance while I was driving back, I wasn’t too sure if I would have made it back without a nervous breakdown.             Watching how happily Mirakel wrapped his arms around Finn’s neck as they made their way to the bathroom put a smile on my face. You did the right thing, Kayla. It’s not too late. My wolf’s words made new tears spring to my eyes. Only she knew all of my deepest and darkest thoughts, and even being kept apart from each other for three years didn’t stop her from being there for me, with me. Every minute of the past few years, she was there, dormant and not speaking with me, but she was there. She witnessed every smile, every tear, every word of anger and she understood everything without ever needing a word of explanation from me.              I grabbed a bottle of juice from the fridge before settling down on my favorite chaise lounge sofa. It was nice to finally be able to relax on a weekday, with no work and knowing that my pup was well cared for. But new worries about taking time off work clouded my mind and I began to ponder how I should ask my boss for an entire week off, especially because I was supposed to be working next weekend as well.              “Mama? Mama sleeping?” A curious voice echoed in my head and I blinked a few times before opening my eyes, only to see that it was already dark outside. I turned to the voice and saw my little baby standing beside me, staring curiously at me with those round green eyes of his. “Yes, baby, Mama must have dozed off,” I said groggily before stretching and sitting up. The living room was dimly lit and I could smell the mouth-watering, sweet fragrance of tomatoes mixed with the unmistakable smell of my favourite cheese. I looked towards the open concept kitchen behind the living room and burst out laughing.              Finn was standing in the kitchen and checking on the oven temperature with a red checked apron which was too small for him around his waist. Mirakel turned to see what I was looking at and covered his mouth with both his hands before giggling. “Papa cute,” he exclaimed, and I nodded before picking up my baby and walking to the kitchen. “Sleeping beauties are both awake?” Finn was obviously ignoring our amusement and tried to tease us back. “I am Beast. Mama is Beauty,” Mirakel said in a very serious tone to correct Finn. I exchanged a look with Finn and we both burst out laughing. “Alright, Beauty and Beast, are you ready for some lasagna?”              Mirakel nodded enthusiastically and I carried him to the kitchen sink to wash our hands before dinner. After washing his hands, he insisted on sitting at the table on his own because he was a big boy. I agreed in amusement and went to help Finn with plating dinner. “Thanks, Finn. I’m sorry I fell asleep,” I mumbled apologetically. “It’s my pleasure to cook for my family, Kayla.” Finn’s eyes were filled with so much sincerity and a mix of other emotions that I had to force myself to look away quickly. Luckily, our dinner was ready and I swiftly took two plates of lasagne and headed to the dining table.
