Chapter 29 David remained in Hollywood over the summer, and we continued to keep things under wraps. He flew me out to LA to stay with him for a week, which we mainly spent at a villa he was renting. He was working crazy hours - he had hoped to have more time with me, but there were some production issues - so I hung out by the pool and read novels and tried to get myself a Hollywood tan. I went into the city to shop but couldn’t work out where to go. Los Angeles didn’t seem to have a town centre. I asked the cab driver to take me to the “shopping centre” and he had no idea what I meant. Eventually he dropped me at a mall, which didn’t seem very upmarket, but was still fascinating because it was all American stores and brands. So many people spoke Spanish there, which I hadn’t expected.
