Prologue

Adele and I had just returned from one of our nightly runs when we stumbled upon the horrific scene before us. What was once our pack house was now crumbling to ashes. Heavy and thick black smoke filled the night air. We could hear the cries, the screams, the howls, the snarls, the growls of our people as they were slaughtered like cattle. The women, the children, men, elderly - Everyone. Adele tore away from my grip and instinctively took off towards the battle, as she was a skilled fighter and warrior. My own eyes continued to scan the area, taking in everything. It didn't take me long to make up my own mind and join in on the fight,. I shifted mid-air and landed on four giant paws and charged at the first attacker I saw. The sun was slowly making his handsome appearance just as the moon decided it was time for a much-needed rest. Adele finished her last victim before her large silver-gray wolf turned to look over at me. I was standing in human form covered in blood, dirt, and scars, my eyes locked on my sisters. "We need to leave this area after we have burned the bodies and give our people the proper burial. We will seek refuge where we can. Get the word out to others about what has transpired here last night. After we finish here, we need to go straight to the safe house. We leave tomorrow night." My sister bowed her head in acknowledgment to what I had said, before she shifted back into her human form and moved to gather the dead assassins. It had taken us most of the morning to burn the bodies and the entire afternoon to bury our people. Once we had said our prayers and goodbyes to them, we headed to the safe house that was nested deep within our territory on the southern border. The safe house was a four-bedroom, three-bathroom log cabin with rustic decor throughout the house. Adele, who had quickly started the fireplace, spoke our thoughts. "I feel so lost without our people. Why would those monsters attack us? We did nothing to them. We don't harm humans, we befriend them and protect them." I couldn't speak due to the strong emotions that were running through me, so I headed to one of the rooms and closed the door for some privacy and a long hot shower, before returning to the main room of the house. Tomorrow we would start our journey.
